Final: Redskins 24, Raiders 14

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 29th, 2013 at 4:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.

With Terrelle Pryor on the sidelines dealing with the after-effects of a concussion and running backs Darren McFadden and Marcel Reece out by halftime because of injuries, the punchless Raiders fell 24-14 to the Washington Redskins Sunday at O.co Coliseum.

The Raiders finish the first quarter of the season with a 1-3 record after finding themselves unable to build on a 14-0 first-quarter lead because of an inability to move the ball consistently.

Washington, which came in giving up an NFL high 488 yards per game in an 0-3 start, got a lot better against an Oakland offense directed by Matt Flynn.

The Raiders were reportedly leaning toward starting Pryor after he was cleared to play Friday, but according to Fox Sports, the quarterback began having concussion symptoms Saturday evening.

With the Raiders leading 14-3, Flynn threw an interception directly to David Amerson that was run back 45 yards for a touchdown and was too often unable to find receivers or deliver first downs to keep drives alive.

The Redskins took the lead for good with 2:58 left in the third quarter when Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III hit Pierre Garcon on a 5-yard slant against rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden.

Washington put the game away when San Ramon Valley High product Roy Helu Jr. ran 14 yards through the heart of the Oakland defense for a touchdown with 6:59 left. The score was set up when Ryan Kerrigan stripped Flynn on a dropback, with Barry Cofield recovering at the Oakland 28-yard line.

The Raiders struck first when Rashad Jennings blocked a Sav Rocca punt, with James Stewart recovering in the end zone. Flynn made it 14-0 with an 18-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Mychal Rivera.

Flynn, booed heavily following the last turnover, completed 20 of 31 passes for 210 yards with the touchdown pass and interception which was returned for a touchdown. He was sacked seven times by a defense that wasn’t shackled by the threat of Pryor’s breakaway runs as the previous three opponents were.

McFadden, who had some strong runs early in the game, left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and was in street clothes during the second half. He had five carries for 29 yards. Reece departed with a knee injury in the second quarter and did not return.

Griffin, although not nearly the runner he was as a rookie as he recovers from reconstructed knee surgery, completed 18 of 31 passes for 227 yards and the touchdown to Garcon.

We could bring Kiffin back….he wanted Calvin Johnson….

  • Al_istheRaiders

good to see more people opening up their eyes….

  • Papertiger

    Sorry!

  • alex7

Porter, Sims, Woodson, Roach, Jennings, Houston, Burnett, Walker, Adams all on the cheap.

Seattle traded for a DT this year that they cut 2 weeks later. It happens.

  • DJ Johnny

I don’t ce anymore about our media “reputation” or how it looks to others when we make changes.

That presser by DA was nauseating. “We need to get better”.

    Really? No schytt?

THAT was a game that was given away…period.

I fing HATE Matt Flynn as QB.

Words cannot describe how much of a pos QB this loser is.

I’d rather see Kyle Boller in there.

If you as an offense go SCORELESS for 3 quarters in a make or break game like today…AT HOME ,against the WORST D in the league???

I don’t care how it looks. I would actually excited to have Sparano take over right now.

    DA IS A LOSER.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

How about the one on the blog?

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Opt

We were infected with endemic viruses It’s gone epidemic. Thanks, Cork.

  • EMRaiders

So do you guys agree that it’s looking like we might be in last place in the AFC W this season? I think the only team we can beat in our division right now might be SD. And that’s considering we split with them 1-1.

I really hope we get healthy quick and start making progress. Pryor is going to have to improve quickly for us to have a chance at beating KC and Den.

Actually, our Offense in general needs to step it up.

Moore is looking more and more like a pretty good WR, let’s hope he keeps improving. DMac I think has lost his mojo. Unless he finds it again, I think we are in the market for a RB next season. For now, we should try Reece more and more at that position and see what he can do there.

  • Al_istheRaiders

    Fire shrek now!!!!

  • David C. Moorman

West Bromwich at Old Trafford…at least the weekend wasn’t total waste!

  • Zopi

No dude. There’s only one, I’ve been posting under only name since back in the end zone days, which by the way props to the raiders end zone crew keeping it alive today.

  • Rico Stifler

Ben Tate wants a chance at starting. So anywhere where he can start is all he really wants. Pretty much the others would all be about money.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Bring back KIffin as the ball and let Sebass practice kicking him.

  • Rico Stifler

Also, Lovie Smith is a very respected coach amongst players. So i think that Smith aty HC would actually make some players want to play for us.

  • Back-N-Black

I’m off to watching the final show of Breaking Bad, one of the best TV shows ever made. Long live Heisenberg!

  • KoolKell

Don’t forget most in here thought Flynn was the answer.

    Now they’re piling on Reggie.

  • 0ak R8rs

Never idiot. Never been in the Flynn camp. Never took a side in that bullshlt. You’re too stupid and senile up remember. I know. It’s ok.

  • EMRaiders

I second that. Though I don’t think that would help Seabass accuracy right now either.

  • Papertiger

Agreed! I still don’t understand why Reggie didn’t address the pass rush early in the draft.

Also, that Tyler Wilson pick is looking worse now that it’s coupled with the Flynntastrophe.

Can Reggie scout QBs? It’s not easy, that’s for sure.

  • alex7

do love that fancy zone/man mix D looking better than anything Al put together the last 10 years.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Opt

If so, he can fend for himself.

  • NYCRaider

shame on me for thinking a contract year would motivate DMAC to play through minor injuries

  • Al_istheRaiders

    Fire reggie now!

  • Just Fire Baby

    Oh…..F Flynn.
I’ll put my face on that one

  • alex7

pretty sure we could have told you we were a last place team every month for the last 6 months =)

It’s a QB league and the Broncos, Chargers, and Chiefs’ are way better than ours.

Latavius Murray and a mid-round draft pick will be our new explosive RBs next year. Jennings our power back.

  • Jon Train

Reggie deserves more time. DA not so much. Believe it or not, this will be an attractive HC opening next year.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

This platform doesn’t work as well as the WordPress one when a lot of people post.

  • Al_istheRaiders

reggie brought this pox on the team…

  • David C. Moorman

Why he wasn’t traded 2 years ago is beyond me. Now the Raiders couldn’t get a Snickers bar for him.

  • alex7

what would you expect him to do? Throw his players under the bus Hue style? That worked out well for him.

  • EMRaiders

oh no, I knew. I was just holding out hope for Dmac, being a contract year and all… guess not though…

  • alex7

to the awesomeness of non-Davis zone D.

  • Papertiger

    NEW POST!!!

  • RaiderDirt

    DAMN!!! THAT ONE HURT….

TOTALLY GOT TO BLAME POST DMAC//REECE PLAYING PLAY EXECUTION ON OLSEN….

NOT DEFENDING FLYNN (he proved his worth, and it wasn’t much) AT ALL, BUT THE PLAY CALLING NEVER ADJUSTED AFTER THE HALF….

    I WAS AT THE GAME…

ARE RECEIVERS, GAVE FLYNN ZERO HELP WHEN HE WAS IN TROUBLE, YET AGAIN I BLAME OLSEN’S PLAY CALLING AND FLYNN’S ZERO AWARENESS FOR LINE & PLAYER ADJUSTMENTS PRE SNAP..

DMAC IS A WHIMP, CAN’T BELIEVE HE CLAIMS “ HE’S ABOUT THAT LIFE”

FLYNN IS A LIFETIME BACK UP/EXTRA POINT BALL HOLDER…

IF THIS DOESN’T TURN AROUND (SOON) …I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT….

DA & STAFF WILL BE REPLACED FOR 2014…

DAMN U SHOULD OF SEEN PRYOR SHOUTING AT THE RECEIVERS TO MAKE THERE CUTS FASTER & GIVE FLYNN A TARGET…

COACHES NEED TO COACH… ON THE FIELD , MAKE ADJUSTMENTS EVERY SNAP… NOT IN THE FILM ROOM AFTER THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME HAS ALREADY BEEN DECIDED!!!!

BOUT TO ENJOY THE REST OF MY TAILGATE DRANKS FOR THIS RIDE HOME..

ONE NATION… DAMN I’M TIRED.OF LOSING AND STARING OVER THOU…

  • Just Fire Baby

I would say trade everyone you can in the rebuild, but that isn’t fair to the assessment and development of TP.
    But McFadden has to go.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    ????
Most people in here wanted to play.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Opt

Most? Really? Do you read the posts? Or just kick your cat and call him a ‘Dumbazz’ for no reason. You old pootbutt.

  • Try Some Reality

    new post, goons

  • 24

So I gave in and bought Madden 25. It’s currently downloading. I figured I would just build the Raiders to my liking. I’m optimistic that I’ll have better results.

    My first move? Cutting Flynn…lol

  • Jon Train

And he deserves blame. But he has also done some positive things. DA has absolutely nothing to re-up his (2 year?) contract.

  • KoolKell

Jeezus Xhrist dude. Never seen you upset about nothin

  • DJ Johnny

Sick of DA’s b.s excuses and all the “we need to get better” b.s.

Sick of everything that loser says.

    “Listen…” blahblahahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah.

    No YOU LISTEN DA.

You SUCK. All we hear is freaking excuses from this loser.

    He’s not winner.

Team is a reflection of the HC.

    This team.and coach SUCK!

  • RealTruRaider

    lol

  • Raider_Riff

Where is Levi Damien right now? Answer: Eating humble pie with extra “Weak Sauce”.

  • RealTruRaider

    There is a long line

  • 0ak R8rs

Is this the first Raider game you’ve watched? These guys all play for DA. The lockerroom I solid. Flynn sucks. That’s not coaching. Player play. Or they don’t. DA has done nothing to get fired for this year. Until this game and Pryor being out we were on the edge of 2 and 2 and almost to respectability. Lose, and now we shoud fire the HC? Once again, brilliant.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Wake the fack up. The sky fell a long time ago.

  • alex7

    DJ

you’re surprised we aren’t good? Really?

  • alex7

lol, Pryor and his speed will be all-world fun for you because YOU control his accuracy and reads.

  • DJ Johnny

I’m venting big time cuz I deceived myself into believing this team might actually be decent.

    I was wrong.

I take no solace in the fact we are doing just as the media said we would.

I admit it’s my own dam fault for thinking we were something more than just another pos Raider team.

    Nothings changed.

  • 24

    I realize we’re 1-3…but…

We kept it close with the Colts.
    We beat the worst team…Jaguars.
We got beat by Denver but we’ve played them the best compared to other teams so far.
We lost to the Redskins today but we know why and it starts at QB.

What I’m getting at is this…we are better than 1-3. Sure, our record is what it is. There’s no denying that whatsoever but we have been competitive. We’re not the worst Raiders team ever. If we can manage to stay healthy, I think we can still turn this into a productive season. I said 6-10 originally. I’ll stick to that because we have a lot of growing to do but we’re certainly not as bad as our record indicates.

The future is brighter than you think. Add experience to this very young offense and add more money next year and I really think we’re going to be much improved. We’re losing games due to lack of depth, experience and talent on offense. The Defense is struggling because of it.
