Woodson doing a number on Father Time

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, September 15th, 2013 at 6:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

OAKLAND – There’s a belief by some that Raiders owner Mark Davis signed safety Charles Woodson just to sell more tickets to home games and jerseys with Woodson’s name on them.
That’s true, in part. Yet, it’s also a fact that Woodson isn’t your ordinary 36-year old, and he brings more to the equation than selling power.
“The scary thing about it is, I watch him on film and in practice every day and the guy’s still got it,” Raiders veteran offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said a short time after the Raiders beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 19-9 at the Coliseum in Woodson’s first regular-season home game since he signed with the Raiders in the offseason..
“It’s not like he’s old and can’t move. The dude can still play. It’s crazy actually. He’s a machine. I don’t know how he does it after 17 years.”
Plenty of thirtysomethings still can play, but how many of them can fly through the air, literally, with the greatest of ease and make perhaps the play of the day?
Woodson showed doubters about his ability to play at a high level just how much he has left Sunday, when he left his feet and launched himself shoulder height toward Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew in the second quarter.
Woodson scored a direct hit, just as Jones-Drew pointed himself toward the Raiders goal line, and dragged down Jones-Drew at the 3-yard line. The Jaguars settled for a field goal two plays later.
“It don’t matter, man,” Woodson said of his heroics. “I’m just flying over a building in a single bound.”
Raiders coach Dennis Allen called the play “huge” and said it helped the Raiders shift momentum.
“Any time you see a guy like Charles Woodson who has played as long as he has and the way he can play at the level that he’s played,” Allen said, “for him to make an effort play like that really gives the whole team and the defense in particular a lot of momentum. It was a great play.”
Woodson’s also making a huge impression on his teammates, especially the younger ones.
Rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden didn’t see Woodson’s high-flying acrobatics. Just the same, he said, he draws inspiration from a player the Raiders selected in the first round of the 1998 NFL draft.
“It’s motivation,” Hayden said of Woodson’s play. “If he can do it, anyone of us can do it. … Hopefully a little bit of him rubs off on me.”
Through two games so far, the Raiders defense allowed only 30 points, or slightly more than what the Raiders allowed per game last season, when Woodson was wrapping up his Green Bay Packers career.
Call it the Woodson Effect? Call it whatever you want, Woodson said, but there’s a feeling that the Raiders are on to something meaningful defensively.
“We’re onto playing good, hard football,” Woodson said, “and that’s all we can really ask of everybody. (Sunday), for the most part, we did our job as a team collectively. We beat a team I felt like we were supposed to beat and that’s a step in the right direction.”
Of course, Barnes would say in a lighter moment, Woodson might need a cane to take that step.
“He could play another two or three years if he wants to,” Barnes said. “He’s the true definition of a guy that does it because he loves to, because he really doesn’t have to. It’s plays like that, man, there’s not a lot of guys in this room that would put their body through that.”

All right, got a 9 in the box and a 1-2 comment from GDog in one sentence, lol:

I see 6 wins ONLY if we get above average QB play. I can easily see 1 or 2 wins if whoever our starter is struggles.

McF is dead in the water unless we have a QB that can beat the 9-in-the-box.

That 2nd D-Moore drop was bad, but there was a penalty on the play and would have been called back if he did catch it.

Any word on Streater leaving the game? Guess he is fine.

Streater came back into the game and made another catch.

I think Pryor is 1 for 9 with 2 INT’s on passes 15+ yards down the field now this year.

Beating up on Jax was fun, but we have a serious dink and dunk issue with our passing game.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

According to his stats on NFL.com, he has 2 passes over 20 and 1 over 40.

Just messing with you GDog, just suprised to see YOU OF ALL PEOPLE in here trying to serve crow today, when you were like the biggest negative nancy all preseason.

  • r8ter4evr

lets look at the positives as true Raider fans we have 9 new starters on defense who are hungry for contract extensions give Reggie credit for signing multiple 1 year contracts Pryor should have been given more 1st team reps they knew about Flynns arm before they signed him give TP some love this team is feeding of of him!

  • http://repealitnow.org MistaBrown

I just dont see our offense keeping up with Gooseneck next Monday. The Def will have to play lights out and even score to give us a chance.

DO NOT COUNT ON SEAPERCH FOR A G0D DAM THING!

  • Marks hair

we will have a good running game as long as TP is the quarterback.. play good D and we’re at least competitive..

  • RaiderRetribution

Lefty, with all the dead money and the UFA’s, and especially the new CBA where players are UFA’s after their 4th season; the Raiders are in a unique situation I think we will see more trades at the trade deadline between contenders and rebuilders.

  • alex7

sigh. Some of you think we can trade DMac for a HIGH pick??

Based on one half season of health and productivity, negated by 4 seasons of injury?

    Seriously?

DMac will play out his contract and sign here for cheap, or walk and be part of the compensation pick formula.

  • Just Fire Baby

    O,

This was after last weeks game, and I counted 0 for 2 today. Talking about passes traveling 20+ yards in the air from LOS.

    Josh Dubow‏@JoshDubowAP9 Sep
Also from @PFF: Pryor 1-7 41 yds and 2 INTs on pases 20+ yds in air; 18-22 176 and TD on shorter balls #Raiders

  • Just Fire Baby

Rarely anybody gets traded in the NFL midseason.

I remember Brandon Lloyd have like 1,000 yards receiving already and getting a 6th round pick.

  • Just Fire Baby

I think the one completion was the Mustard one in Indy.

Nite fans of Raider football. U 2 pool turds… Lol at u

Only Seattle and Kansas City have allowed fewer points scored after two games than the Raiders.

If i’d been on the golf course or out fishing today, missed the game, and came here to find out what happened I’d get the impression we lost. For people that claim to be Raider fans you sure like to talk about nothing but the negatives from the game.SMFH

Also,it must be so painful to some that the Raiders won while their beloved whiners got their arses handed to them so they will be here all week pointing out any negative about the Raiders they can find.

  • alex7

Pryor is 1 for 9 with 2 INTs on passes that traveled more than 15 yards in the air.

Raider O is looking at stats that just show the length of his passes after YAC.

Pryor struggles reading the D, so the coaches have stopped calling for deep passes after the 2 picks last week and his misfires to DMac and Reece.

    Next week…that won’t help.

  • Marks hair

I don’t think we should expect too much out of the passing game.. the wide receivers are just as raw and inconsistent as TP..

  • Just Fire Baby

Obvious to see what we are trying to build here.

Defensive minded GM, hires defensive minded coach, and now have a defensive minded team.

Need a lot more talent to make it work on the grand level, but momentum is building on that side of the football.

I guess the Herd can shove his “Kapernick is the hardest QB to gameplan for, so he is the best QB in the NFL” up his you-know-what for a few weeks.

I thought you said I said we could easily go 0-16, and was talking about ten in the box?

What did I say that was unreasonable?

6 wins with above average QBing… and we have to get McF going. I will stand by that comment.

If our QB (who wasn’t determined at that time) couldn’t check out of 9 in the box (which is actually pretty unheard of in the NFL) why do you think we would win any games at all??

I know you don’t like me, but at least find something unreasonable that I said to attack me.

Bring the blitz at Peyton from all angles lets be unpredictable and see what happens I believe its our only chance in addition to running the clock with methodical ball control get donkeys out of rythym like hawks did to winers

a few winless teams facing each other though

Need to get to manning w our front four. Maybe we can bring one guy heter and there, but he better have a clear shot. Manning chews up blitzes. He will find almost any open receiver.

    Seattle 2-0

    Philadelphia 1-1
Washington 0-2 (although they have been keeping RGIII in the pocket due to injury concerns this season)

    2014 Free Agency

    - Sign Veldheer and Houston long-term. If only one is signed, Franchise tag the other.
    - Sign Porter and Roach to 4-year deals.
    - Gurode, Woodson get 1-year deals.
    - Draft Bridgewater, Clowney, or trade down for Marqise Lee, Anthony Barr, or a James Jones/1st round package (GB).
    - Win 8-9 games in 2014.

(If Cutler is somehow available, he’s priority #1)

  • Just Fire Baby

The last thing you want to do is blitz Peyton.

He will just check out of his calls all game long and hit open men while your unblocked blitzer can’t even get into the backfield in time.

This Donkeys team will be like the Greatest Show on Turf teams.

You just have to keep them in front of you, tackle well, try to strip the ball, and hold them to 24 points.

isn’t it fun watching our D swarm to the ball? Impossible to do that when you play only man-to-man and guys have their back to the play too often.

We will need to blitz against Denver, we will also need to bring QB pressure w/o having to blitz in order to defeat them.
