It’s Pryor, then McGloin . . . Flynn No. 3

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 at 2:56 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are now paying their third string quarterback a guaranteed $6.5 million.

Coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday Matt McGloin would be the backup quarterback for Terrelle Pryor against the San Diego Chargers and not Matt Flynn. Pryor is free of symptoms from his concussion and will start against the Chargers Sunday night at O.co Coliseum.

“It hasn’t worked out like we anticipated and we’ve got to make decisions and we’ve got to move forward and continue to go,” Allen said. “Matt’s going to continue to battle and scratch and claw and I still believe that he’s a capable quarterback, but we’re going to give McGloin a chance.”

McGloin, an undrafted free agent, beat the odds once already with a Raider, winning the spot as the third quarterback over fourth-round pick Tyler Wilson. Now he’s supplanted Flynn, who was tentative and unsure in a 24-14 loss to the Washington Redskins while Pryor recovered from a concussion.

“I like what Matt brings to the table as far as his competitiveness, he’s got some moxie to him,” Allen said. “He just understands how to play the game and I don’t think it’s too big for him. I think he’ll come in and if he’s called upon to run the offense I think he’ll do a good job. He’s smart, he throws an accurate ball, he’s got good arm strength. He’s good in decision-making, so I like what this kid has to work with.”

Incorrect. We are on the hook for 6.5 mill no matter what… 2 mill of it dead money next year after he retires to boinkin his hot wife for a living.

  • Smitttstyles

    and if so?

  • Smitttstyles

We had a good, solid debate on the merits of Flynn and Pryor before the Washington game. You were insistent that if Flynn played poorly, you’d own up to the fact that you’d been wrong about him, and move on. You’ve done none of that. Any of the respect I may have gained for you during that discussion after your previous troll-like behaviour is out the window with your continuing denial of the actual facts at hand. You couldn’t refute facts the other day and solidly stood behind your opinion – your opinion, which was unsupported by facts, was proven wrong in spades. So who is the fraud here?

  • Smitttstyles

I take that bet in spades – guess what Sideshow Bob? Pryor still has that 65% completion rate with 7.7 ypa – still solid numbers. Flynn still fell on his face – and you still fail to own up to anything and continue to spout nonsense. I had such hopes for us and good football discussion after the other day – it’s all gone. Bet is on. If you win, I leave forever. If I win, you’re gone – or at least you eat crow in front of everyone and never mention the blasphemous idea of that pile of steam Flynn starting for this team ever again. I told you repeatedly that one amazing game against a historically bad defense in garbage time of the season is nothing to hang your hat on as a viable NFL QB – and he proved it in spades on Sunday. Too bad too; we really needed that game. I was hoping he’d play well – but felt he wouldn’t, and he didn’t.

“To obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad with your palm now.” Good one Davy….

  • the unclonable dr robert

That’s my impostor. He loves to say that stuff.

But flynn’s bad game was better than pryors first three.

  • rioderek

He’s even the back-up holder. Flynn is totally uesless.

  • rioderek

    I’ll take that bet !

  • rioderek

How can you not be convinced he’d be a better back-up than Flynn. VY had a good training camp in GB. Actualy better than Flynn’s and he’s more suitable as a back-up to Pryor due to their similar skill sets.

  • rioderek

DA is a terrible evaluator of talent. The guy is simply not HC material. The entire AFC west has decent coaches, while the Raiders have DA. Enough said.

  • rioderek

Gotta disagree with you. Reggie Mc has been nothing more than a junk collector. They guy seems to have a weak eye for talent. Most of his best selections were guys with little to know expectations. The guys he brought in with decent to large expectations were flops. He’s been fortunate a few of the late selections and undrafted types have exceeded expectations. Reggie Mc doesn’t seem to have a bulding plan. He’s failed to address obvious areas of concern for 2 consecutive years. The OL, pass rusher and quality back-up for oft-injured McFadden, have never been adequately prioritized.

Flynn does not deserve these attacks on him or his ability …
Facts….In the last and only game he has started in two years…Flynn was 21/32 for a 66% completion rate…Inspite of 7 Sacks from a almost non-existent Offensive line….he passed for 227 yards …with one TD and I INT….His QB rating was 83.7…that is better than 14 of the starting QBs in the NFL
On his second series Flynn drove us to a quick Passing TD of 18 Yards….our Special Teams scored with a blocked punt and we were up by 14 in the 1st quarter……After that our Offensive Coordinator went into a Prevent Offense…..Over and Over again going RUN RUN PASS In series after Series….
Flynn has been sensational in Two starts for GB….He is a deadly accurate passing QB and had he been give a decent chance to Pass he would put points on the board…
He does have a problem with an elbow that Has bercitus…It first occurred when he was slated to be the QB for Seattle…
This year he had the same problem Flare up in our 3rd Pre-Season Game….
The guy needs to be traded and the Raiders need to save a few million…We owe him about 6.5 million Dollars…there a more then a few NFL teams that need a QB …Who knows maybe we can get a Player for him …either way we will have to pay some of that Salary….
In his first two Starts with GB Flynn threw for over 700 Yards and 9 TDs….The guy can Play…
He has not been give a chance here to show what he can do so Trade him for Gods Sake

  • Bigmike34

What if we just shopped Flynn to try and get another player …we agree to pay his salary …and and try to get someone who can help our team
if that doesn’t work….Give him his money and let him walk….We can sure as heck use the Roster Spot…

  • Bigmike34

I have supported Allen in the Past….But he has proven himself to be a poor and indecisive Coach….One day he defends Flynn and his game The next
day he throws him under the buss and demotes him to the #3 spot…..with management like this ….no wonder we are in this hole that we
    may never get out of.
