Pryor sends mixed signals about status

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 at 11:26 am in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA – Quarterback Terrelle Pryor seems intent upon a quick return from the concussion he suffered, based on a series of Tweets he fired off Tuesday morning.
“I’m ready to go,” Pryor said via Twitter. He also said, “I feel great, by the way. Thanks for the concern. Go Raiders!”
Maybe so, but Pryor isn’t allowed to practice or play in a game again until he passes the league-mandated protocol for players that suffered a concussion, as Pryor did Monday night late in a 37-21 loss to the Denver Broncos.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday night that he had “no idea” about the status of Pryor for the Raiders game against the Washington Redskins this Sunday.
At first, Pryor sounded like a man that had a ways to go before he gets cleared by team doctors.
His first Tweet on Tuesday said: “Sorry about the loss Raider Nation. I don’t remember much! Good hit by whoever it was. I heard our team fought well. We will be back.”
There is no media access to players today because they received the day off from Allen.
Allen is scheduled to meet with the media for his weekly news conference at 1 p.m.
The Raiders practice Wednesday. If Pryor hasn’t been cleared by that time, Matt Flynn is expected to get the reps with the first-team offense. He relieved Pryor against the Broncos and made his Raiders regular-season debut.

    List of problems we have:

    2nd year HC, GM, Owner

    O-Line injuries

    Cannot stop the run

Poorly run routes with dropped passes with current group of WR’s

Poor field position and opposing team seems to have good Field position every game.

    Poor clock management

    No depth at many positions

Our lease is up in 3 months we have no home

    Many more……

  • the notorious dr robert

at home versus the worst defense in the league and we should win, right?

    no excuses?

    they’re 0-3 after all.

I’m thinking my Hayden pick isn’t.

Doesn’t matter who was most onsistent or made more plays.
Has to be Houston, just for the sack/fumble.

I say Woodson, would’ve been much worse had he not made some great solo tackles.

We have been dreadful on defense for like 5 years now.

38 points in 2010 to 3 QB’s who aren’t even in the league anymore.

    Think about that.

Not sure why last nights game is suddenly getting all the venom out.

We suck defensively, have for sometime, and probably will continue to do so for awhile.
    —-

Because all those 2010 “Check Casher” are gone. 2010 DC is gone.

But in 2013 it’s all good because we had the privalege of having Peyton Manning rip us a new one. It’s cool though because they did it to the Ravens and Giants.

It is not “All good” it is business as usual.

Raider suck. Have for pretty much most of my 33 years on earth.

I am at the stage that I am happy that they just didn’t quit at the end of the game like they have done for half my life.

This may sound crazy to some but I don’t think our defense is that bad. Yes, they need improvement but give credit where credit is do. I saw a number of DBs in position to make plays but Manning dropped it in the correct place time and time again. He is playing at a rediculous level right now. It’s hard to blitz the guy and it’s hard to drop back as well. He picked the defense a part. Plus, he runs the no huddle offense and was getting the ball out faster than I have seen in a long time. Reminded me of the way flat foot Marino would do. it was hard to sack the guy because he released the ball so quick. Manning put on a clinic flat out!

I don’t think most people truly know how good Manning is performing right now. Now, will see what he does in the playoffs. Seen this movie before!

Good lesson last night for this young/patchwork team still working on the details. To keep up with an elite Denver squad you need near elite personnel on the d-line and in the secondary to get pressure/hurries/sacks with only four, while the back end covers/communicates well to keep Manning holding the ball.

In the division the Chefs D has the parts (4 man rush and secondary) and has been playing well on defense. And their O is definitely ball control under Alex Smith/Charles. In the NFL SeaChickens and Saints could beat Denver too. Best secondary in the league and a deep deep rush line in Seattle. Brees can shoot out with anyone and Rob Ryan has improved that D.

Teams with lesser rosters (like the Raiders) need breaks via turnovers, penalties, big special teams plays and a near perfect “time of possession” type of performance from the O. That’s the blueprint that needed to be executed but it didn’t happen.

Check my blog article for key points for both teams that showed up on Monday night – http://shootgap.com/index.php/musings-from-an-optimistic-raider-fan/

    Good –
Team resiliency being down so much. No dogging, giving up by the offense and defense versus a superior team.

Pryor made some great throws from the pocket throughout the game. Gruden and several in game/post game NFL talking head social media agreed. He’s improving but still makes mistakes on not seeing the whole field and not making quick choices to pass or run.

    Bad –
Coaching playcalling for all three Raider head honchos.
Allen: Not going for the 68 yarder before the half,if Jano makes the bomb that’s a slight positive and 3 points. Plus taking the ball first instead of deferring for first 2nd half possession. Play the percentages that Denver will only get 3 on first drive or a possible 3 and out with the O and D playing pumped early.

Olsen: Seeing that the Broncs were clamping down on the middle run but not adjusting. Needed more misdirection, off tackle and sweep type runs instead of the pointless ramming DMC for 3 or negative yards.
Also to folks dogging the read option – the Raiders biggest running play was a read option by Terelle for 23 yards. Broncs were lost on that one so why did we not see that again?

    Tarver:
Tough task for him,but was disappointed that the lack of communication, lack of tackling showed up last night. Raiders D has been sound on that all year. But I felt he should have played a bit more 3 man rush, man coverage on WRs,linebackers switching soft zone or man on Bronco TE/RBs. Got creamed repeatedly to wide open crossing routes in the middle. And if Manning wants to scramble on 3rd & 7,so be it…just hit em’ hard as he tries.

Another thing, after watching Denver games all year you have to TACKLE – they get so much YAC every game. Manning isn’t throwing bombs anymore he carves the middle with 5 to 10 yard intermediate throws on designed pick routes to Wes/Decker/Thomas and goes bubble screen A LOT.

    Ugly-
    Dropped passes.

The line play of Wiz/Gurode/Briesel. They got dominated by Knighton/Vickerson/Williams/Wolfe.

Starting like 5 drives with a big penalty right off the bat (either holding, procedural and the BS Rivera call) cannot do that when you hold a Denver team to 3 on one drive and a punt on another, it was still 10-0 at this point.

Raiders overall defense vs. the run. Coming into the game Oakland was top 10 in rushing defense allowing avg 80 yard a game. Denver was in the bottom 10 rushing teams, and are now top 15 after Oakland let them gash for 160 something last night.

    Game changing moment-
After Denarius Moore’s TD catch and run, score 17-7 Denver. The next defensive drive was crucial with a 3 & out stop or forced punt after some Manning 1st downs. The first play was a 10 yard pass on the sideline to Decker,Jenkins made a break for the ball… felt it graze his finger tips…Decker snatches, spins and rumbles for more Donkey YAC yards like they have all year.

Jenkins should have just layed the wood in hindsight.

Hope Pryor is fine, but will root for Flynn if he gets the start. He’s a good back up QB in this league compared to the “Boller year” while the Raiders starting QB gets his head right.

But bottom line is both of the Raider offensive and defensive lines are and will continue to be weak points of this squad until health, the 2014 draft and/or FA is complete.

Just Fire call me crazy but I can see our defense starting to come together. We need Sio back to use his speed from sideline to sideline. And we need some more defensive rushers in the draft this year but we’re getting better. As crazy, as it sounds I really think we are.
