Woodson, Young, Ross to pick up safety slack

Unedited version for print . . .

The Raiders were resigned to moving forward without strong safety Tyvon Branch Monday, with Charles Woodson, Usama Young and Brandian Ross charged with picking up the slack after the loss of their highest-paid player.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen declined to confirm an ESPN report that Branch had a fractured fibula, saying, “ he’s probably going to miss some time, how much that time is, I don’t know.’’

Allen termed the injury “significant’’ following a 19-9 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday, the same term he used when Jared Veldheer had surgery to repair a torn triceps.

“We’re going to be missing a good player,’’ Woodson said. “It’s unfortunate it goes down like this and it just means somebody is going to have to step up.’’

Having already used the short-term injured reserve designation in Jared Veldheer following surgery to repair a torn triceps, Branch will be carried on the 53-man roster until he’s healthy unless the team determines he needs to be placed on injured reserve for the season.

Branch, who signed a four-year $26.5 million extension last year and is earning $9.5 million this season in a restructured deal, has been a favorite of three different coaching staffs because of his work ethic as well as an explosive, physical style.

The Raiders did fine for three quarters without Branch against Jacksonville, with Young getting 1.5 sacks and Ross getting a sack.

While Ross is listed as the backup strong safety to Branch and Young the No. 2 free safety behind Woodson, Allen said he wasn’t sure which player would start in the place of Branch and isn’t really sure if it matters.

“If Ty’s out for awhile ew’ve got guys we feel can step up and make plays, whether it’s strong safety or free safety,’’ Allen said. “I look at those as interchangeable positions and they really need to be to have the flexibility to do different things defensively.’’

Young, having played in New Orleans when Allen was coaching defensive backs, is used to moving around.

“I’ve played free, I’ve played strong, I’ve played nickel, I’ve played corner,’’ Young said. “Here as a safety, you’re a safety. We mix it up so much, with guys in the box or back in space, you never know where you’re going to be.’’

Allen and Woodson said the Raiders believe they won’t have to alter their game plan to account for the absence of Branch when they visit the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 3.

“I believe we have smart players and guys that can go in and know what’s expected of them, what to do,’’ Woodson said. “We won’t have to alter our game plan at all. We look forward to going down there with our full arsenal of plays and just have to stick different guys in there to implement it, and we’re comfortable with that.’’

– Woodson has gotten plenty of feedback from his leaping tackle of Maurice Jones-Drew which prevented a potential Jacksonville touchdown. He saw it on film and liked what he saw.

“It’s pretty impressive,’’ Woodson said. “It was one of those sellout plays that you need during the course of a game that hopefully can turn the tide and give you some momentum.’’

– Guard Lucas Nix is getting an MRI on his injured ankle and his status for Denver is not known. Andre Gurode played in place of Nix, who was struggling in part because of the injury.

“He did well,’’ Allen said of Gurode. “A couple of things need to be cleaned up but overall I was pleased with what he did when he got in there.’’

– Allen said place kicker Sebastian Janikowski, whose miss from 35 yards snapped a streak of 50 straight field goals from 40 yards and in, is still working on gaining confidence with Marquette King as the holder. Shane Lechler was Janikowski’s holder from 2000 through 2012.

We actually have the db’s to make it tough on the broncos D. Not saying we will shut them down, but if we can get some kinda rush, we can definitely make it interesting

Any word on Tyvon? If he broke his fibula doesn’t that mean he is going to IR?

Dennis Allen is going to be laughing like a hyena with John Fox after the Raiders blowout win @ Dungver

then RM99 will be forced to remove the “Tits” nickname and pay the man some respect

First of all, I don’t consider calling TA ‘Tits’ disrespectful.

I think the nickname is appropriate and funny as hell.

Props to Mark’s Hair for coming up with it.

The fact that the Tits nickname drives some uptight humorless people out of their minds, only inspires me to use it more.

Secondly, since you’re so confident of Tits laughing like a hyena after the RAIDS blow out the Mules and that that would ‘force’ me to stop calling him Tits – why don’t we make a wager along those lines ?

If the RAIDS lose to the Mules this weekend, you’ll be forced to call TA ‘TITS’ until they win another game.

If the RAIDS beat the Mules, I’ll quit calling TA ‘TITS’ until they lose another game.

Since you’re predicting a RAIDER blow out win and that Tits is going to be COY, you should have no problem accepting this wager.

I know you have mentioned that Burnett batted down a Luck pass in Week 1, but the plays in that game that really stick out in my mind are negative ones – blown assignment covering the TE Allen, that ended up being a TD. Missed tackle/sack on Luck, where he ran for a first down.

    @@@@@@@@

I’ve let the missed sack go. It happens all the time. Happened to Houston (sort of) last week. Luck is huge, he can shake off a high tackle. And you can’t tackle a QB low. So it happens more often now than you think. We’ve seen it twice already against us in just two weeks. It’s not just Big Ben any more. Over a dozen QBs can shake a shoulder high tackle.

I think you have to judge the overall performance of any player and it seems to me that Burnett has been playing pretty darn good. The guy has been tackling well, covering well and for the most part has been in the right place. Every player in the league gets beat from time to time. It’s not the first time Luck has shaken of tackles. The guy is strong.

The bigger and more important issue before us is the int’s by Pryor in critical situations. We may have won that game if Pryor didn’t make those red zone mistakes. Every defense in the league will get beat from time to time but when you lose the turn over battle, it’s real hard to win. The D can use a little help from the O.

Luck is a good sized boy. Maybe the neckbeard gave him extra strength? I don’t know. It was different with Houston & Henne. Lamarr didn’t get his hands on him. I seem to recall Chad Henne eluding & escaping – rather than actually breaking a tackle. Burnett actually wrapped and still couldn’t bring Luck down. sad day for him as a LINEBACKER. I mean we’re not talking about a DB here, lol

  • SnBG

If DMC can’t get it going let Reece, Jennings and Pryor run the ball. Throw it to Butler and Streater and not to Moore. Get Ford going in the slot and on trick plays. Use DMC as a receiver also to draw coverage and maybe we can move the ball. We’re going to have to throw to beat the Paytons.

  • The_Judge37

I hate the nickename “Tits” only because it’s giving it a negative meaning when tits should be a positive thing. Kinda like how the NFL made the Term “Blackout” a bad thing when we used to use the term for our Qualcom take over.

It’s great to get sacks and lord knows we could use a great natural pass rush but the big boys up front are being very disruptive. That’s a very important thing to have and and a great improvement over last year. As far as Burnett, he made some good plays and one super play. I’ve seen Ray Lewis miss tackles on QBs so it happens.

Gio led the Raiders in interceptions two years in a row.

The year we went 8-8; he made four interceptions that either preserved the victory for the Raiders or gave us the possession to take the lead to earn the victory.

Gio was not an everydown safety, he was great in dime packages, when it was 2nd/3rd and long. He had a nose for the football.

I think he already has and it’s just now beginning to show. Can DMAC build off the Jags game and run for 100+ versus a playoff team and possible SB team?

I do think Ford should be used on reverses, but never on long passes when he’s streaking down the sideline.

  • J Hill

Ford’s speed is something the defense will account for.

I think he can bring more value to the offense.

Run a reverse with him early. Throw it deep to him early to stretch the defense.

A lot of different ways to open up the running lanes for 2 and 20.

  • J Hill

This game will be lower in scoring than most expect.

We will grind the clock and keep the martian on the sideline.

  • bcz24

When Burnett hit Luck, Luck was lucky because he was ‘held up’ by other players around him. Burnett couldn’t drive through and take him to the ground. He should have kept him wrapped though cuz the zebras would have blown the whistle quickly

DMO sees the field and gets a chance to play his way out of his funk until Holmes gets back.

Rock’s favorite player, Jacoby Ford, should be given more run.

The thing that’s so maddening about DMO is that we KNOW he can play better. We’ve seen it.

Was he just a flash in the pan ? Could be.

Maybe he just doesn’t want it anymore.
