Pryor named starter for Raiders vs. Jaguars

ALAMEDA – There won’t be a quarterback guessing game in Oakland this week.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen confirmed the expected Monday, declaring Terrelle Pryor the starter for Sunday’s home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Pryor’s strong performance Sunday in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ starting quarterback job grew less stable. The team announced that starter Blaine Gabbert won’t play due to a hand injury suffered in his team’s opener. Instead, Jacksonville will go with Chad Henne, who relieved an injured Gabbert early in a game against the Raiders in Oakland last season.
Pryor passed for 217 yards and rushed for a league-high 112 yards in the Raiders 21-17 loss to the Colts. He was intercepted twice, including on the Raiders final play deep in Colts territory.
“The great ones find a way to get in the end zone in the clutch,” Pryor said Monday. “I missed out on that. I wasn’t so great (Sunday).”
Pryor started only one game his first two NFL seasons. He received the nod against the Colts based on the fact he outperformed Matt Flynn during exhibition games.
He called his performance Sunday “awful.” Allen said that shows Pryor’s passion and dedication. Just the same, there’s plenty of room for improvement.
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he was awful,” Allen said Monday, “but he also understands that there’s some critical mistakes in the game that we got to get corrected because we can’t have those.”

– Running back Darren McFadden managed only 48 yards rushing and averaged 2.8 yards on his 17 carries.
Even so, Allen said he remains convinced that McFadden is on the verge of a breakout season.
“I’m not concerned with who gets the yards,” Allen said. “We were able to run and run effectively. Darren’s going to get his touches. Darren’s going to get his yards.”
Allen said there were some “opportunities” for the Raiders to spring McFadden for long runs. That failed to materialize, for one reason or other.
Last season, McFadden averaged a career-low 3.3 yards rushing. A switch from a zone-blocking scheme to a power-blocking scheme is expected to benefit McFadden.
“I’m still pleased with where Darren is.” Allen said. “I still think he’s going to have a good year.”

– First-year player Marquette King replaced veteran Shane Lechler this season not only as the Raiders punter but as their holder on field-goal and extra-point attempts.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski worked exclusively with Lechler from 2000-12. He said this offseason that he and King concentrated on getting in synch.
On Sunday, Janikowski missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt. King after the game accepted blame.
Not so fast, Allen said.
“The hold was fine,” Allen said. “SeaBass just missed the kick. That’s something he doesn’t do often.”
To that end, Allen said, King and Janikowski will spend more time working together to lessen the likelihood of any issues cropping up.

– The Raiders offensive line allowed only one sack Sunday and held up pretty well, by most accounts, despite two new starters and Khalif Barnes moving from right tackle to left.
“All things considered, a pretty good overall performance for the O-line in the first (game),” center Stefen Wisniewski said.
Allen said the offensive line held up its end.
“For mixing and matching some guys and moving some guys around … I was pleased with the way the offensive line played,” Allen said.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch emerged from the Colts game with a sore shoulder. Allen said none of his other players suffered serious injuries.

– Pryor leads the league in rushing after his 112-yard effort Sunday. Also, Pryor was one of only two players that rushed for 100 yards or more through Sunday’s games.

“Eventually, teams will force him to win without leaving the pocket. That will be the true test of Pryor’s mettle.”

    >> and THAT is when we’ll all have to admit to Pryors limits. Pryor HAS to move around to be at his best. in the pocket he’s bad right now, if they run a short passing Offense maybe it works IDK. he’s not a good picket passer now, but when he moves around, not runs but moves the pocket he is dangerous

Q: Could Masturd beat Tony Pashos in a 40 yard sprint? He has got to be the slowest tightend in the NFL!

A: It’d be close. In Mastrud’s defense, he cramped up on the 41-yard pass. He wasn’t going to outrun Indy DBs either. Just about any other skill players might’ve. Dude had a 15 yard head start.

  • dirkdiggler

Raiders can win 7-9 games if the defense shows and they find a running back . don’t have any WRS though, and no running game outside of Pryor though.

In his two starts Flynn was more successful in Each of those starts (New England and Detroit) they Pryor will ever be….Flynn consistently has a 70% Completion Rate…But lets take a look at their two starts…

    Flynn..New England His first start…24/37 for 251 yards and 3 TDs…QB rating 100.2

    Flynn… Detroit…31/44 480 yards and 6 TDs…136.4 QB rating…

    ===================================

    PRYOR…SD..13/28 150 yards 2 TDs…

    Pryor…Colts..19/29..217 yards..1.td 2 INT. 70.6 QB rating
    =================================
Open your eyes and your BRAIN and JUST LOOK AT THE NUMBERS….in his 4 years at GB..Flynn Played behind Rodgers one of the top 2 QBs in Football…he got 2 starts that were pretty darn Good the last One was exceptional …When his contract ran out he went to Seattle for good money…Before the 3 Pre Season game his elbow Problem flared up and Wilson got the Start and never looked Back….Flynn then came to us. this year…again he was scheduled to start the opening game and his ELBOW Flared up during the 3rd Critical Preseason Game…

Pryor Stunk the joint up in Seattle with a 9.9 QB Rating)
and Flynn would have started our 1st game but the Damn Elbow thing was not ready to go

Flynn is an exceptional QB…He has been VERY well Trained…and he is now ready to go again…UNFORTUNATELY THE GUY HAS HAD TERRIBLE LUCK

Pryor is OLD man, 3 years in the league now he’s not in HS with bad mechanics, he’s 3rd year vet in the NFL with bad mechanics. we’ll see what happens,, i just wouldn’t expect to see a dramatic improvement, can still win with Pryor either way.

Q: Do you think that the Raiders can get anything for Flynn in a trade to get his 6+ million off of the roster?

A: Would you pay $6 million for him? It’s a tough sell. Maybe after an injury, only by a team with a west coast offense.
    ************************
This isn’t entirely true. Flynn’s salary this year is only 1.25 mil. A team can trade for him and only be on the hook for that, and next years $5M salary won’t be guaranteed unless he is on their roster week 1 of the year. Flynn is very tradable, financially anyways.

  • jumpnjiminy

Be a little patient with Pryor…I don’t like waiting too long especially if he’s not showing improvement. If he’s reached his plateau, it ain’t good enough to get us in the bowl. That’s my only concern is this is it with him…I don’t think so, but….

And Flynn is good enough to be a qb in the nfl..maybe even a starter on some teams…but he’s another one that maybe he’s already shown us what he’s got too…and it ain’t enough.

Start McGloin if Pryor doesn’t win at least two games in the next four.

    Yay! Boo!

Are you saying Pryor is a run first QB? I hope not. That’s not what I saw on Sunday. He dropped back and waited for the play to develop, but the pressure would get to him, nobody was open, so he’d have to run. I rarely saw any plays where it looked like he was planning to run from the snap.

No proof, no evidence, no sale.

Dont bother trying to dodge what i said, dont bother with trying to change the premise of my statement. Address it head on or remain silent. If you have the guts to be honest and dialogue, speak to the specifics.

Actually my comment is a about the way pryor is characterized in the media, specifically by the local radio host.

i pointed out the coded language they use, and raised questions about it.

I used the facts pertaining to the timing of the instillation of the offense, to debunk the theory of a playbook being ‘dumbed down” for pryor.

i pointed out the double standard being applied in pryor case as it pertains to inexperienced qbs learning a new system.

I pointed out the fact that olson is the one that needs a “dumbed down” version of the hybrid offense as he learns it on the fly along with the rest opf the team.

i used a portion of olsons answers to the media to make my point. here I will point out olson also mentioned that he is “still expanding” the play book that he is building with his “toy”.

how can he be ‘expanding” the playbook while simultaneously ‘scaling it back”? That is not possible, it is a lie.

i pointed out how the staff at 95.7 tried to lead marcell reece into disparigiang his own team mate.

i strongly suspect this is done purposely. i strongly suspect that this isnt simply a local phenomenon and is a standard practice for the industry. The evidence points to this conclusion, both from a contemporary and historical sense.

I strongly suspect the root goes back to teddy roosvelt and his devilish code ingrained form the very root of his vision during the creation of the qb position for football.
