Woodson doing a number on Father Time

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, September 15th, 2013 at 6:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

OAKLAND – There’s a belief by some that Raiders owner Mark Davis signed safety Charles Woodson just to sell more tickets to home games and jerseys with Woodson’s name on them.
That’s true, in part. Yet, it’s also a fact that Woodson isn’t your ordinary 36-year old, and he brings more to the equation than selling power.
“The scary thing about it is, I watch him on film and in practice every day and the guy’s still got it,” Raiders veteran offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said a short time after the Raiders beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 19-9 at the Coliseum in Woodson’s first regular-season home game since he signed with the Raiders in the offseason..
“It’s not like he’s old and can’t move. The dude can still play. It’s crazy actually. He’s a machine. I don’t know how he does it after 17 years.”
Plenty of thirtysomethings still can play, but how many of them can fly through the air, literally, with the greatest of ease and make perhaps the play of the day?
Woodson showed doubters about his ability to play at a high level just how much he has left Sunday, when he left his feet and launched himself shoulder height toward Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew in the second quarter.
Woodson scored a direct hit, just as Jones-Drew pointed himself toward the Raiders goal line, and dragged down Jones-Drew at the 3-yard line. The Jaguars settled for a field goal two plays later.
“It don’t matter, man,” Woodson said of his heroics. “I’m just flying over a building in a single bound.”
Raiders coach Dennis Allen called the play “huge” and said it helped the Raiders shift momentum.
“Any time you see a guy like Charles Woodson who has played as long as he has and the way he can play at the level that he’s played,” Allen said, “for him to make an effort play like that really gives the whole team and the defense in particular a lot of momentum. It was a great play.”
Woodson’s also making a huge impression on his teammates, especially the younger ones.
Rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden didn’t see Woodson’s high-flying acrobatics. Just the same, he said, he draws inspiration from a player the Raiders selected in the first round of the 1998 NFL draft.
“It’s motivation,” Hayden said of Woodson’s play. “If he can do it, anyone of us can do it. … Hopefully a little bit of him rubs off on me.”
Through two games so far, the Raiders defense allowed only 30 points, or slightly more than what the Raiders allowed per game last season, when Woodson was wrapping up his Green Bay Packers career.
Call it the Woodson Effect? Call it whatever you want, Woodson said, but there’s a feeling that the Raiders are on to something meaningful defensively.
“We’re onto playing good, hard football,” Woodson said, “and that’s all we can really ask of everybody. (Sunday), for the most part, we did our job as a team collectively. We beat a team I felt like we were supposed to beat and that’s a step in the right direction.”
Of course, Barnes would say in a lighter moment, Woodson might need a cane to take that step.
“He could play another two or three years if he wants to,” Barnes said. “He’s the true definition of a guy that does it because he loves to, because he really doesn’t have to. It’s plays like that, man, there’s not a lot of guys in this room that would put their body through that.”

    2014 Free Agency

    - Sign Veldheer and Houston long-term. If only one is signed, Franchise tag the other.
    - Sign Porter and Roach to 4-year deals.
    - Gurode, Woodson get 1-year deals.
    - Draft Bridgewater, Clowney, or trade down for Marqise Lee, Anthony Barr, or a James Jones/1st round package (GB).
    - Win 8-9 games in 2014.

(If Cutler is somehow available, he’s priority #1)

    @@@@@@@@@

Awesome. You can take Roach off your list. He has a 4 year deal.

  • Marks hair

da learned… he played it conservative and won with our strengths.. if he did that at the end last week we would be 2-0.

This defense is the ‘Raider 300′. Like Spartans. They all fight like one cohesive unit where they are only as strong as their weakest soldier.

the main purpose of a successful running game is to open up the play-action pass and other deep throws…to score points.

I don’t want a lame Vikings-Peterson offense or Titans-CJ offense that can run but can’t score outside of them.

Give me the Eagles run-run-deep strike offense coupled with our D.

Obvious to see what we are trying to build here.

Defensive minded GM, hires defensive minded coach, and now have a defensive minded team.

Need a lot more talent to make it work on the grand level, but momentum is building on that side of the football.

You still want to tell me how DMo is our best offensive player?

At what point are you ready to give up on this kid?

Granted, I think that he’s trying. It’s gotta be killing him inside. And I almost feel bad for the kid. Cause that is what he is, a kid still. But damn. He’s killing us.

The expectations put on this kid are killing him. He needs to be sat down to reflect for a bit. This isnt fun for him right now. It’s only going to get worse until he starts enjoying playing again.

Before we all get too excited, Joke-sonville is BY FAR, the worst team in the league. And as I said, Indy is going to take a giant step back as well. But you have to be encouraged. Hunter, Bilukidi, and Houston played well, and when they didn’t Allen and Tarver schemed well.

No coincidence that it lead to our TD drive of the game.

    Punt returners are game-changers.

That was nice. But we have a new STs coach and we still have punt returners not fair catching the ball at the 20? What the hell was he expecting?? The ball taking a twenty five yard bounce??

Peyton Manning had a 149.3 rating and 3 TDs vs the Ravens blitz last week.

It’s the first thing that shows up on Google when you search “Peyton Manning vs the blitz.”

Now, I will say we MIGHT have the best secondary Manning has faced this year.

  • http://repealitnow.org MistaBrown

Don’t give a Fk about those teams. The Oakland Raiders need to blitz Manning. He is not mobile and we need to hurt him. Make him stay down. If he does get up he should be weary and looking out his ear hole.

I don’t think Wilson is our future, but he just might be; I do think we need to sign him to our 53 man-roster though as there are teams that know, Ponder, Weeden, Locher, Gabbert are not; and teams such as Chicago, Arizona that know whom they have may not be there next season or beyond due to free agency.

Adams is fine. Adams made a couple of very good plays and some bad plays. But Phil Adams is a corner, and a good one. He is learning the punt return game on the fly. If he didn’t have a very good intial return, Pryor would not have gotten a TD today.

    re: Amy Trask

Trask’s job the last few years has been to bargain with the city of Oakland, get something going with corporate sponsorships for a new stadium, things of that nature.

That either she decided to quit or that Mark D. let her know her services were no longer needed has to be about that more than anything else. If she decided to quit it’s because she saw nothing on the horizon in the way of a new stadium that made her feel the situation was any different than it has been in the past, which means unpromising. If Mark gave her some indication he wouldn’t mind her leaving, it’s because he felt she wasn’t the one to get the new deal.

Who, then, is the go-to person in the Raider org for a new stadium deal?

    ———-

    JFB is right.

Everything must be disguised against Peyton. 4 or 5 man rushes that come from every direction.

Drop back into zone/man combo’s. That is the Patriot’s blue print for getting to Peyton.

But that only works for about 2 quarters of play. 3 tops. Eventually he figures EVERYONE out.

The other half of the equation to beating Manning is that for those 2 quarters that you have him confused, you have to put up points and preferably create turnovers. Get a lead because eventually he is coming and once he gets you figured out, you just have to hope you’ve got enough of a lead to out last him.

  • Just Fire Baby

Peyton Manning has played for like 15 years and has never been knocked out of a game before.

To think that is some type of gameplan is nonsense, and the talk of 15 year old Madden players.

On paper…according to the “experts”, this defense was a hodgepodge of talentless castoffs and nothing more.

I heard a guy on the radio two days ago Paul Chartjien(sp.) say our defense was almost entirely comprised of players no other team wanted and therefore we would be lambasted by almost everyone we played. He was also the one I heard say there was a “strong possibility” we would go 0-16.

Apparently he missed the Colt game.

It’s only two games but u would think there would have to be some eyebrows raised already as to this defense.
