No Wiz as Raiders begin practice

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, October 4th, 2013 at 11:25 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders closed the media window at practice Friday with center Stefen Wisniewski not in attendance, raising the possibility the Raiders will have to make another significant shift on the offensive line against the San Diego Chargers.

Wisniewski, who injured his right knee against Washington, was in attendance during practices Wednesday and Thursday, with coach Dennis Allen expressing optimism he would play Sunday night at O.Co Coliseum.

If Wisniewski can’t play, then veteran Andre Gurode, a former Pro Bowl center with Dallas who has been playing left guard for the Raiders, would move to center.

That would leave left guard to Lucas Nix, who opened the season as the starter but eventually gave way to Gurode in part because of an ankle injury and in part because of ineffective play.

The Raiders have shuffled their offensive line since training camp, beginning with a torn left triceps by left tackle Jared Veldheer.

The initial plan was to have rookie Menelik Watson open the season at left tackle after a strong preseason finale against Seattle. Watson, however underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and just began to practice again.

Instead, the Raiders moved right tackle Khalif Barnes to left tackle and installed Tony Pashos, who was signed on Sept. 2, at right tackle.

Watson, who was getting some work on the right side Friday, expressed optimism Thursday about playing while Allen seems to proceeding with caution, given the fact he missed almost all of training camp with a calf injury and then had minor knee surgery.

Running back Darren McFadden was not present at practice and is expected to be declared out of the San Diego game following practice Friday.

Despite the late starting time Sunday night (8:35 p.m.) in order for O.co Coliseum to be reconfigured for football following two A’s playoff games, Allen has not adjusted practice times.

He said the Raiders will alter some of their meeting times, however.

I was going to tell you about the cortisone shots, the size of the needle, and the doctor’s note excusing me from kneeling. but now I won’t.

  • Raider_Riff

Because it doesnt suit their agenda. Whatever that is. I cant figure it out right now.

Why anyone would be hell bent on claiming that Peyton Manning’s OLine is worse than ours is beyond explanation.

  • the fantastic dr robert

    nix and brisiel aren’t starting?

and barnes and pashos are doing well. and gurode is a multiple pro-bowler.

  • 10centsworth

Glad you left that out. Also that the other memories are blocked. Don’t see a schrink.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Because he’s never started?

  • Goldie7

Yep, I called it about Manning being a serious threat when the Donkeys signed him. Big Red should have beefed up our team with intentions of defeating Martian head and his donkeys, but unfortunately he didn’t. I seriously think Manning had a little help with PEDs to help him improve from the several surgeries.

  • The_Judge37

Watson should’ve started, but I didn’t think he would’ve beat out Barnes right away.

  • the fantastic dr robert

u guys are desperately trying to pre-emptively excuse pryor’s poor play sunday.

it’s the line. the coaches. the org. inherent racism that he’s faced his entire life.

it’s a miracle he ever completes a pass with all that against him.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Bartenders included?

  • the fantastic dr robert

    wah, wah, wahhhhhhh.

    battleship sunk.

  • 10centsworth

better be a big tip, no pun intended.

  • Raider_Riff

Nix might not start. Still hurt.

    Briesel is hurt as well.

Barnes and Pashos are doing well. I never said they werent. But they arent our starters.

Bronco’s backup LT is doing well also. But somehow they have it worse than us. That is the current debate.

  • Theghostronin79

I think his “Draft Status” just thrust him into that expectation.

  • Just Fire Baby

    I responded earlier.
Manny Ramirez (starting center) did not play football in 2010. Broncos brought him in off the streets in 2011.
Chris Clark, drafted by Tampa, cut, lands on Minny PS half-way through year, never gets off PS, waived, Bronco’s pick him up.

    Disagree.Watson was a projected starter
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Projected by whom?
The guy was a project, a gamble by McKenzie.
It may turn out great, it may not but he had all of three semesters playing football experience at the college level with one of those being at Junior College.
He played well as LT in the pre-season against Seattle but let’s not go thinking that he’s Art Shell before he’s played a game in a regular season..

  • the fantastic dr robert

so, i wanna get this straight:

pryor is a god-like superhero that singlehandedly electrifies the team and makes us unstoppable.

    BUT:

due to racism, conspiracies, and pop-warner level surrounding players, he is to be applauded and excused for every gaffe due to his remarkable ability to “manage” losses and throw 2 td passes for every 3 games.

    yes. i see it now.

  • Goldie7

    Huh? How am I alienated?

  • Just Fire Baby

How are they not the starters? They have started every game.
So in this theory, Terelle Pryor is not the “starter” but Matt Flynn is?

  • 10centsworth

You said you had to be “protective”. Didn’t want to offend you or your good taste and loyalty. All that stuff.

  • ROASTBEEFRAIDER707

This is the 4th starting o line in 5 games!!! Or is it the 5th??? Anywho, Name another team who’s going through this and having success. We’ve got the worst o line issues in the league!!! Even if they were healthy, there’s no guarantee they would be good!!! But this certainly will not help!!!

  • the fantastic dr robert

    zing!

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    The USS Pootbutt?

  • lefty12

Who said he was Art Shell?I just said he was a projected starter. He started the last practice game and the coaches were happy with his play.If he hadn’t gotten hurt he would have started.

  • 10centsworth

Gee, you’d think that would qualify.

  • the fantastic dr robert

nix and brisiel are in line to start, and they are and were starters. barnes has always been a starter, this year and last, and pashos has started every game.

  • Just Fire Baby

I’d rather have Peyton Manning and you can figure the rest out, that’s my point.
Bronco’s have lost just as many “starters” as us, and they could lose another 3 or 4.
    Won’t matter.
Pass protection will be much better Sunday night for us, whoever the hell is in there.
    Because of the QB.

  • HGDaddy
  • the fantastic dr robert

sooooooooo, the OL is being used as a pre-excuse for pryor,

    BUT,

flynn should have excelled. without reece and dmc.

    yes, i see it now.

  • 10centsworth

I can see his HOF speech. “Thank you, thank you, thank you. Altho pushed to 3 touches a game I responded with the help of my coaches…Wait. My mom first. Then there’s Suzie that rides the pole down at the Bitter End.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

The coaches were happy with his play against scrubs, not starters.
That means that they’re encouraged that he’s got potential. He probably does, but you’d have to be crazy to project a guy as a starting tackle in the NFL who has never played a game in the NFL and has only played 3 semesters of football at the college level.

  • Raider_Riff

    So two guys? Two!

And Ramirez wasnt just pulled of the street yesterday. He’s been there for 3 years now?

I guess Chris Clark is the only PS guy that is starting in the league huh? We dont have any PS guys starting?

Chris Clark was getting first team reps all offseason. Played well in the preseason. But you didnt know that did you.

    I rest my case.

  • The_Judge37

He would’ve started because of the injury to Veldheer and the failure of Alex Barron. But had the enitre line been healthy, he likely would’nt have beaten Barnes for RT.

  • plunkhead

    new post

  • the fantastic dr robert

ok, i’m out til tonite. beware the impostor!

  • Theghostronin79

    Seriousness about Pryor……
I think his ceiling is HIGH. If you honestly haven’t seen improvement from one game to the next, then your “Pryor Sux” argument would weigh more.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Well. Barnes hasn’t been much of a RT. In his defense, he’s supposed to be a LT.

  • Raider_Riff

Please, tell me again how the donkeys have a worse OLine than us.

Or do you want to keep changing the subject?

None of our current starters would be starting if our OLine was healthy. Briesel is the only one and that was only cause we couldnt find a replacement. Damn ur dense sometimes.

  • Goldie7

No offense taken 10centsworth, none taken at all. I just wanted to step in, because sometime I agree with some of things you post from time to time.

  • 10centsworth

Just a message in a bottle.

  • Just Fire Baby

1st team reps ahead of Ryan Clady?
    Link? Source?

  • lefty12

If he would have been healthy for all of camp and the 4 practice games,i believe the org. projected him as a starter. However there is no way of knowing that for sure, just MO.

  • Raider_Riff

Clady was hurt most of the offseason.

Thats why people in the know knew that the donkeys LT situation wasnt in bad shape when Clady went down. Was it a downgrade? Certainly. But were they putting in a guy that wasnt ready? Not at all.

Clark could not have been in a better position to fill in for Clady.

  • the fantastic dr robert

i have seen improvement. i’m shocked he’s done as well as he has.

but his ceiling is LOW. it would be amazing if he ever reached top 20.

yes, that’s better than i expected, but to me, he has no real upside.

  • 10centsworth

I love some of the dialogue on here. Love it, I’m laughing. “What I said is true,. Look it up.” “I did, couldn’t find anything.” “You’re an idiot.”

  • Raider_Riff

And being that Pryor has done better than you expected, you admittedly have no business evaluating QBs.

  • 10centsworth

hmmmm, guess you can’t give an inch in this place.

  • the fantastic dr robert

    No. He was a 1, now he’s a 2 on a scale of 1-10.

He still sucks but not quite as horrifically.

  • Raider_Riff

    Not at all.

I never thought our OLine was any good when healthy. I thought they’d be Flynn’s undoing. I thought Pryor would have to compensate for the OLine sucking.

Crappy starters. Slightly worse backups. Now we are starting our PS guys possibly. I dont think it really changes things for Pryor. If I thought that, I would have thought Palmer was worth keeping.

But as far as excuses, it does give our inept running game a good excuse though.

  • Raider_Riff

Ok. Fan expectations are one thing.

    But coaches should know better.

DMC never was a everydown back. Never should have been expected to be one.

  • 10centsworth

I voted down on that myself. I like McFadden, wish he’d worked out. Now? he’s in the way, we can’t afford him anymore.
