Raiders promote Cornell from practice squad

With offensive tackles Tony Pashos an Menelik Watson both questionable to face the San Diego Chargers because of injuries, the Raiders promoted James Cornell from the practice squad Saturday to the 53-man roster.

Pashos, who has started all four games at right tackle, was limited all week with a groin strain. Watson was back at practice after missing a month following arthroscopic knee surgery.

The other tackle on the roster is Matt McCants, who has played primarily as an extra blocker in some power packages.

Cornell, waived by the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 25, was signed to the Raiders practice squad on Sept. 11. In college at Illinois, Cornell played in 29 games with 19 starts. He was undrafted and spent all last season on the Ravens practice squad.

To make room for Cornell, the Raiders waived guard Antoine McClain, who was claimed off waivers on Sept. 1 but was inactive all four games.

Reece SHOULD be an RB2 but they don’t use him.i can see OAK getting 1 long TD drive and hopefully they pound the ball in with jennings.

  • the fiendish dr robert

Reece has actually done ok in points when he got the ball due to the Tds.

They did mention him getting touches as a halfback. I am hopeful he basically takes over the position tomorrow.

    And never gives it up.

  • Prometheus

yeah I think Reece should be the primary back with Jennings OR McFragile backing him up., but olson must know something i don’t know.

  • Downhomedude

As long as we don’t sell the farm, I’d take Freeman as an ace in the hole… It really can’t hurt.

When Al Davis died….the Raiders died.

  • rioderek

There own channel ? What channel is that ?

  • rioderek

You’re right. I was watching Donaldson in the clutch and he was very undisciplined. Over swinging and chasing bad balls. Hopefully the guys will focus on just playing within themselves vs. trying to be a post season stand-out. The team seems to be pressing. Not Nails Gray but the hitters.

  • rioderek

They also need to try running when they can. Rattle the pitchers, force the issue. I think the A’s kill themselves in the post season waiting for things to happen, over being creative and/or making things happen.

Al Davis had a hushed conversation with a well-dressed man at the intersection of Highway 61 and 49 a few decades ago.

Then, like a carton of spoiled milk, Al lived well past his due date. Finally, the gentleman came calling and drug him off.

It feels like we Raider fans have been watering, weeding, and fertilizing a field forever but nothing ever grows. We are Carthage.

A city of 124,000 could be the next home for the Oakland Raiders.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, owner Mark Davis recently toured the Concord Naval Weapons Station on Friday as the potential location for a new stadium.

“He made no commitments, but my feeling, he liked the looks of the property,” Concord Mayor Dan Helix said.

The 5,000-acre facility has been decommissioned and is being cleaned up.

The proximity of the site to the Concord BART line caught the owner’s attention, since 30 percent of the team’s fans use the local subway system to get to the team’s games.

Davis has said he wants to build a new stadium that would hold roughly 58,000. Oakland is believed to be the first choice, but not much progress has been made. The Raiders also are believed to be a candidate to return to Los Angeles.

    Beat the chokers…

  • Que

Morning RaiderFam, Its gonna be fun to see what this team can do tonight with so much adversity. I like the game and still feel we could win quite a few games still. Its krazy but when you look at it, we should have and could have. The team still fighting to prove all sports media that WE AREN’T THE WORST TEAM IN NFL. Keep growing boys every week.

Report: Raiders have “definite interest” in Freeman

Posted by Mike Florio on October 6, 2013, 9:19 AM EDT
    Getty Images

We’ve been keeping an eye on the Raiders when it comes to Josh Freeman,
for a variety of reasons. First, the current regime has whiffed twice
on quarterback acquisitions. Second, Raiders offensive coordinator Greg
Olson recently has raved about Freeman; the two men worked together for three years in Tampa. Third, it feels like a Raiders thing to do.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Raiders indeed have a “definite interest” in Freeman.

It’s unclear when or how (or if) the Raiders would make their move.
They play late tonight (11:35 p.m. ET), and then travel to Kansas City
on Sunday. The bye week comes after that, which would give Freeman two
weeks to get ready to contribute.

The most obvious question regarding Freeman and the Raiders is
whether Freeman wants to be a member of the team. With the Broncos,
Chiefs, and Chargers in the division, Freeman most likely won’t have
anything to tell his former head coach to stick in his trophy case at
the end of the 2013 season.

Then comes the question of whether it would be a one-year arrangement
or a multi-year deal. The Raiders don’t really have the cap room to
give Freeman a big-money contract. And Freeman’s leverage right now
isn’t as high as it could be in January.

And what about Terrelle Pryor? He has become a fan favorite, but the team is only 1-3. Would he be benched, traded, or cut if Freeman comes to town?

Whether Pryor or Matt Flynn (who has $6.5 million guaranteed this year) or Matt McGloin, someone presumably would have to go if Freeman arrives.

  • willy91137

there are lots of rumors were the Raiders will play nothing happens few years back I heard Mark and Amy Trask were looking at Parks out in Dublin now they’re looking at the Naval weapons Station in Concord and of course Los Angeles and

  • willy91137

regime might be a little gun shy of bringing in another quarterback he’s got for now I don’t think he needs another one Fiynn of started my lesson

Anyone see the RIP Lennay Kakua sign they are going to put up in the black hole today?
    LMAO

  • Zopi

Unfortunately, the Raiders defense is not up to par to hold off the Whisenhunt offense. The dolts’ defense is somewhat suspect, so I expect a shootout even with the patched up Raiders OL, however, experience and Donnie Woodhead will eventually cover the 5 point spread. Take the dolts plus the points and the over 46.

    Raiders 41 .. Nuevo Tijuana 20
It was hard to believe we could rattle Manningstein but we know we can rattle Felicia rivers. Big games from Raider defense and TP.

  • Just Fire Baby

Mort is saying Freeman is basically looking at us and Minnesota.
And also that the Titans contacted Jafatso to gauge his interest but he is still rehabbing an injury.
    Intresting.

  • Just Fire Baby

Clowney already thinking of the draft and opting out of games.
I want nothing to do with this dude. He will probably get some sacks in the NFL, but the lights were shining bright on him this year and he is running like a cockroach.

  • plunkhead

Signing Freeman is the same as saying TP will never be good enough, worse then that you are saying TP will never be as good as Freeman who is not very good at all.
Get some WR who can run, catch and fight. Get a Run game and TP and or others will look much better.

  • nolimits3333

    Plus his name is Clowney.

  • Que

I think some of us really aren’t looking at the big picture of thee oakland raiders. Once carson wasn’t brought back , what else could they have done. There wasn’t anything left out there and I’ve watched football along time and remember teams wasting Much more for a QB than what we gave for flynn. I think some of us just haven’t wanted to see Reggie and Company are doing a decent job with what they have and IT’s A Process! It really is, you have to let things fall in place and we land in the draft where we belong and you draft. Some of us hold Reggie to this rediculous standard and this wasn’t a JOB everyone wanted in its condition at the time. Now cap has been cleaned and draft picks are there, many will want the job that Reggie and company Toughed Through. You have to look at all avenues to rebuild this team and win as many games as possible to keep your job and people excited. Honestly I still want to draft that Franchise Qb and get some linemen. Go raiders forever

  • plunkhead

It does not  me. I had a funny feeling he was not what he was built up to be.
Get playmakers, get line help, and go after our Cutler type QB.

  • Just Fire Baby

These “Extra points” scrolling along the bottom of ESPN are awesome.
For instance, VIck is holding onto the ball in the pocket, longer than any other QB in the NFL.
Richardson is avergaing 2.9 ypc in Indy, all other rushes by a RB are averaging over 6.
I think the Browns f’d up drating Richardson, but completely snookered the Colts getting a 1st out of him. He is the definition of average.

  • Just Fire Baby

The real tip will be if they sign him, what do they sign him to.
A one year deal, and it is a free looksie, maybe play him the last week or two to see how he develops with the staff.
If they give him a few years, then you can figure that out.

  • plunkhead

The last thing we need is another big failure at QB and our track record is less then desireable

  • Just Fire Baby

    Playoffs

  • 0tt0

how do you figure that…its just making the position stronger……in case anyone doesnt know it yet flynn is out….that leves almost no experience at the position and the starter we have plays somewhat reckless and is going to get killed,,,,,,,when you can get a qb like freeman without giving up any picks you take a shot

  • plunkhead

If he signs a one year deal with us, that will confirm the drug/head issues in my eyes.

  • plunkhead

I may be wrong. That’s just the feeling I would have if I was in the clubhouse. Bad vibes bringing him in. Might as well let TP go after the year is up.

  • Just Fire Baby

There is absolutely no way the NFL leader in INT’s since 2011, who has 14 turnovers in his last 6 games, with no training camp and who won’t have played in about a month, helps this team in any way shape or form in 2013.

  • plunkhead

Dam Straight! Here is something else to throw out there. The NFL has a huge security force and they use Investigaters or inhouse personel to keep an eye on players especially superstars. I am not saying they watch everyone, however when they hear rumors they confirm or dismiss them. So every owner has a good idea what Freeman’s issues are if any.

  • 0tt0

reggie has done a terrible job so far……he has put together a terrible coaching staff, he has gotten beat on every trade he made, his FA’s have been terrible and the jury is stiil out on his draft picks but its safe to say no one came in and became a stud….there mat be some marginally decent talent……..i would say that pretty low performance from the gM position

  • Just Fire Baby

100% correct, and the media these days have cops, bellmen, strippers and others that are “Sources” that get paid a spiff.
It all isn’t 100% accurat, but they aren’t unfounded either.

  • 0tt0

think that has more to do with the coaching staff and the system they installed there……Im not saying he should come in and be the starter….but he is better than flynn

  • Just Fire Baby

Upgrading your 3rd string QB in the middle of the season has absolutely zero upside to me.

And spare me the “System” talk, a rookie with zero starts played exactly the same.

And Freeman is completing 45% of his passes this year. Worse than Tebow.

He just isn’t very good, and not worth the distraction, AT THIS TIME in the season, IMO.

  • 0tt0

why…TP is so weak he cant handle competition……I think he already proved he can……..we cannot sit by and hope TP becomes a good QB….you gotta keep building the depth….never have too many QBs…..still hoping mccloin and wilson pan out

  • 0tt0

upgrading any position any time of the year is the name of the game

  • plunkhead

True and owners overlook most drinking drugging issues. Its been going on since day one in the NFL and life in general. Just don’t sell drugs or murders your homies

  • Just Fire Baby

Mark browsing around Concord yesterday at the Naval yard.
Could we have the Concord Raiders vs Santa Clara 49ers soon enough?

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

No, it’s not the same–it’s following the principle of competition, something this new coach and RM promised would occur under their new regime. Besides, TP says he loved to compete, so competition should help him improve.
Further, we don’t know at all that TP will ever develop into a passer or a good long-term qb–too early for that.
I’m not saying I want to go out and get Freeman because like everyone else on this board, I don’t know what happened in Miami. Heard them say on ESPN this morning that when he worked with him in Miami, our OC thought Freeman could develop into another Rothlesburger. Again, I wouldn’t have any way of knowing that.
There are a lot of guy on his board who are always saying our staff has to “coach up” the players. If they believe that and if the problem with Freeman is not simply that he’s an a-hole, then maybe he had successful seasons with the Dolphins when he was getting “coached up.” I don’t know. I suspect there are those with the real inside info on what’s going on and it might not be what you think.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

    Man, would I love this!

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Hmmmm. Are you saying the Raiders are horse thieves?

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

I’d love them out here in CCC, but I’ve always believe that absent the Jack London area for the A’s, Contra Costa County would be a great place for the ball team–always great warm weather for summer baseball at night. BART and highways available.–lots of hills around and the ability to plant trees for a great look.
Warm weather in a great site with a really nice park, and a good team sells MLB tickets.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Yeah, me too as long as the price is right. I’d expect, though, that it would be next year’s camp that determined the QB. (I guess that’s because I can’t quite figure out how much we’re going to be able to gauge Pryor as long as the O-line and receivers are not at least “B” grade.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

The guy, much as I love him, runs to upright to be a regular back. He’s a jack of all trades and it takes a better offensive team right now than the one we have to incorporate him into the offense for the maximum benefit. I don’t think that Tarver is lacking in imagination as much as he’s holding back some things because of the O-line, the inexperience of TP, and the early belief that DMac would be fine. Sure wish we could pick up some small, tough, fast kid like Sprouls. I think the small, hard to see guy has a huge upside in today’s NFL.
