Allen, McKenzie deserve major props for keeping players focused on football

ALAMEDA — General manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen made it abundantly clear that they wanted a team filled with high-character players and that off-field transgressions won’t be tolerated. To that end, they have succeeded in spectacular fashion.
Linebacker Kaluka Maiava got in an altercation during the offseason. However, that happened soon after he signed with the Raiders and long before he had a chance to get indoctrinated into The Raiders Way under McKenzie and Allen.
On Friday, I asked Allen about the key to his success in this area as a direct result of the 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith getting arrested earlier today.
“Well, obviously, you try to — and I don’t know the situation that you’re talking about — but you obviously try to work with your guys all the time about making sure that they understand the limelight that they’re in and their responsibility, not only to themselves but to the football team.
“We talk a lot about that. Things come up, and you’ve got to deal with things. We’ll continue to work in that direction. We try to do a good job of being accountable and being responsible both on the field and off the field.”
Cornerback Taiwan Jones was here when McKenzie and Allen arrived in 2012. He said he and his teammates know exactly where McKenzie and Allen stand in regard to their on- and off-field behavior.
“Basically, coach Allen says, we represent the Raiders in everything we do and representing the Raiders is a big responsibility and, not only is it a responsibility, it’s a privilege,” Jones said. “Wearing the silver-and-black is a privilege, and you got to represent it in the right way.”
Jones also has no misgivings about what happens if he fails to adhere to the guidelines set forth by Allen.
“He doesn’t have to harp on it much because he made his statement loud and clear from the beginning,” Jones said. “Our fine is the maximum fine. He stressed that he doesn’t want our money, but we will pay the consequences. He got his message across from Day One.”

To be fair, the Pell Grant, scholarship, and loans sometimes don’t even cover your tuition and books; let alone rent, bills, groceries, and basic spending money. Speaking of course of the many players whose parents have little or nothing to give.

Practice hours are very limited so it’s not exactly a 24-hour buffet they have available.

    Justice for Al

What can a player do to help his team win that won’t be measurable “on paper”?

Statistics simply show what really happened, without our emotional biased opinion.

Ahhhh….they have it great for a college student, and rightfully so.

I just think the compensation and the platform to the NFL is fair.

perfect example was last night’s game.

vick was “electric” on some runs.

    meanwhile, smith was “boring”.

    but smith was far better.

qb’s help their teams two ways:

    1) what they do
    2) what they don’t do

smith managed the game. and won.

    vivk “electrified”. and lost.

College athletes can’t even get with study which is where most if us made our food and spending money. These are $15k per year Universities we’re taking about. $30,000 in loans even on a half ride isn’t much fun nor is it enough for school/rent/food/bills/ and basics no matter how fancy their athlete status is.

It is fair, IF you don’t factor the money being made by schools, bowl games, etc….

simple–if ur making money off me, i have a right as an american to ask for a cut.

Big programs like Alabama, LSU, The OSU, etc can afford to pay coaches millions, but the athletes should be happy with scholarships?
That makes no sense to me.

  • JB

As the old saying goes: USC player had to take a pay cut when they went to the NFL. Somewhere in there is a lot of truth – not only on USC’s part but most of the big football factory schools.

well, u obviously don’t “get it”.

smith DIDN’T turn it over and vick DID.

    that’s the point.

    smith completed 22-35 for 273.

he didn’t throw for a td but he didn’t throw any game killing picks either.

therefore he allowed philly to LOSE the game.

vick went 13-30 for 201, adding 99 on the ground ,but while he threw for 1 td, he threw TWO ints.

    ball game.

    like i said, it’s:

    1) what u do
    2) what u DON’T do.

smith traded blows with vick and allowed vick to LOSE the game, therefore WINNING it himself.

understand? pryor will LOSE the game.

it’s kinda like a tennis match.

    it’s back and forth.

but when there are unforced errors, it gives the other guy the edge.

    football is a slugfest.

turnovers allow the other team to get the upper hand.

its funny that I have visited this site since 2006 and it never fails that there are always Raider hating Raider fans on here!
Ones that cant let the past go.
ones that think they know it all cause they see the news first hand.
ones that think madden is real life play.
ones that refurbish comments and the “experts” words they hear on the show.
ones that come on here just to hate.

Seriously. If Brady went to the jags or browns he’d be out of the league already. And those numbers placed on an individual are skewed by the talent around them. FACT! Look at the patriots this year and how Brady is doing… I’m not saying he’s a bad QB, I’m saying he never would got a fair chance in Cleveland or Jacksonville because it’s the team that would have made him look bad. Without Belicheck he would have never developed into the QB that he is today. It’s pretty obvious.

    @@@@@@@@@

How can you call that a fact when it’s 100% supposition and conjecture? Man, that’s funny. Throw out a random hypothetical w about a hundred different variables and call it a fact? Lmao.

Madden is the only way I’v been able to brag about the Raiders the last few years, especially when I play with the old teams. I always laugh at how strong they made Jamarcus Russell’s arm in ’08.
