Good luck making sense of concussions

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, September 26th, 2013 at 7:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.

So NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league’s protocol regarding concussions served its purpose with regard to Terrelle Pryor.

The whole issue of whether the Pryor situation was handled correctly was overblown because the league can’t possibly be ahead of the medical profession when it comes to the issue of brain injuries of any type.

Yes, Pryor played two plays after taking a blow to the head. Then he apparently felt worse afterward. From personal family experience, this isn’t unusual.

About a year go, my son was removing his helmet after a baserunning drill just in time to get nailed in the head with an errant infield throw from the shortstop. Coaches came over, as did the trainer. Questions were asked. They looked in his eyes. He knew where he was and what he was doing. Wanted to get back to practice.

He took his last round of batting practice. Then on the way to the gym, he began to feel nausea. My wife took him to get checked out, and was told to keep an eye on him but that he seemed fine. He later threw up, so it was a trip to the emergency room, a CT scan, etc. , etc.

This was several hours after the trauma.

He’s fine, and was much luckier than a teammate who had a similar incident but had a much rougher road to recovery.

I remember talking to former Raiders special teamer Ricky Brown, who was diagnosed with a concussion after a game that he finished. Said he felt fine. Finished the game, went home, was watching a movie with his wife then had an overwhelming feeling of sickness and dizziness.

The concussion wasn’t diagnosed until hours later.

So before assuming medical staffs automatically send players back on the field without proper diagnosis, consider that the diagnosis is very tricky.

    SF and Seattle?????

Is it the big uglies is Seattle or them having to honor Wilson’s threat to run?

SF hasn’t been able to run the ball all season until they met up with the lambs. 1st rd picks and all. Their previous win was due to Kapernick having a career passing day.

Cable walks on water in the Pacific Northwest he has that O-Line working well.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Right now, I would pick the Dodgers to be there.
They might even be playing the A’s.

But if you don’t refresh, you don’t see the pictures people post.
    So I don’t.

Why don’t we try these with Janikowski?

The rule is an obscure one. Any team that fair catches a punt then can subsequently attempt a free kick, like a kickoff, that counts for three points if it goes through the uprights. The best part? The defense can’t rush the kick.

Whenn Cable was OLC here he had our OL working well.
People were coming on here demanding that Cable be given a new multi-year contract.
As a HC he was no better than average but as an OL coach he was good and certainly the players swore by him.

C’mon man are you serious? Sea has a beastly oline and so does SF and they both have stout front 7′s

How do you think the 9ers made the SB last year? Power running game and D they got back to it last night and if they wanna win they must stick with the run game.

C’mon J dont make me doubt your football knowledge.

People coming into Starbucks needing their coffee? Eff that, they shouldn’t have guns. Coffee people in the morning are like tweakers.

Cool. This editing thing is great.

Shanarat still has big love for us, even with Al gone.

“I know one thing – it’s that he’s a competitor,” Shanahan said. “When
you get down or you don’t have a great game, he’s going to do everything
he can, or he can do, to get himself the best opportunity to be
successful. And that’s what he does. He’s a hard worker and hopefully
he’ll play his best game of the year this weekend.”

Texans have a good oline for what they do and also have a stout front 7 so they too will be in the running.

Caveat. We don’t see your edit unless we refresh our page.

    Other way around.

what would Seattle offense be without skill players Wilson & Lynch? replace them with Matt Flynn and that guy named Turbin. let me know asap. thanks. Same question applies at SF with CK, Gore, Boldin & Davis. insert McCoy, Hunter, Williams & McDonald. still top ranked due to those excellent o-lines? pfft

  • Goldie7

Superb story! Thanks a million for sharing your personal story about your son Jer.! I know that it can be fairly odd opening up about personal matters. I hope that your son is healing greatly over that nasty concussion.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Every single great Raider team had a pretty good offenisive line.

  • 24

    Let’s argue about the weather…argh!

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

Texans O-Line lost starters Eric Winston & Mike Brisiel and nobody noticed. Also OT Duane Brown has been injured. dynamic offense has more to do with Schaub, Foster, Johnson & Daniels maybe ??

  • J Hill

Seattle has beast Oline or they have Cable’s system???

Who are the 1st rd picks on Seattle’s Oline other than Okung?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist
  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

I think its a little of both

  • J Hill

SF has Boldin, Davis, Gore, and Kapernick at the skill positions. I’d argue THAT is why they are finally winning some games. They weren’t this “dominant” team before the skill positions arrived.

They have good coaching with good players but the lost of Okung will hurt later on in the season

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

Jhill, Charlie thinks Indy made the playoffs because of Castonzo – not Luck & Wayne. Nothing to do with Arians or Hilton either.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

I would agree that its a little bit of both. Good coaching and good players that buy into the system.

How come everybody os all discreet with there profile pic? Why dont we all put up a face shot?? Ugly, old, rapiest looking, watever??

  • 24

    Same players.

  • bcz24

You can only do it inside the 2 minute warning (at least that’s what they said last night).

  • J Hill

Denver has a noodle armed egged headed QB, 2 WHITE WRs, and a make shift Oline and they are clearly dominating the league.

I don’t want to hear about BIG UGLIES.

    ———

you are losing me, they had Gore and Davis for years along with a good D, but it wasnt til they put that powerful oline in front of ASmith(who was getting killed previously) that they started having more success because they could sustain drives a lot better than before which in return kept their D fresh which allowed them to get their shin on as well.

  • J Hill

Matt Flynn is going to smash Washington’s D because he’s smart enough to throw the ball to Reece.

He’s going to do so with barnes at LT, lol, and Pasho at RT.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Didn’t know that.

You seem clueless at the moment J, its not how you start its how you finish, how many rings does the great Manning have with all his offensive records? ONE thats not enough for all the hype we’ve had to endure over the years.

  • J Hill

How many 1st rd picks does Cleveland have on their Oline?

Didn’t Pittsburgh spend a bunch of high picks on their Oline?

    How about the Jags???

Listen and listen good, its a Qb oline league, Cle is a good team all they are missing IS the Qb

Pitt has neglected their line for years now and you see where it has gotten them

Chi addressed their oline adnd they look light years better on O and Cutlers staying upright.
