Final: Raiders 19, Jaguars 9

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 15th, 2013 at 4:28 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders scored a touchdown on their opening possession for the first time in more than a year and Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals in a 19-9 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in their home opener at O.co Coliseum.

Oakland, 1-1, rushed for 226 yards, with running back Darren McFadden leading the way with 129 yards on 19 carries. Janikowski’s field goals came from distances of 46, 30, 29 and 29 yards.

On defense, the Raiders had no trouble with the quick-tempo, no-huddle offense of the Jaguars, bottling up their attempts to run and displaying crisp tackling skills on the short throws of quarterback Chad Henne.

The Jaguars had a 27-yard field goal by Josh Scobee in the first half and scored with 2:53 to play on an 13-yard pass from Henne to tight end Clay Harbor when trailing by 16 points.

The drive came following a lost McFadden fumble following a 28-yard gain to the 48-yard line.

In a game that was billed nationally as the battle for the first pick in the NFL draft, given the recent fortunes of the two franchises, Jacksonville looked a lot closer to being in position to select either South Carolina defensive end Jadaveon Clowney or Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater than the Raiders.

The Raiders were far from smooth in the passing game, with Terrelle Pryor completing 15 of 24 passes for 126 yards without a touchdown or an interception. Pryor rushed for 50 yards on nine carries.

After the Raiders deferred to Jacksonville after winning the coin toss, their defense set the tone by forcing a three-and-out on the first series.

Phillip Adams than raced around the right side for a 30-yard punt return to the Jacksonville 38.

The Raiders took advantage of a 15-yard Jacksonville penalty, got a 7-yard run by McFadden to the 16 and a 5-yard run by Terrelle Pryor to the 7 before Reece scored from from the 11.

It was the first touchdown on a first possession since the regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers in 2011.

Thin but Pryor got the Raiders in position for five field goal attempts, including one missed by Janikowski from 42 yards out.

The Raiders may have suffered a significant injury in the first half, as strong safety Tyvon Branch left the game with a leg injury, had to be helped off the field, and did not return.

The Raiders bottled up former De La Salle High star Maurice Jones-Drew, who had 27 yards on 10 carries before leaving with an injury.

    What a statement game.

Oak R8rs – Good point! Let’s bask in our 24 hours of non #1 draft pick status. We’re tied for 2nd in the division in the AFC West.

Our offensive line is coming together.
    Pryor didn’t throw any interceptions
    The Running game is here.
The Defense is stout against the run and can get to the passer. We’re due for some takeaways.
    We made 4-5 field goals. That’s 80%
We didn’t lead the game in penalties.

    It’s coming together.

Losing Nix might be good for the overall good of the team. Gurode is much better. DA seems reluctant to bench his guys (as in Flynn and Mustard). It seems injuries are the only thing getting the absolute best guys in the game.

    @@@@@@@

How is Mastrud “DAs guy?” Your an idiot. And it’s never good to have an injury. Obviously you’ve never played football. Don’t watch much either, it seems.

1 combined loss in the AFC West. Tougher div. than any NFC or AFC div. We really need to get better if we’re gonna win it.

Maybe because he was trying to play hurt? And Pryor had all day several times today, w nix and without. I’m not saying he had a great game. I know he made a mistake or two. But one game doesn’t instantly make you shlt. It’s a long season.

  • boss01

Only way to beat Denver is to rush for over 200 yards, ball control, and bring some heat and put horse neck on his back 10+ times, +2 turnover battle, tall order, but possible nonetheless

So was Jacksonville. Teams gameplan, you know. Which is one reason you saw Pryor contained better today than he was last week.

I do agree with you about Rivera. What little we’ve seen of him, he looked good against both the Colts and Jax. I’m sure as he gets up to speed a bit we’ll see him more. Looks like a real find.

Bucs 14-13 lead vs Saints. Need wins by Bucs and Jets to help the draft.

And yes, I can go ahead and look forward to our real playoff shot season.

To even think of passing the Chargers or Chiefs, we need either Bridgewater, Brett Hundley, Clowney, Lee, or Anthony Barr.

Would the Packers trade their #1 next draft and James Jones (their 3rd WR) to the Raiders for our #1 if they could draft LT Jake Matthews?

He’s there for blocking. We have no other TEs that can do that in any reliable fashion. He caught one pass in his last 3 years. We didn’t bring him here to make plays. Whatever offensive productivity we get from him is gravy. He’s already more than tripled his previous 3 years offensive production in 2 games.

I’m not gonna die on the cross for Mastrud. And there’s nothing wrong w rooting for Rivera and Kasa. But not knowing why Mastrud is in there is uneducated. And bashing him for lack of offensive production is short sighted to say the least.

  • Tumbleweed

DA had Pryor go easy cuz he doesn’t want him running and getting hurt. Pryor easily could have racked up 150.

The week leading up to the Denver game is a critical test for the veteran leaders on the team. Guys like CWood, Houston, Roach, even Khalif Barnes, have to keep the young guys tracking.

McKenzie and Allen have both alluded to having players on the team that “run things” and how important those kinds of players are to team chemistry and to the coaching staff. Our vets will need to step up this week and lead.
