Sanford, Crawford in line for playing time Sunday

By Steve Corkran
Friday, September 27th, 2013 at 3:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA — Left defensive end Jason Hunter missed all three practices this week with a sore quadriceps. Even so, coach Dennis Allen is leaving open the possibility of Hunter healing well enough to give it a go against the Washington Redskins.
More than likely, though, Hunter won’t be able to play — he’s listed as questionable — and the Raiders will turn to Brian Sanford and Jack Crawford to help fill the void.
Sanford is a third-year players out of Temple. Crawford is in his second season out of Penn State. Allen feels as if Sanford is a bit ahead of Crawford in terms of being a polished all-around player.
“He’s got some versatility,” Allen said of Sanford. “He can play inside in the nickel, he’s got a little bit of rush ability but he’s also athletic enough that he can play some base defensive end for us and that’s really the role that he’s played on our defense.”
As for Crawford, he didn’t play much his rookie season, as the Raiders leaned heavily upon veterans Lamarr Houston, Andre Carter and others.
If Hunter can’t play Sunday, it’s an ideal opportunity for Crawford to make a case for more playing time from here on out.
“There’s still a lot of improvement that he needs to make,” Allen said of Crawford. “We feel good with some of the guys that we have and feel good with Brian Sanford going in there. … It would be a great opportunity for Jack if Jason’s not able to go, to get in and play and do some good things.”

– Rookie offensive tackle Menelik Watson hasn’t played all season because of a torn ligament in his right knee that required surgery.
Allen said he is “hopeful” that Watson will be cleared to resume practicing next week. Watson missed most of training camp with an injury he suffered during the offseason and then got shut down a few days after he first practiced in camp.
It will be interesting to see what the Raiders do upon Watson’s return. He was slated to start the regular-season opener at left offensive tackle.
Khalif Barnes is at the left tackle spot now, with veteran Tony Pashos playing well at the right tackle spot. It says here that Watson goes to left tackle — at least until Jared Veldheer returns from his triceps injury — and Barnes moves into one of the guard spots.

– Here are the official status reports of the injured Raiders for Sunday’s game:
SS Tyvon Branch (out); Hunter, LB Sio Moore (probable), G Lucas Nix (questionable), FB Jamize Olawale (probable), CB Tracy Porter (probable), QB Terrelle Pryor (questionable) and Watson (out).

IF Pryor starts and the offense is stagnant and we lose I would like to see Flynn in there to see how if he help get us some wins.
I hope we win w/ Pryor and we don’t have to worry about it.
But I think it’s a fair debate to discuss just how much leeway Pryor should have.
I’m for whatever gives us best chance to win.

  • the soulful dr robert

    he has been accurate.

    with the dink and dunks.

he has not thrown a good deep ball at all.

  • Smitttstyles

Sure, whatever. He threw three to four passes that were 15+ yards downfield against Denver – that’s a fact. They were accurate, and on time, that’s a fact. He doesn’t really HAVE anyone to throw deep to – that’s also sadly a fact.

  • the soulful dr robert

    for me it’s clear:

u MUST anticipate and staying with what isn’t working will just get u more losses.

    go for the big win.

if it fails, go back to “developing”.

but have some balls. use flynn. he’s there.

  • EMRaiders

I agree, it’s completely fair. But I think Pryor deserves more than 3 games, no?

  • Smitttstyles

They also know that Pryor gives the Raiders the best chance to win against a porous defense that’s been exploited repeatedly this season and that Flynn will be chopped up and eaten for lunch by Orakpo and Kerrigan – hence the number. If Pryor was a go from day one, as I said either OFF or Raiders by a slight margin – but we’ll see where the money goes when Pryor’s health is revealed and what happens with the books then

  • the soulful dr robert

not if u wanna win. that’s for “development” in a lost season.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I hesitate to even mention Flynn or Pryor because of the ridiculously venomous overreaction you’re going to get from one side or the other. I’m not overly vested in either, I just want a good QB. Prior has a sentimental edge, but if he’s not getting it done, Al would be the first to throw sentiment out the window.

  • DJ Johnny

Pryor lost a close game to Indy on the road. Then we won the 2nd game with him at QB. Then we lost to Denver on the road. The same Denver that annihilated NYG in addition to Flacco and Balt.
You don’t yank Pryor cuz he lost to Denver on the road imo.
You do however consider it if he plays badly and loses to Wsh at home.
    Imo.

  • Smitttstyles

Is Flynn going to suddenly start tackling better on defense and covering receivers? Because our problems go far deeper than QB – and Pryor at least gives us a shot to do something on offense.

  • EMRaiders

we are far from a lost season though. So let’s say they start Flynn the next 3 games, and we go 1-2. Then what? Do we stay with him at 2-4, or do we go back to Pryor?

  • seymour bush

If? You watched the last game right?

  • the soulful dr robert

if DA doesn’t have the balls to go for a win, then he’s just keeping the seat warm for someone who will.

no way we go to the playoffs with pryor.

but it could happen with flynn.

we have seen what pryor can do and no one thinks he will take us there this year, if ever.

u spent the fvcking money. put him out there so u don’t have to wonder.

that’s the problem. if pryor squanders this opportunity, we can’t get it back.

it’s called going for it. reach DA!

  • marks hair

nah.. Pryors been showing steady improvement. Flynns shown a weak arm.. its all about the qb in this league. give TP the season and if he’s not the guy you draft one.

  • the soulful dr robert

fvck u loser. i want wins now.

  • Smitttstyles

Actually, despite the clear favour for one over the other the prevailing opinion of most in here is that we just want to win, period. So you can mention either or with no worries, I should think. Dr. Robert and I both seem to have the strongest opinions either way and neither of us has been venomous in the least.

  • EMRaiders

Considering Pryor is thought as the lesser QB, wouldn’t DA be reaching now by starting him?

  • the soulful dr robert

if flynn fails, then fvck him.

  • the soulful dr robert

he lost the indy game by himself.

  • Smitttstyles

And once again how does Flynn give us that chance, exactly? We’ve talked about QB but this team is losing on the line and in coverage – Pryor didn’t lose the Denver game for us. He was the only thing keeping it respectable, frankly.

  • EMRaiders

So you would go back to Pryor then? If so, then why not let Pryor play at least 2 more games, and see how he does. And then put Flynn in if he doesn’t show improvement and struggles.

  • Smitttstyles

Same with Pryor – which he has not thus far.

  • the soulful dr robert

    this is true.

u like pryor and see it very different but i haven’t attacked u and vice versa even when we staraight up said the other one was wrong.

too many wusses in the crowd.

  • marks hair

there’s the troll I know.. was wondering how long you’d pretend to want to just talk football.

  • the soulful dr robert

i have heard that he does.

    haven’t much seen it.

  • Smitttstyles

That’s utter bull-ish and you know it. Our lack of ability to shut down luck combined with Pryor’s bad decision lost that game – but we aren’t even in it without him. He led the NFL in rushing on the Sunday – don’t tell me that wasn’t a factor in keeping that game close. He contributed to the loss – which would’ve been a blowout without him

  • the soulful dr robert

because the opportunity to win is now or never.

if flynn fails, then back to pryor to see what he can be by year’s end.

but this is a WINNABLE game and we have a lot of those coming up.

    go for the brass ring.

  • the soulful dr robert

he was what i call a “magnificent failure”.

took us close and demolished it too.

  • the soulful dr robert

we practically KNOW pryor won’t win.

flynn’s arm is fresh. bring him in and let him pass 60 times.

  • EMRaiders

I feel the same way, except with Pryor at QB. Too bad we can’t start both QBs at each game to see who really gives the best chance…….or can we?

  • Smitttstyles

he’s proven he can complete a higher percentage of his passes than 20+ other QB’s while maintaining a respectable YPA average. Putting the losses solely on Pryor when the talent level on the team is, frankly, sub par and there were salary cap purges and such, is simply not factual. The Raiders are not a good overall team talent wise, as much as that hurts to say, and so maybe, just maybe they were beaten by superior opponents???

  • the soulful dr robert

    cuz u don’t talk football.

    u talk agenda.

    look at ur post.

u don’t want wins. u only want pryor and u hate the idea of seeing flynn.

  • seymour bush

MH, this is a really good post. And I have to say, you have been exemplary in your posts. And Pryor HAS shown steady improvement. But the bottom line is Pryor has done NOTHING to warrant an NFL starting gig. His first start he sucked until the game was out of reach. His second start, he made crucial errors that cost the game. His third start was against the worst team the league has EVER seen. His fourth start he was horrible until the game was out of reach, AGAIN. Have we not seen enough?

  • Smitttstyles

it was heartbreaking, no doubt. I call that the “Carson Palmer” but magnificent failure has a great ring to it

  • the soulful dr robert

it’s simple. to win in the nfl, u must be able to put together consistent td drives.

pryor can’t do that. never has.

    flynn has done it.

    480 yards and 6 tds.

he has done it and it’s FACT.

roll with the record breaking passer and go for the big win.

  • xXRaider2DaHeartXx

Yo how do i upload my personal pic?? I mean i go to the edit, change the avatar, but i notice it doesnt say save after image is uploaded.???

  • seymour bush

The playoffs with Pryor? We couldn’t even get a lst down with Pryor against a playoff caliber opponent, Next….

  • the soulful dr robert

hey palmer killed me with that stuff too but he had great arm talent.

but in reality, he has only been mediocre since his injury.

  • marks hair

what tp did to warrant a starting gig was beat out flynn.. although that was hardly a test..

  • EMRaiders

It does, you have to scroll to the bottom of the page where you upload the pic.

  • Smitttstyles

PLEASE stop bringing up the Detroit game – it’s like running into a buddy from high school who’s fat, bald and jobless and he’s like “remember all those chicks i used to bang…” it’s irrelevant because it was a meaningless game against a historically bad defense – and even that game couldn’t get him the cache to win the starting job for two weak franchises (Seattle not now, but then)

  • the soulful dr robert

    he NEVER beat him out.

it was either injury or a horrendous decision.

    but he never outplayed him.

  • the soulful dr robert

no. it counts. and it was only 20 months ago.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

As EM said, are you clicking ‘save changes’ at the bottom?

  • Smitttstyles

yep, but he’s ALWAYS had that penchant to break hearts, even when he was good in Cincy – just has a knack for bad timing

  • the soulful dr robert

i already suspect DA is a poor decision maker (maybe that’s why he likes pryor–birds of a feather), but i will know all i need to know about him sunday.

go for it and start flynn and u have balls.

“stay the course” and ur a loser puss.

  • EMRaiders

Yea, but compare the talent around him then and the talent around him now.

  • Smitttstyles

Once again, garbage game against a garbage defense. It counts – like a preseason game counts – not a basis for success or he’d be starting

  • the soulful dr robert

    yeah, fvck him.

  • seymour bush

I agree with Doc Rob here. I wrote at the beginning of August that Allen should start Pryor. Because the fans were behind Pryor. For no other reason. And if Pryor rolled, he had the right Q. If Pryor failed, he could bring in Flynn with no pressure in a no lose situation. Well……
