Pryor named starter for Raiders vs. Jaguars

ALAMEDA – There won’t be a quarterback guessing game in Oakland this week.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen confirmed the expected Monday, declaring Terrelle Pryor the starter for Sunday’s home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Pryor’s strong performance Sunday in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ starting quarterback job grew less stable. The team announced that starter Blaine Gabbert won’t play due to a hand injury suffered in his team’s opener. Instead, Jacksonville will go with Chad Henne, who relieved an injured Gabbert early in a game against the Raiders in Oakland last season.
Pryor passed for 217 yards and rushed for a league-high 112 yards in the Raiders 21-17 loss to the Colts. He was intercepted twice, including on the Raiders final play deep in Colts territory.
“The great ones find a way to get in the end zone in the clutch,” Pryor said Monday. “I missed out on that. I wasn’t so great (Sunday).”
Pryor started only one game his first two NFL seasons. He received the nod against the Colts based on the fact he outperformed Matt Flynn during exhibition games.
He called his performance Sunday “awful.” Allen said that shows Pryor’s passion and dedication. Just the same, there’s plenty of room for improvement.
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he was awful,” Allen said Monday, “but he also understands that there’s some critical mistakes in the game that we got to get corrected because we can’t have those.”

– Running back Darren McFadden managed only 48 yards rushing and averaged 2.8 yards on his 17 carries.
Even so, Allen said he remains convinced that McFadden is on the verge of a breakout season.
“I’m not concerned with who gets the yards,” Allen said. “We were able to run and run effectively. Darren’s going to get his touches. Darren’s going to get his yards.”
Allen said there were some “opportunities” for the Raiders to spring McFadden for long runs. That failed to materialize, for one reason or other.
Last season, McFadden averaged a career-low 3.3 yards rushing. A switch from a zone-blocking scheme to a power-blocking scheme is expected to benefit McFadden.
“I’m still pleased with where Darren is.” Allen said. “I still think he’s going to have a good year.”

– First-year player Marquette King replaced veteran Shane Lechler this season not only as the Raiders punter but as their holder on field-goal and extra-point attempts.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski worked exclusively with Lechler from 2000-12. He said this offseason that he and King concentrated on getting in synch.
On Sunday, Janikowski missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt. King after the game accepted blame.
Not so fast, Allen said.
“The hold was fine,” Allen said. “SeaBass just missed the kick. That’s something he doesn’t do often.”
To that end, Allen said, King and Janikowski will spend more time working together to lessen the likelihood of any issues cropping up.

– The Raiders offensive line allowed only one sack Sunday and held up pretty well, by most accounts, despite two new starters and Khalif Barnes moving from right tackle to left.
“All things considered, a pretty good overall performance for the O-line in the first (game),” center Stefen Wisniewski said.
Allen said the offensive line held up its end.
“For mixing and matching some guys and moving some guys around … I was pleased with the way the offensive line played,” Allen said.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch emerged from the Colts game with a sore shoulder. Allen said none of his other players suffered serious injuries.

– Pryor leads the league in rushing after his 112-yard effort Sunday. Also, Pryor was one of only two players that rushed for 100 yards or more through Sunday’s games.

they answered with ‘woa slow your roll” and “he was playing against back ups”

just like the idiots on this board

dont look now but pryor is making national news as an up and coming dynamic star play making qb!!!!!

Myotic1, you and I both know that the reason TPryor doesn’t have the whole playbook down is the COACHES haven’t developed him like they should have.
Huge mistake by the coaches and GM. Should have started last year. Didn’t. Should have started in OTAs, didn’t.
REALLY should have doubled down in TC but inexplicably they didn’t. They waited until AFTER the 3rd pre-season game. Fools.

However I don’t agree that it is some conspiracy or systemic thing. I just don’t think they are competent enough. Now Pryor will have to play catch up. Thankfully the kid is bright, determined and willing to do ANYTHING to make himself better and to win.
    I LOVE that….

I think physically with his long legs TP’s a little like Randall Cunningham, I just worry about when he runs, those same long legs are like targets for the dirty defenders…just seems different when you see like Russell Wilson or even a Doug Flutie run…low centers of gravity and less likely to get their legs cracked up…

    Rudegruden:

Name on NFL accomplishment that Pryor has…Note: he like Flynn has 2 NFL starts….Pryor lost both of his starts…Flynn won one of his with huge passing numbers of 480 yards passing and 6 TDs Against Detroit
He holds the team Records for most Passing TDs and Yards passing in a single game

Exactly What has Prior Accomplished…he as a QB has the yardage record for a QB RUNNING?? Woopi …and NO WINS…

Can you name a successful Running QB…Koop has strict orders NOT TO RUN….and he is a better runner then Pryor…Of course he is also a very good passer…Unlike Pryor….

Wilson in Seattle Does run only when necessary…Seattle has stopped using the Read Option because they don’t want Russel running…

Luck..was a terrific running QB in College…He Doesn’t anymore why they don’t want him to get hurt…he has a good arm and is a great field general…

RG111…We all know what happened to him and he will no longer be running Unless absolutely Necessary…

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A FRANCHISE QB WHO RAN AND WAS NOT A GOOD PASSER AS WELL……..Of course that is what a QB DOES…HE PASSES THE BALL…

A GOOD QB Is very smart, (football smart) has a quick release, an Accurate passer and it is great if he also has a strong arm but not necessary….He is a Leader…can do his progressions, Stays in the POCKET…Doesn’t hangout his receivers to be cut in half when they are coming across the middle with High Passes to them….can read the defense knows when to audible…knows at all times where his receivers will be ….can read the Rush and take advantage of it by passing into the vacated spot the rusher left.

Does Pryor fit any of these QB requirements…NOT MANY …DEFINATELY NOT ENOUGH OF THEM TO BE A NFL QB

Payton Manning can’t run at ALL…and he is a Great QB…Brady the same…

run first QBs suck. even kapernik has stopped running. RGIII has slowed it down. its passing position. you don’t want your QB running too much.look at Michael Vick, almost never finishes a season.

  • JLofty

BigMike, I think you just need to give TP some time. We have done a TERRIBLE job of developing that kid’s QB skills.
His college coaches didn’t do much either. So it’ll take some time. Fact is, the 2013 Raiders HAVE that time. We’re not going anywhere with Matt Flynn at QB. My guess is TP will be MUCH better by the end of the season and then we will have a clearer picture of what we need to do to be REALLY successful in 2014.

And Matt Flynn would NOT be 2-0 if his starts were with the 12-13 Raiders. Plus he ISN’t 2-0, he LOST to the Pats if I am not mistaken…

I’m really glad that the Raiders got rid of that QB that put up a lot of lofty numbers but then found ways to lose the game at the end with a turnover. The that despite only throwing 14 ints was labeled a turnover machine and a loser.

I’m also thrilled that the Raiders didn’t start the QB that can only complete dink and dunk passes and can’t complete long ones.

Good thing that the current QB doesn’t make horrible decisions to choke away games at the end, throw for multiple ints, or put up 90% of their passing yardage on balls that travel less than 8 yards in the air. As everyone has been so adamant to point out from Palmer and Flynn, those traits are not acceptable in a QB.

Mike, not all players dev same time. I simply think we have done a sucky job developing him.
I think he has room to get better. Just my opinion. We got nothing else so time to see what we have in him.
