Good luck making sense of concussions

So NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league’s protocol regarding concussions served its purpose with regard to Terrelle Pryor.

The whole issue of whether the Pryor situation was handled correctly was overblown because the league can’t possibly be ahead of the medical profession when it comes to the issue of brain injuries of any type.

Yes, Pryor played two plays after taking a blow to the head. Then he apparently felt worse afterward. From personal family experience, this isn’t unusual.

About a year go, my son was removing his helmet after a baserunning drill just in time to get nailed in the head with an errant infield throw from the shortstop. Coaches came over, as did the trainer. Questions were asked. They looked in his eyes. He knew where he was and what he was doing. Wanted to get back to practice.

He took his last round of batting practice. Then on the way to the gym, he began to feel nausea. My wife took him to get checked out, and was told to keep an eye on him but that he seemed fine. He later threw up, so it was a trip to the emergency room, a CT scan, etc. , etc.

This was several hours after the trauma.

He’s fine, and was much luckier than a teammate who had a similar incident but had a much rougher road to recovery.

I remember talking to former Raiders special teamer Ricky Brown, who was diagnosed with a concussion after a game that he finished. Said he felt fine. Finished the game, went home, was watching a movie with his wife then had an overwhelming feeling of sickness and dizziness.

The concussion wasn’t diagnosed until hours later.

So before assuming medical staffs automatically send players back on the field without proper diagnosis, consider that the diagnosis is very tricky.

    THIS!!

  • Theghostronin79

It’s like the line of scrimmage is “Magical” or something. If he passes it, he becomes more powerful. It’s weird.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

A blade of grass touches his weak feet…..he is DOWN!

  • Charlie

    East Oak
Guys like Pashos, Gurode and Barnes are great backups but they will not get us into the playoffs. Brisiel is also on the wrong side of 30.
Veld, Wiz and Watson are a good core but I think we need a solid guard.
I see us drfating a guard in round two next year unless we get a solid YOUNG FA.

  • Theghostronin79

Come on now…..He DOES get tripped up EASY as FU*K….But when he gets going, he knocks the sh*t out of defenders.

  • eastoaklandraider

Jhill do you remember before bergs was hurt DA said he needs to work on being more powerful? thats not good cuz how you gonna learn to be more powerful? Either you are or your not imo, at this level anyway,.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

C’mon Silver, it’s a new day. Let it go.
If he does it again, that’s a different story.

  • Jon Train

OK. That’s in direct contradiction to the entire past and present of professional football…but OK.

Miami Dolphins lost Jake Long, but gained Mike Wallace. how could they possibly be 3-0 ??

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Besides, I can only follw so many cat fights at the same time with this new format.

Could someone please explain to me why we fired Krapp for this new OC?

I swear they seem like the same guy.

f you listen to ex players and coaches and Qb’s they will all tell the game is won and lost in the trenches period. (Shot out to Priest)
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I hope that’s supposed to be shout out to Priest, East, because like Starbucks, we don’t allow guns in here.

  • Theghostronin79

I’ve seen him go down from plenty of phantom tackles too…Aggravating.

    BIG UGLIES my arsse!!!

Sure they can make it easier.

Give me a heady QB, a decent OC, and some weapons for him to throw to and I’ll smash your team of big uglies all day long.

    —————–

OK you have all that in ATL right? I bet they dont win it all just like they folded last year to SEA(Lost lead and hung on by a fingernail) then did the same thing with the 9ers(that time they wernt so lucky)

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

    okay

  • Charlie

    RR
Last year it was Knapp’s fault. This year it is Olson.
Was it also the fault of Saunders? Jax? Walsh? How about Raye????
All of thsoe guys got pounded and could not compete against playoff defenses beacuse our Olines have sucked for a decade.
49-111 under SEVEN DIFERENT coaching staffs over the last ten years and you want to blame coaches?????????
Absurd. Get better players especially on the lines.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Why not just admit that the game is changing. It used to be more about the LOS battles now its more of a passing league with all the rule changes. We are more like arena football today than we were 10 years ago.

  • J Hill

    No.

The HC said I’d like to see him be a bit more powerful in the run game. The HC has said the same type of “needs to improve” things when talking about all of our players.

JFB and I pointed out to you SEVERAL times how Bergstrom was looking solid, not great, when we rewatched the games on DVR.

I get it, you don’t like him. Sure a 1st rd OG MIGHT be better. Just sucks for you because there is NO WAY you are getting your wish. GM is not on the same page with you, lol.

They are hot now but do you see them continuing that? I dont.

Yeah its like here he is one on one in the open field it should be a TD every time but he gets tackled…..smh

  • Jon Train

How do ya’ll think we played em so close last year? They are a finesse team…weak in the trenches. Last year they had arguably the best talent in the league around the perimeter of the field on O and on D. But they could only beat us by 3. AZ, too.

  • J Hill

    I think Matty Waters SUCKS!

    ATL is not the example.

The game has changed, but some things will never change, and winning in the trenches is something that will never change. This is why ATL or DEN wont win the SB imo.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

The old days of battling it out in the trenches with tough guys that are bruised, bloodied and have dirt in their face mask are over. This is a passing league now and we play our games indoors and even in Seattle if there is a threat of bad weather they delay games.

  • J Hill

    Ok, ok …

Which team is the example of the BIG UGLIES winning playoff games?

  • Theghostronin79

How about……..Every position has to be GOOD, and all 3 phases have to be good…..Every position can mask deficiencies of others, and vice versa….Nobody is right, and nobody is wrong..
Too many damn variables to narrow down to any ONE thing. It’s all a wash fellas.

  • brad

I’m getting close to my wits end with this debate about who sucks! the whole team had issues last game! this is not pony you score I score! Its time for someone to hold up their end of the deal coaching wise! where is the adjustments? If you can’t run up the gut ,try something else like a sweep! You can’t let a guy slow as my son to run by you untouched and score! Stop dwelling on the bull and look at the facts. it’s time for Dennis Allen to loosen up that headset cord so he can get over and get the attention of who ever he needs to talk to! Not just at Half Time! This attitude of oh we got several years is bull! Reggie needs a head set!

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

When you drop back and throw the ball 60 times a game there is not much battling going on in the trenches when you have 6 or 7 guys in coverage or you are only rushing 3 DL men.

Charlie, actually Big Ben/ARodgers/Flacco won SB’s with atrocious O-Lines. Guess what? Peyton Manning lost his Pro Bowl Left Tackle and he’s currently working with a backup guard as his starting Center. nobody even notices. Barnes & Pashos are doing a fine job. Wiz isn’t the only solid o-line piece right now. Again – wake up!
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Peyton not only lost his Pro Bowl LT but he’s also currently working on his third center for this year.
Wiz isn’t the solid 0-line piece right now?
Always did prefer Wiz at left guard.
When he paired up with Veldheer on the left and we had Satelle-even though Satelle was never anything more than average-as center, we really had something going.
That’s also when we had a running game.
Little Wiz is an adequate center but he could could use more size and arm length.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Agree with the several years bull. The time is now. The time is always now.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Amen. But then what do we argue about?

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

Seattle is a perfect example of a throw back team that will dominate you in the trenches. They run the ball over 55% of the time.

Denver and New Orleans are the opposite they want to throw the ball 55-60 times a game.

One of these three teams has a recent Super Bowl trophy.
