Final: Redskins 24, Raiders 14

With Terrelle Pryor on the sidelines dealing with the after-effects of a concussion and running backs Darren McFadden and Marcel Reece out by halftime because of injuries, the punchless Raiders fell 24-14 to the Washington Redskins Sunday at O.co Coliseum.

The Raiders finish the first quarter of the season with a 1-3 record after finding themselves unable to build on a 14-0 first-quarter lead because of an inability to move the ball consistently.

Washington, which came in giving up an NFL high 488 yards per game in an 0-3 start, got a lot better against an Oakland offense directed by Matt Flynn.

The Raiders were reportedly leaning toward starting Pryor after he was cleared to play Friday, but according to Fox Sports, the quarterback began having concussion symptoms Saturday evening.

With the Raiders leading 14-3, Flynn threw an interception directly to David Amerson that was run back 45 yards for a touchdown and was too often unable to find receivers or deliver first downs to keep drives alive.

The Redskins took the lead for good with 2:58 left in the third quarter when Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III hit Pierre Garcon on a 5-yard slant against rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden.

Washington put the game away when San Ramon Valley High product Roy Helu Jr. ran 14 yards through the heart of the Oakland defense for a touchdown with 6:59 left. The score was set up when Ryan Kerrigan stripped Flynn on a dropback, with Barry Cofield recovering at the Oakland 28-yard line.

The Raiders struck first when Rashad Jennings blocked a Sav Rocca punt, with James Stewart recovering in the end zone. Flynn made it 14-0 with an 18-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Mychal Rivera.

Flynn, booed heavily following the last turnover, completed 20 of 31 passes for 210 yards with the touchdown pass and interception which was returned for a touchdown. He was sacked seven times by a defense that wasn’t shackled by the threat of Pryor’s breakaway runs as the previous three opponents were.

McFadden, who had some strong runs early in the game, left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and was in street clothes during the second half. He had five carries for 29 yards. Reece departed with a knee injury in the second quarter and did not return.

Griffin, although not nearly the runner he was as a rookie as he recovers from reconstructed knee surgery, completed 18 of 31 passes for 227 yards and the touchdown to Garcon.

Matt Leinart is better than Flynn

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Grimmace has found Streeter & Rivera. The only way they keep their jobs is due to the one guy they didn’t want. If they don’t show some more, Mark is going to call up Jon

As is typically the case in the NFL, we have won the only game we had the better QB and lost the other games we didn’t.
    NO QB = NO CHANCE
The Ravens returned all 5 offensive line starters, none has missed a game, but they lost a TE, Boldin and Rice has been hurt, and they are awful.
We need to draft ALL SKILL PLAYERS and some pass rushers.

  • http://raiders.com/ Crawfish Joe

He better hire a bona fide HC, not some green horn. That much will be crucial.

  • 0ak R8rs

I haven’t seen anything to justify firing DA this year. It should be obvious to most we r seriously lacking on talent. We r short FIFTY MILLION IN SALARY!!! Holy crap.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Obviously, but this team has many problems.

  • tuckrulefool

    UNFATHOMABLE

  • KoolKell

Reggie has put a pretty good roster together. Besides Flynn. Which was an insurance policy, albeit not the “Good Hands” one.

  • Taiwan_Raiders

Yeah, they could be just disorganize right now. That’s what really pizzed me off. We might just have jump started Shanahan’s season.

  • AbusedByAl

If you fire DA you can fire RM right with him because he wanted him, and RM’s record is also very much open for debate…

  • fingersrdrs

Pryor gives the Raiders the best chance with our pitiful oline play

  • RaiderGuy50

listening to 95.7 the game and comments from the other pissed off fans at the game. But, like one fan said – there were good things today- the defense was balling and special teams looked great! when could we have said that. flynn just brings this team DOWN- He just does not have IT!!!
Its painful- but i do see the positives with the defense and special teams are coming along-
I am starting to lose faith in DMC – not looking like he might not get that contract – or trade bait ??
    Pryor get better buddy!!!

  • Rico Stifler

You’re an idiot cuz you blame RM for Knapp, Brisiel and Bergstrom when Knapp was DA’s choice for OC and RM only signed/drafted Brisiel and Bergstrom cuz they fit the ZBS. They’re signing and drafting goes back to Knapp’s hiring by DA.

Also, in Hayden’s defense, he missed like 90% of the offseason recovering from surgery to remove scar tissue. These four games have been his first real game action since his injury in November. Also, CB is one of the harder positions to make the transition from NCAA to NFL.

    Is Josh McClown still around?

    2013 RG3 <<<<<< 2013 TP2

    Sorry (not sorry, actually)

  • Morilla_00

Listen to 97.5fm. If you cant go to the website or download the app. Holy sh-t. Flynn is getting cannabalized by everyone and the hosts.

To The People Saying Flynn didn’t restructure his contract a 2nd time HERE YOU GO

    http://www.silverandblackpride.com/2013/5/23/4359682/oakland-raiders-restructure-matt-flynn-contract

No need to apologize, we have all been wrong before, but I knew I was right this time and ya’ll got me a lil heated

  • NYCRaider

TP2 saved the season for RM.

  • Raider_Riff

I never thought I’d see a worse backup QB than Kyle Boller….
well done Flynn. You piece of schit.

  • Just Fire Baby

As sad as Flynn was, sitting Pryor was the absolute right choice.
A concussion in your 4th career start is scary, and a potential career disruptor.
ONce you get a concussion, each one comes easier and lasts longer.
    I blame Jim Tressel.

  • Back-N-Black

when Watson and Veldheer get healthy the line will stabilize. Team needs a QB and 1 Top Tier WR

  • Morilla_00

Someone should send him some cookies.

  • AbusedByAl

McClown is in Chicago now I think.

  • Rico Stifler

RG3 is still recovering from his ACL surgery. Pryor just isn’t very good. He’s the best option for what we have, but that’s not a good thing though. I don’t see Pryor as the Raider’s starter beyond this year.

  • 0ak R8rs

If McFadden misses any kind of time w this hamstring we’d be luck to get a hot dog vendor and a bag of balls for him. He’s worthless of he can stay on the field. And it’s not like we r the only ones that know that.

  • JaMarcusGotScrewed

Anyone that’s still stupid enough to believe the “conventional wisdom” that the safest place on the football field is the pocket needs to see the Jake Locker play. Yikes!

  • Morilla_00

I’m fine with it. Jennings is a baller.

  • David C. Moorman

Embarassed to be a Raiders fan.

  • 0ak R8rs

Who said you were wrong? But good job! Haha

  • Nick Gancayco

Cut flynn. Sign vince young for the minimum. Vince young probably could have got us a W today.

  • Steveopa

Pryor deserves this year and next year to prove if he is the answer at QB. Which I think he is. I think Dennis Allen should also get another year along with the entire coaching staff.

  • AbusedByAl

Good night everyone. Let’s just hope TP gets healthy again and play next week….

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Opt

Really, where are these never commented before people coming from? If just one would answer, I ‘d quit asking.

  • David C. Moorman

    Dennis Allen who?

  • Reggie Fangaz

    paging dr. robert….

  • tuckrulefool

TP2 said this was his 1st (ever) concussion. As much as I HATED seeing Flynn play like that, you are right. I am just pissed our backups (yet again – see Boller) have to be AWFUL. That game was SO winable with even reasonable QB play. Clearly McGloin has to be number 2 now….Right?? Sadly DA is pig-headed and I bet ‘no’….Plus RM cant possible admit EPIC failure and cut him. Can he ?? Of course not…

  • nolimits3333

    Where is Dr. Robert?

  • Raider_Riff

Flynn is telling the beat writers that he felt he was seeing the field well today.

Thats the problem. He saw the field.

  • nolimits3333

Does he have the guts to admit he was wrong?

  • Dakota

at least we have each other!

  • RealTruRaider

Doesn’t matter, there was a couple posters that kept replying WRONG when I would post that we reworked his contract twice and the 2nd time we ended up pushing cap hit/money into next year

  • Try Some Reality

Crying into his pillow. Good thing too. The only good thing to come from today is this blog is rid of him for a few hours.

  • Rico Stifler

lol. I had read nothing at all about the 2nd restructuring, but yah. I found it earlier. It was a minor thing though. All it was was converting some base salary into a bonus. All it does is spread out the bonus over this and next year. So it just means we’ll take a small cap hit when we cut Flynn.

  • Reggie Fangaz

    hell no.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Yeah, you don’t screw around with concussions.

  • KoolKell

    Lol

  • http://raiders.com/ Crawfish Joe

On the slightly brighter side, we have a better record than Pittsburg and NY Giants and they are miserable too

  • David C. Moorman

McFadden should’a been traded years ago. Are you listening RM?

  • NYCRaider

olson needs to work on a hurry up offense. down 2 scores with 4 minutes to go and your unit is spending alot of time in a huddle? made no sense

  • RealTruRaider

Is he taking responsibility at least?
