Final: Broncos 37, Raiders 21

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 23rd, 2013 at 8:41 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A game the Raiders hoped would cause skeptics to take notice instead turned into a showcase for Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos Monday night at Sports Authority Field.

The final score was 37-21, but the game was essentially over after a nearly perfect first half by Manning against a helpless Oakland defense, much to the delight of a crowd of 76,978.

Manning directed the Broncos to a 27-7 halftime lead, completing 21 of 24 passes for 264 yards and touchdown passes of 2 yards to Eric Decker, 12 yards to Wes Welker and 13 yards to Julius Thomas to go along with field goals of 53 and 41 yards by Matt Prater.

In the second half, Prater kicked a 40-yard field goal and running back Darren McFadden took a pitch and threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Reece on a rollout. The 70-yard scoring drive was set up by Oakland’s first takeaway of the season, a Manning fumble that was recovered by Jason Hunter.

Ronnie Hillman put the Broncos up 37-14 with a 1-yard run with 11:27 left in the game as the Broncos were able to run on the Oakland defense most of the night, making Manning that much tougher.

Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor was the most consistent thing the Raiders had going for them on offense, completing 19 of 28 passes for 281 yards and a 73-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore.

Pryor left the game after taking a hit from Wesley Woodyard while throwing a pass on the Raiders final drive, with Matt Flynn coming in to finish the game.

Following a fumble recovered by the Raiders, Flynn completed a pass to Marcel Reece to the 1-yard line, with McFadden scoring on a 1-yared run with 1:15 remaining.

Pryor’s touchdown pass to Moore, who ran 53 yards after the catch after catching a 20-yard pass, got the Raiders within 17-7 in the first However, the Broncos restored order with an 80-yard drive that took only 2:17 and ended in the Manning-to-Thomas touchdown pass.

On the first play of that drive, Manning found Decker for a 61-yard pass, with Mike Jenkins narrowly missing getting a hand on the ball. Decker, who had six catches for 113 yards in the first half, turned upfield after Jenkins hit the ground and ran to the 19-yard line.

The Raiders failed to get a first down until Pryor raced around left end for 23 yards on a keeper after a play-fake to McFadden. Only 47 seconds remained in the half and Denver had taken a 10-0 lead.

McFadden, who has three games of 100 or more yards against the Broncos in his career, found little or no running room, with 7 carries for 9 yards with a long gain of 4 yards.

It was the Raiders’ fourth consecutive loss to the Broncos, who have won their last 14 regular-season games, including wins by three touchdowns or more against the last two Super Bowl champions to start the season.

Pryor came into this game with a top-10 D, 130-yard RB last week, and was facing the 20th-ranked D, 26th in passing.

    No excuses.

when the boos start next week, maybe just maybe, DA will wise up and get flynn in the game before it’s too late.

    ========================================

Lol, Hack Robert got himself all turned around again. Those boos were for Flynn, guy.

That’s okay. He’s lost in his alternate universe again. Let him be. Poor fella.

Defense being equal I would take P.Manning over any QB in the NFL .

Jonathan please explain how Manziel is overrated the guy cant be stopped he is amazing so please explain if Russel Wilson can succeed so can Manziel who is even faster

    $$$$$$$

He is Kapernick 2.0 he has everything a qb needs to succeed and only looks good because of talent. as a drop back passer he is quick to run, his arm isn’t that strong, he has the best o line other than Alabama and receivers and TE’s to throw too. A lot of people see through his chrade and hey buddy, speed as a qb doesn’t mean he’s Tom Brady 2.0 or the guy we just lost too. Why do u think he left Oregon after they got Mariota or maybe you didn’t know that? He’s a college star but won’t transition well.

EJ Manuel has 4 TD passes and 1 INT

Pryor has 2 TD passes and 2 INT

Pryor has had about 100 more NFL practices than EJ. EJ wins.

Ian, please explain how Pryor lost the game, as you said.

And only a punk would want a punk. Manziel will NEVER be a Raider. He’s a self entitled POS and Reggie doesn’t draft pre-draft busts.

Want a QB? Go ahead, talk about Boyd or Brodgewater or Murray or whatever. You want that punk Manziel? Go root for the Browns.

  • spiff

pryor made plays in the 2nd. half. he had dropped passes in the 1st. half. he didn’t give up 37 points. what was our average field position in the first half. penalties didn’t help. he made 4 bad throws which wouldn’t have changed the game. he made plays from the pocket, hate all you want but it’s true………

  • alex7

    R8ter

you guys were the dummies praising Pryor for one decent quarter in preseason vs 3rd stringers.

Think about how dumb that was. At least Flynn did it vs starters.

Same Broncos D: Pryor 7 points 44 minutes, Flynn 7 points 2 minutes. Deal with it.

  • EMRaiders

    Alex,

yea, a QBs dream, only if his receivers could get open. When they were, he got the ball to them.

Flynn came in close to the redzone, after a turn over with 2 minutes left. His first pass was WAY overthrown, though he could’ve been just throwing it away, because his receiver was COVERED! Then he did throw a nice pass to Reece. On garbage time, when the game was virtually over.

But like I said before. If Pryor is out next week, then we can compare notes after the game. After we see what Flynn can do with the same WRs, Oline, and RB.

461…at that high of a pick you should expect more.

    ===================

Normally you would, if your pick wasn’t coming off a life-threatening injury and missed like 90% of the offseason.

    ==========

All the more reason they should have looked elsewhere due to his injury. Kyle Long anyone?

    ====================

RM deemed him worthy of going that high. Reportedly, there were several others teams who wanted Hayden. I felt that he was the best CB in this draft class. Yeah, I have no problem really with Hayden at 12. He was healthy enough to practice in mini-camp, but then he had to get the scar tissue out so that sidelined him for pretty much the rest of the offseason except for the last week.

In all honesty though, CB is one of the hardest positions to make the transition from college to NFL

“and he leads his receivers into big hits.”

Gruden did comment on that after one TP completion just beyond the flat. He added that a lot of qbs are “throwing into coverage and getting their receivers killed” so it’s not just TP.

  • the amazing dr robert

again, the non-raiders-fans Pryor Brigade celebrates losses and embarrassing ineptitude.

as the losses mount and we simply look nothing like a real nfl team, with a sputtering inconsistent occasional “big play” offense led by a qb who ALWAYS takes forever to finally find an open reciever and then delivers a pass that leads them right into a smashing hit, they cheer like idiots and call it “exciting”.

we have beaten the jags. that’s all we will do until we have a real qb.

  • Al_is_theraiders

bey made 85 look better blocking than
    mastrud….sh!t talk about a whiff….safe at 2nd.

  • alex7

    EMR

    his receivers WERE OPEN.

11:15 4th quarter: slot receiver WIDE OPEN on crossing route. Pryor doesn’t see him, takes the sack.

4th quarter Streater bomb: Streater has a step on defender, ball vastly underthrown, Streater has to slow down and come back to it, DB breaks it up.

Moore bomb down sideline: Moore has step on DB, ball thrown out of bounds.

    These things happened.

  • Al_is_theraiders

i agree but at that pick he should be a game changer…

  • Crawfish Joe

Pryor is the more experienced QB that Flynn. Gotta stay with experience now at this point.

Besides. Pryors potential upside for developing into a top tier QB is much greater than Flynns. So get on board haters.

    losses

    the defense giving up tons

    being a “loser”

  • alex7

even the 4th and goal slant to Moore, he’s open, ball is thrown behind, and Cromartie gets a hand on it SOMEWHERE NEAR MOORE’S BACK SHOULDER.

opportunities were there to at least put up more than 7 points in 44 minutes

    pryor will NEVER be good.

the passing ability required to be good doesn’t exist in him.

I don’t think Pryor can develop into a top tier QB. He is still making rookie mistakes as a 3rd year pro. Still makes too many bad decisions and bad throws. I just don’t think he’ll even be a good enough of a passer to be a top QB.

I agree he was better talent than Millner but IMO the risk/reward ratio with Hayden wasn’t worth it. I understand it’s too early to judge a rookie but a lineman(either side) that were available sounds better than Hayden IMO
