DMAC vs. MJD

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, September 13th, 2013 at 6:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders and Jaguars will be looking to get their lead running backs on track Sunday, with Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew both looking for a big day.

McFadden, coming off a season where he averaged 3.3 yards per carry and played sparingly in the preseason, had 48 yards on 17 carries against Indianapolis. Jones-Drew had 45 yards on 15 carries, not exactly what he had in mind after missing much of the 2012 season after an injury in Oakland against the Raiders.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen, who has been fielding questions about McFadden’s production since camp began, wasn’t about to express concern after one game.

“There’s going to be times when we turn around and hand the ball to Darren and give him an opportunity that he knows he’s running the football,” Allen said. “Darren’s going to be fine, guys. Everybody’s got a lot of concern about that, but Darren’s going to be fine.”

McFadden, when speaking to reporters Friday, expressed no concern and thinks Terrelle Pryor’s running ability will only open things up in terms of the running game.

Jones-Drew, who played locally at De La Salle High School, has 146 yards and a 3.6 yards per carry average in West Coast games against the Raiders, Seahawks, Chargers and 49ers.

Asked how he would approach things differently in his home area on a conference call with Bay Area reporters, Jones-Drew said, “I’m not talking to anyone in my family until after the game, how about that?”

McFadden can probably relate to Jones-Drew’s first-game struggles in that the Jaguars have switched to a zone blocking scheme this season. McFadden has struggled mightily in that scheme _ which was de-emphasizes this season for power-gap blocking. Seahawks coach Gus
Bradley acknowledged Jones-Drew is still getting adjusted, but also said the running back had excelled with a zone scheme at UCLA.

Like McFadden last season, Jones-Drew is embracing the scheme change publicly.

“Both schemes are fine,” Jones-Drew said by conference call. “You just have to get comfortable with it. It was a little different for me doing it last week and I have to stay patient. We’ve made corrections and harped on ‘em in practice and I feel confident in our ability to run the ball.”

ENGLANDRAIDER – I think you could say that about the whole team in general. If we can improve at every area of this team as a whole throughout the season, something like 8-8 isn’t so far fetched. Beating the Broncos will be tough though.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

True, but in particular they need to open up some holes for McFadden. They weren’t doing too well with that last week.

They also need to do better on pass defence.
They didn’t look too bad last week but that was mostly because the Indy defense had no clue where Pryor was going to be next.

ENGLANDRAIDER – What do you think of trading McFadden to the Colts (who lost Vick Ballard for the season) for a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

  • 24

    Wow…who knew?

Freeman set most of Tampa Bay’s single-season quarterback marks a year ago. He threw for 4,065 yards with 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Through his first four years in the league, Freeman has more passing yards, touchdowns and fewer interceptions than Joe Montana and John Elway and fewer interceptions than Peyton Manning. His four-year totals are 12,965 yards with 78 touchdowns and 63 interceptions. He added 210 yards with one touchdown and an interception last week.

Sure hope the Raiders are not taking the Jags lightly just because they lost big to KC.

That Amy Trask is a sharp woman. She still bleeds Silver & Black. She can’t stop talking about us. Too bad they all couldn’t work together but I think she was too powerful for those guys and she needed to go. She’s not one to hold back what she thinks.
    ________________________________________

That was an interesting video. It’s a good example of a team official who was heavily influential on the business side of things evidently contrasting with those on the football side of things. I think it shows that Amy was being true to her business sense (if this is a transition year anyway, why pay a player, Flynn, who has very little in the way of a resume when it costs money and draft picks when you already have a guy who can get you through one year, Pryor, and you can see if he’s the answer or not and it won’t cost you anything) and it showed her loyalty to Big Al. I think she figured no way Al goes after a player like Flynn for the reasons stated above.

I really can’t see that Mark fired her but rather that she quit for what she saw as greener pastures. I could be wrong though in that perhaps Mark was tired of the lack of progress with the City of Oakland and didn’t like her counsel on that issue alone.

I would have liked for her and RM to have developed a closer working relationship because I still think she’s a great asset.
