Raiders emphasize getting out of huddle

The Raiders began their final practice Friday in preparation for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and a likely emphasis once the media was excused was being expedient in the huddle.

It was an issue on a few occasions against Indianapolis, particularly after long runs by quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Twice the Raiders had to burn time outs rather than take a delay of game penalty.

“It wasn’t something that was a problem for us during the preseason,’’ offensive coordinator Greg Olson said Thursday. “It was (his) first time for us, live on the road, starting in this system. He executed well in practice, there were a few glitches in the game, so we’re trying to get those cleaned up this week.’’

Pryor conceded getting in and out of the huddle on plays after he ran the ball were a problem. The Raiders had two delay of game penalties and twice had to call time outs Pryor ran the ball.

“It gets tiring. I had 13 runs and I a couple of them were pretty long, and on top of that I’m tying to lose guys and find players downfield to throw the ball,’’ Pryor said. “So you just get winded and I’ve got to keep getting better at that.

“I think I’m just so psyched up in in the game and in the moment, and I’m huffing and puffing and trying to get the way out. I’ve got to get better at that, and we will be better at that this week. I can promise that.’’

– Tight end David Ausberry was working with an athletic trainer on a separate field as practice began and likely will be declared out of the Jacksonville game.

Tackle Menelik Watson, who reportedly underwent arthroscopic knee surgery (the Raiders will not confirm) will also be out.

Strong safety Tyvon Branch and place kicker Sebastian Janikowski were both at practice.

– Media at practice included a television station from Ohio out to cover the Ohio State-Cal game. Pryor, who left Ohio State after being suspended in a memorabilia for cash scandal, is three years into a five-year ban where he cannot have contact with the program.

if sims stuffs that middle, the run and give a great push up the middle on passing downs, forces jags out of their gameplan, helps get other guys sacks and int’s, but only has 3 tkls..he should get best defensive player..

Best is an arbitrary and by nature subjective term.

Who was last’s weeks “best defender” by the way?

Have a new thought on the infield… Just tear up all the grass and make the whole thing dirt… Old school. And while they’re at it, maybe we should go old school throwback with leather helmets and no face guards.

    FIRE THE INFIELD NOW!

  • Marks hair

and the Henne Jokers had it right.. henne will go 3 and out a bunch because he’s just not very good.. and TP will continue to dominate the time of possession. I don’t think any one defensive player will have a ton of impact..

107.. who was the best player last week? Great question..

if we can come to a universal answer for that question maybe this new list won’t seem so goofy to me..

Non of this sissfication of pro sports for me.
Fk, fill the infield with lavarocks and we’ll see who is man enough to play on it.

I am trying to rack my booze-addled brain for who I would pick as “best defender” last week.

The trouble is with Carver/Allen’s current defense there ISN’T supposed to be a “best” player.

These guys are playing team D and it’s a beautiful thing. If someone had force the critical turnover last week that imo would have sealed that game I’da picked him. Sadly that din’t happen…

  • raidersince87

hayden and sio are going to be great picks imo..now if we can get clowney on the other side of houston..and if TP developes into what i think he can be..no more picks wasted on qb’s!! finally!

    ==========

Right?………I mean, Sio looked like he was ready. He seemed to improve with every preseason game. He came off the edge more than I expected, much like I thought Burris would be last year. He was just a bad angle, or hand placement away from getting quite a few sacks. Had a nice tackle for loss on stretch play going the opposite way. Ran down the RB from behind and dropped him.

  • raidersince87

last game was tough to call on who was best defensive player..you know who played descent last week i noticed..Jenkins..

  • raidersince87

i noticed the way sio played too in pre-season..we mighta got a james harrison type player with him.

  • RaiderRockstar

Who was last’s weeks “best defender” by the way?

    ***

the list just started this week, so nobody voted on it.

Tracy Porter, DJ Hayden & Kevin Burnett didn’t fair so well (in my book) even though the coverage by Hayden & Porter was tight, they gave up completions. Porter was much better in the 2nd half

Burnett missed his assignment on Colts TE Allen, which resulted in a TD. Also missed a tackle on Luck that would have been a sack, but Luck instead ran for a 1st down.

plenty of defensive players deserve props for their play in Week 1: Houston, Hunter, Branch, Roach & Jenkins in particular

I didn’t notice any glaring mistakes by Maiava, but he runs like his feet are stuck in quicksand. Still not 100% ?? Sio Moore only played like 8 snaps

Sims & Walker pressured Luck, but neither got any solo tackles behind the LOS. 4 combined “assists” on gang tackles, which is cool by me. Ballard ran up the gut for like 5 ypc , which concerns me a bit

my vote for Week 1′s “best” goes to Houston for wreaking havoc nearly every play. What say you?

Tyvon Branch was certainly in the running, but ran into that Colts WR 40 yards downfield in what should have been called pass interference. Also had the 15 yard defenseless WR hit on DHB

  • RaiderRetribution

Robinson activated, he will have 2 sacks and a stuff.

Walker needs to step up inside at DT, negate Mjd

  • JLofty

Yeah 87 I was thinking Jenkins too. Him or Pat Sims. Tough to call with this D imo.
Which is how it SHOULD be too!

Read a huge write up on Clowney yesterday…….. Talking about how he’s got some Diva in him. He doesn’t practice too hard, goes by a different set of rules than the rest of the team. His conditioning is a factor because he’s got this “Whatchyou gonna do? Bench me?” (With that GTFOH hand wave off)

But damn……He comes up big when he needs to, and when it matters the most.

I’m just not interested in getting any slackers in here…Even IF their play is sometimes Stellar.

IF (and I’m saying if) Clowney is deliberately slacking because he’s sure he’ll be the #1 pick next April, he’s either an idiot or he’s getting some very, very bad advice. If he’s slacking now, how bad it will be once he gets his big payday?

Raiders are in NO position to draft Clowney or Bridgewater. Need to get your sights set on a later single digit or early teen pick.

Last year we had a Qb that would move the chains with his arm but the defense and special teams were so horrible that we sucked as a whole and lost games sometimes by Palmer’s last minute INT.

This year we have a Qb that can move the chains with his feet the defense is a little better the special teams still sucks and we still lose games by an INT.

This year our fans will tolerate the losses because they like our Black Qb as opposed to last year when they hated our White Qb.

Sorry to be so blunt but this is the reality….Pryor is just like Tebow he has a low ceiling will most likely not be an NFL Qb and we will be drafting a Qb in April again.

But hey its so EXCITING losing with Pryor at Qb that you tards are happy…even losing!
