Still no McFadden, though Reece looks better

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 at 11:59 am in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA — Running back Darren McFadden is nowhere to be seen on the practice field today. Rashad Jennings is the one taking all the reps with the first-team offense in case he is the one called upon against the San Diego Chargers.
McFadden left the game against the Washington Redskins after only five carries on Sunday. He suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the game and wasn’t able to make it past halftime.
On the bright side for the Raiders, fullback Marcel Reece (knee) looks as if the knee he injured against the Redskins isn’t bothering him too much, if at all.
Cornerback Charles Woodson returned to practice today after he missed Wednesday’s proceedings for what coach Dennis Allen termed a non-football reason.
Center Stefen Wisniewski is on the practice field today. However, he is just watching as his teammates go through their paces.
For now, Andre Gurode is the starting center as long as Wisniewski isn’t able to play. Lamar Mady is the backup in the middle.
Allen and the Raiders are hopeful that Wisniewski will heal well enough and in time to play against the Chargers.
Rookie Menelik Watson is taking reps at left offensive tackle today, with the second-team. Khalif Barnes still is the starter at that position.
Once Watson returns, it’s conceivable that he will push Barnes out of the left tackle spot, with Barnes moving either to right tackle or one of the guard spots.
Wide receiver Andre Holmes is practicing for the second straight day as he works his way back into form after a four-game suspension.
The Raiders have until Saturday afternoon to decide whether to activate Holmes to the 53-man, active roster. If so, they need to cut a player to make room.
If Allen opts to go without Holmes for the Chargers game, the Raiders have to make a roster move Monday if they intend to keep Holmes around, which is likely.

Especially for a Raider game, right? We get no love.

  • MaddenRaider

And, why is Jennings able to average just about the same yards per carry as McFadden behind the same line?

  • Prometheus

D Moore to the Pats for Ridley. works out of both teams

  • I AM RAIDER

3 game sample….same line..equals no holes.. a RB cant make a hole..but if there is one there..McFadden can do WAY more with it than Jennings…we are talking 2nd level of defense….
again..is he long term..im not sure anymore..but >Jennings..EASY and over time will show if he is on the field..this is a ridiculous discussion

  • Prometheus

you should go talk to Mark Davis about a coaching job.

  • Just Fire Baby

Interesting, always seemed better in print than TV.
Best of luck Monte, enjoyed our times together in Spring Training.

  • I AM RAIDER

you , I see, are STILL smoking that pipe!

  • Just Fire Baby

Because McFadden is about .3 % better than Jennings.
And less durable, and not as consistant a blitz pickup guy.

  • Prometheus

    thanks for the valuable input

  • MaddenRaider

    Me, or McFadden?

  • I AM RAIDER

    ditto

  • MaddenRaider

I agree, it is ridiculous. McFadden and Jennings average about the same yards per carry this year. I’d say whichever one just seems to be a better fit with our offense should get the start. No scholarships.

  • 10centsworth

ANYONE remember Reece starting at RB and HOW he did? Anyone?

  • Just Fire Baby

I gave Reggie a complete pass on all of last year. We could have went 1-15 and he deserved year two. And granted he still is dealing with some tough issues, so it’s not like it was a playoff or bust type thing this year.
But this is getting ridiculous. We are getting next to nothing from our top draft picks the last two years, he has botched the QB thingy two years in a row, DA doesn’t seem like any long-term solution, and his “big” contracts have mostly been duds.
I mean what has improved? The salary cap, penaltes and defense. But improved from what? Horse crap? Great we improved from horse crap.
I would like to strive for a tad more.

  • Prometheus

Pats have no WRs, raiders have no RBs, Dmoore would be Bradys deep threat. trade makes sense.

  • I AM RAIDER

you have ZERO facts about blitz pickup..just throwing out things to prove your INVALID point..McFadden since Arkansas has been praised for being tough nosed in pass protection… how soon we forget how good he was prior to the foot injury..maybe he isnt the same as he was….but he is still better than Rashard Jennings…and since you love YPC so much…Jennings last year????? a whopping 2.7

  • I AM RAIDER

yea for the PATS ..sure it does…you want to give them our best WR ..most productive and explosive…for a RB who has been benched for fumbling…man please..wake me when you say something right.

  • MaddenRaider

Pryor came within a yard of beating the Colts on the road, had the game taken out of his hands in a win vs. Jacksonville and put up a 112.4 rating in Denver on a Monday night, with no interceptions. Around 30 passes vs. Denver, I believe. Benched with a concussion in a loss to lowly Washington. I don’t know If I would call retaining Pryor “botching the QB situation”. We have a winnable game Sunday at home. Assuming we lose to the Cheifs the following week, we have Pittsburgh and Phily after that, 0-4 and 1-3 respectively. We could conceivably be 4-4 at the midway point. I think youre throwing in the towel too soon.

  • Prometheus

D Moore is NOT an elite WR a #2 at best. Raiders can draft his replacement EASILY next year. would be a good trade, ridley had 1200 yds last year more than mcFragile ever has

  • 10centsworth

If I may here. One telling point. Jennings is on the field suited up.

  • I AM RAIDER

thank you..some perspective..although if RM doesnt draft better next year…and/or keeps DA ..RM can go too!

  • KoolKell

To those thinking our offensive line suuuuuuuuuuuuucked out loud, I’d say most of the seven sacks given up were all on Flynn himself. Most of the time Flynn had adequate protection in what should be a ‘quick release passing’ game. For those who said Flynn held onto the ball too long… DING DING DING!! You get the prize, as we definitely watched the same game then.

Opinion subject to change with new evidence.
That’s how I roll, but for now, not impressed.

  • plunkhead

Its also called a foot long

  • Prometheus

you are very optimistic and thats a healthy outlook and if this teams wins more than 5 games i’ll consider that a positive too

  • Rico Stifler

Well, beginning next year, we can afford to strive for more cuz we will have the cap space to sign better, more reliable players. In terms of the draft, our highest pick from last year was a comp pick in the third round. So not much can realistically be expected out of that draft class. This year’s class has dealt with a dearth of injuries. Hayden and Watson missing like all offseason. Moore has been dealing with injuries since he was drafted. I’d say Wilson is the only one who has not performed to what was expected of him.

  • I AM RAIDER

it cripples our team for the rest of the year..ridley is not some great back who is going to come in behind this o line and put up 1200 yards…keep moore..fix o line then spend that pick on a #1 WR ..or DE. Moore aint goin nowhere!

  • Theghostronin79

Bergs, Hayden, Watson……..Can’t foresee injuries man. I know what you’re sayin but, even I can’t call those guys “Misses” yet. Especially Hayden and Watson through 1/4 season.

  • Just Fire Baby

Agreed, the average NFL game has each team with between 1 and 2 sacks.
So call it two as the norm. Those happen, but the rest…….
Flynn couldn’t get out of the way with the giant fork sticking out of his back.

  • Prometheus

ALL on Flynn? had nothing to with the fact that the skins KNEW the raiders had no run threat and just sent the house?

  • Just Fire Baby

A sup 3rd round pick and a standard 4th round pick should be doing something.
He drafted a 26 year old lineman for crying out loud!!!!!!! Dude is going to be like 30 when his rookie contract is up.

  • I AM RAIDER

no it didnt….LOOK AT THE GAME>. HE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO THROW

  • Rico Stifler

I don’t know if I’d keep Tarver. He struggled mightily last year but he is doing a lil better this year with a pretty much all new defense with 10 new starters. If the defense gets better as the season goes on, the new HC next year might keep him on. But that’s doubtful.

  • KoolKell

“Nope, it’s definitely Reggie McKenzie’s fault. Fire him today!!”
Seriously, you’re going to fire Reggie McKenzie when he finally has the cap situation working for us following this year? Listen folks, this may get ugly this year but I see a team that at least plays 60 minutes (granted they didn’t play well on offense with a statue for a QB behind a line missing three starters in Veldheer, Watson and Nix while Bergstrom is on the IR) so there isn’t a ‘full deck’ out there.

Pryor brings ‘ZIP’ to the Offense since he can run around and make plays. We’ll have our tackles back by mid-season (Watson may in fact return this week if not next) so let’s see how they’re playing after mid-season.

I still think we’re better than the Jets, Steelers, Chargers (despite their win this past Sunday) and Iggles. How about the Giants? Cowboys? We still could possibly win against those teams, so in my mind means we’ll win at least 5-6 more games. If so, I’m not going to fire Reggie… or Allen… this year. But if the same results show in 2014, THEN I’d have a ‘short hook ready’ for several…

  • Prometheus

marqise lee or watkins #5 overall pick next year. McFadden has no run vision, we all know that from last year. its not just the oline. this team isn’t going anywhere this year, moore isn’t a difference maker

  • Just Fire Baby

Flynn never even changed the snap count or cadence or anything.
By the 4th quarter the DE’s were breaking off the ball quicker than the tackles.
I understand Peyton is the gold standard at such, but plenty of QB’s can get the DE’s on their heels a little with all those pre-snap gyrations and fake audibles and leg kicks and all that.
    I mean, f, help a tackle out!!!!!
I think we would have won with Jamarcus playing. Seriously.

  • otomis

Time is up for McFadden. Trade him or release him. You cannot be considered an “elite” back when you are never in the game. If that is the case, I’M an elite back. Darren is always hurt and needs to go. That’s the way of the world. Nothing personal. Just like at your job, you don’t measure up? Good bye. DMc is not an elite back, he is a draw-back. Run DMC? Right.

  • 10centsworth

    Makes sense to me.

  • Prometheus

i know I;m wasting my time saying this here but it was Flynns first start in 2 years, 1st with OAK and 3rd career start overall. makes zero difference in my life personally but i just wanted to point that out

  • Rico Stifler

OL and DL actually seem to play long careers for some reason. I wasn’t happy about drafting Bergs cuz I wanted to draft Kirk Cousins. But Bergs was considered a ZBS fit and DA wanted to run the ZBS so RM took him to give his HC who he thought he wanted. And it was a comp pick, not a supp pick. Pryor is the only supp pick on our roster.

  • I AM RAIDER

you have a loser attitude..already saying we are going to pick #5? im glad you nor your mentality is running my team. Moore is a SOLID #2 receiver in this league..and the best we have right now….cant let him go..not for ridley

  • 10centsworth

hmmm, how’d he do his first two starts? He’s been in the league…how long? Curious logic. Especially for a back up QB.

  • Rico Stifler

Yeah, I am hoping we don’t re-sign him. If we do, it better not be more than the vet minimum. I am hoping to see us sign RB Ben Tate in FA and drafting De’Anthony Thomas as a complement. But I am also very intrigued to see what Murray can do. It’s a shame that he got IRed this year.

  • Just Fire Baby

Rust played a factor, and I am sure he would improve in some sense, but the baseline he created was just too damn low.
    That was flippin dreadful.

  • Just Fire Baby

That’s not the best sales pitch, lol.
Basically he trusted some dude to draft some guy, and then decided he didn’t trust dude 9 months later.

  • Just Fire Baby

I don’t think Thomas can bang in the NFL at RB. He will be a McCluster type, some spectacular plays, but certainly nothing special.

  • Rico Stifler

Yeah, but it happened cuz we have a terrible coach. I don’t think people realize how much who your HC is and what he wants to run on off/def actually affects who the GM drafts.

  • Rico Stifler

I actually think that Thomas could be more like Sproles than McCluster.

  • Rico Stifler

Also, the only other three RBs I like enough to draft are Sankey, Seastrunk and Carey.
