Jack-of-all-trades Jennings a bright spot for Raiders on Sunday

OAKLAND – In a perfect world, Rashad Jennings doesn’t see much playing time for the Raiders. If he’s on the field a great deal, that signifies that a front-line player is injured.
Such was the case Sunday, when Jennings was called upon to fill in for running back Darren McFadden, who suffered a hamstring injury early in the first half of the Raiders 24-14 loss to the Washington Redskins.
“The quote that always sticks with me, and I always share with people is, ‘When opportunity presents itself, it’s too late to prepare for it,’ ” Jennings said. “So, you always got to see yourself as the guy.”
Jennings was “the guy” on several levels Sunday, standing out in a game in which the Raiders squandered a 14-0 lead, surrendered seven sacks and allowed a struggling Redskins team to get its first victory in four games.
He made his presence felt from the outset, before McFadden suffered his injury and Jennings touched the ball on offense for the first of 23 times.
Jennings burst through the line and blocked a Sav Rocca punt that teammate Jeremy Stewart recovered in the end zone for a Raiders touchdown.
“Ever since I met the cat, since (offseason) camp, all he does is show up and work,” left offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said. “Whatever role they ask him to do, he does it. So, that doesn’t surprise me at all.”
The Raiders signed Jennings this past offseason ostensibly as a replacement for running back Mike Goodson, who departed to the Jets via free agency.
In Jennings, they landed a veteran back that has the versatility to make a difference in several capacities. All of those were on display Sunday.
Several times Jennings came close to blocking Rocca’s punts. When he wasn’t playing special teams, Jennings was accounting for 116 of Oakland’s 298 yards offense.
He rushed 15 times for 45 yards and caught all eight passes thrown his way by Matt Flynn for 71 yards. By comparison, he touched the ball only nine times in Oakland’s first three games.
“He went in there and ran the ball hard,” coach Dennis Allen said. “He did an admirable job of filling in for McFadden.”
Allen preaches the next-man-up philosophy, meaning when someone goes down with injury, the backup has to be ready to perform on short notice.
Jennings grew accustomed to that role during his four seasons as the primary backup to Maurice Jones-Drew in Jacksonville.
“It’s the mentality that you should have,” Jennings said. “There aren’t any say, per se, backups in the NFL. Those are the guys that are at home. Wherever they put me … I’m going to do whatever I can to help us win a football game.”
He came close Sunday. Barnes said the Raiders are plenty confident with Jennings playing a prominent role in the offense.
“He may not have the household name of an Adrian Peterson or Darren, but he runs hard like them,” Barnes said. “I’ll play with that guy any day of the week.”

Allen threw Flynn under the bus saying he was the biggest reason we lost, Also would not promise he would still be the back-up. got this from nfl mobilely
Well, what he actually said was that Flynn didn’t play well at all.
That’s not throwing someone under the bus, that’s just telling the truth.

  • The Big Banana

Painfully obvious to all but the divisive trolls in here

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

So who’s gonna ask him about the “JaMarcus Russell Comeback Train?”

  • eastoaklandraider

Hue Jackson also told the truth and he was crucified.

  • Thec

I want to see flynn converted to Wr

  • The_Judge37

Like what else is there. The offense is getting worse, Defense isn’t doing much better. Our best players on both sides of the ball are still Davis draft picks.

Told the truth about what east?

  • i want to see him bagging groceries

  • Thec

Guy has ZERO fight in him. He is not a Raider

  • eastoaklandraider

    • a few seconds ago

I want to see flynn converted to Wr

Yeah, or how about scat back.

  • _Mista_

SeyGlen666 will not partake in this.

Based on yesterday, he might fumble them.

  • RediaR

Flynn has officially proven he sucks.

  • eastoaklandraider

Dammit this is no fun without the flynnettes.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

You can find good players at the check out line on occasion.

  • the discouraged dr robert

All passing stats are nearly identical for both quarterbacks and yet you guys want Flynn to be cut and you think Pryor is the future.

You say Flynn lost the game yesterday but you won’t admit Pryor lost the Colts game.

You want patients for prior but you refused to give the same for Flynn.

Flynn’s first game after a month of sitting the bench was far better than any of pryors first three games.

And Flynn has actually had big NFL games.

But you morons just don’t know what you are even looking at.

UR the Dennis Allen of fans.

  • eastoaklandraider

    about our lame DC

  • Thec

Same is still said about TP2 by some of these so called Raiders….

Lets be fair and get a nitpick breakdown from the said neck talkers….

  • marks hair

    haha dr stupid

  • eastoaklandraider

    And a flynnette shows up

  • Thec

Tell us all how we “win with flynn”…lol

  • So I am no longer the only one complaining about that trade now!

I want to make this clear, I was not wishing ill of Flynn at all. I was wholehearted pulling for the guy, want to win. I was pleading with him to win that game. It would give the entire team confidence but by the second qrtr I had had enough.
Well, I didn’t want him taken out in the first half but by the middle of the 3rd quarter I wanted Flynn gone and McGloin to come in, even though he’s a rookie, before I threw something at the tv.

  • JOn Wooah

Funniest comment yesterday “NOW WE CAN COMPETE” bahwhahaha

  • I wanna see Flynn be the ‘meet and greet’ guy at a walmart near you, anywhere u.s.a.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Didn’t you say we’d score 35 points a game with Flynn playing?

  • new post

  • marks hair

hes been here for a while cowering behind different handles

  • Then got in the bus and made sure it backed up over his limp body once or twice.

  • eastoaklandraider

Well let ME be clear, I wanted to see flynnch fail, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Now we can move on.

  • Yeah I was wondering where Duck has been?

  • the discouraged dr robert

    Stats can be very misleading.

    He wasn’t reading the defense.
He didn’t even see that defender on the interception.
And on the sacks it was like he had no clue what was going on.

  • Not sure why people have yet to figure that out.

  • the discouraged dr robert

    Over a blog? Idiot.

  • yeah he is probably a double I was guessing as well.

  • the discouraged dr robert

Bullsh1t. U don’t know Pryor would have done any better.

He never has. That’s just ur blind love.

It’s not just qb rating. It’s ALL passing. stats.

  • loyal

Time it takes to re-build a team; Colts 1-2 yrs, 49ers 2 yrs, Miami 2 yrs and my Oakland Raider 11yrs and counting.

  • So much for the elimination of multiple monikers. The Nurse has about 5 already…

Must be nice to be horrible at your job a still collect 6.5 million $. I can’t see Flynn being on the field in the NFL again….ever
He’s picked up $9 million since he left Green Bay, despite being dumped by Seattle, and has started what, two games?

  • Jon Train

As was I. I really didnt think he’d be THAT bad.

  • Jon Train

I’ve always thought he looks like Wynona Rider.

  • the discouraged dr robert

    Yes he struggled at times.

But he will get better and he’s already put up numbers as good as Pryor WITHOUT the starting backfield.

  • Mike_Trail

I love everything about Led Zeppelin…Greatest Rock and Roll band of all Time…Seen Page and Plant 3 times and each time was better than the last…Saw them play a blistering “Song Remains the Same” I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

  • Taiwan_Raiders

First of all, mention of ‘passing stats’ pretty much place you the ‘don’t-know-a-thing-about-nfl’ category. Individual stat are for individuals, not team. Lots of people here pay to watch the game, whether in stadium or one of those expensive cable packages. Stats are meaningless.
Second of all, a WIN is a collective effort from all three phase of a team, offense, defense, and special teams. From offense, we want to see moving the chain, get into scoring position, consistently. We can put up with one or two interception as long as TP can consistently mount a scoring drive. So far, we only see one bad game from TP, and that’s the Denver game. With Flynn, including the preseason, we saw nothing. One good drive per game won’t do it.
Third, nobody is appointing TP as the franchise QB yet. He might have a shot, but we want to see further progress. And that’s one thing TP has done; is that he’s making tons of progress.
Fourth, Flynn was brought in, at a much higher price tag than TP, and anointed as the starter, and not as a prospect. If Flynn can only produce the same performance as TP, which is still a prospect, why stay with Flynn and not give the prospect the chance to develop to something much better. Simple investment strategy.
Fifth, overall TP is the better QB for Raiders than Flynn, now already, not future. Yeah, his pass is not as accurate. But in terms of reading the defense, pocket awareness, mobility, and leadership, he far exceeds Flynn and more than make up for the deficiency of his accuracy..which Flynn isn’t that much better.

  • loyal

I have full faith in Pryor. Hope he is “the one” but…….. I don’t know if there is a team we can beat (Steelers/Giants) this year. Maybe if DA and RM had given TP a shot in the last 5 games of last yr, we would be better off now (and maybe Flynn would not be here).

  • bigmike34

    England Raider
I am sure it is great….a win, win for Flynn……… It Must be a little frustrating …having the Elbow hold him back as it did
both here and in Seattle….but he is a lucky guy …When he goes home on Sundays he will not be all beat up
And he is a Newlywed going home to the former Miss Louisiana a stunning looking young wife…
    How is your life going????
