Raiders promote Cornell from practice squad

With offensive tackles Tony Pashos an Menelik Watson both questionable to face the San Diego Chargers because of injuries, the Raiders promoted James Cornell from the practice squad Saturday to the 53-man roster.

Pashos, who has started all four games at right tackle, was limited all week with a groin strain. Watson was back at practice after missing a month following arthroscopic knee surgery.

The other tackle on the roster is Matt McCants, who has played primarily as an extra blocker in some power packages.

Cornell, waived by the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 25, was signed to the Raiders practice squad on Sept. 11. In college at Illinois, Cornell played in 29 games with 19 starts. He was undrafted and spent all last season on the Ravens practice squad.

To make room for Cornell, the Raiders waived guard Antoine McClain, who was claimed off waivers on Sept. 1 but was inactive all four games.

I agree. I would take the UCLA guy over him.

As far as Josh Freeman, @MikeSilver is right – if Freeman signs w/ #Raiders it’s because he was told he could start over Terrelle Pryor soon

    Vic Tafur‏@VicTafur36m

The #Raiders have also been looking at a site in the Dublin area, but Chronicle was told it’s already spoken for in another development.

That must be the reason that Mark was in Contra Costa Co.

  • Papertiger

Doesn’t Kelly have an 18 month show-cause penalty? No way he can go back to NCAA, right?

    Way ahead of you.

  • _Mista_

They took Nnamdi and he is soft and overrated. Seymour would be dead weight on their d-line so I hope they do. Too bad we cant send them SeaPerch for a draft pick..

  • MistaBrown

we need Freeman to show these guys how to cash a check seaperch is old

  • Just Fire Baby

I think I got you by a nose, lol

  • Just Fire Baby

Might be right, good luck with that PHilly

  • Just Fire Baby

Seems like Flynn is a goner for sure though.
What a disaster that was. And for anyone that says rah-rah leadership doesn’t matter at a QB, I give you Matt Flynn.
He isn’t that untalented, but he is a giant puzzy.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Not if Gruden wants to keep him as OC

  • jumpnjiminy

I want to throw this question out there to some of the older fogies…anyone remember the days when on second down and one to go, the team would throw a long bomb? These days and I’ve kept (mental) track teams run the ball like 99.5% of the time…don’t know why but it bothers me….

  • RelentlessIV

Yes he is a scurry cat. I feel bad for everyone who wanted Flynn to start. This Freeman situation is wild. He scary inaccurate when going deep and I think his passer rating is somewhere in the 40’s.

like you can talk you have used over 30 screen names

45% completion this year, worse than Tim Tebow.

  • Raider Rick

Carr ?? really? maybe its a genius smokescreen created by freckles and tits…..Mark’s got Gruden on speed dial..” So Jon, about that Team president position I was talkin to you about…”

  • Just Fire Baby

Jaquars draft Eugene Monroe 8 overall, trade him for peanuts.
Draft Joeckel, he is getting carted off the field.
    Great job Jaguars!!!!

  • Papertiger

Yeah, 2nd and short was always supposed to be a passing down. I remember Fouts would bring it up when Norv was starting out in SD.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

    No he is untalented.

    Giordano 82 yard pick 6.
That’s one more TD than Mike Huff

No matter where Freeman lands, we’ve learned the Raiders aren’t nearly as high on Pryor as their fans.

If these morons do this, you might as well black out the whole third deck.

  • Just Fire Baby

He is a mid-round pick struggling to complete passes down the field.
And has already logged a concussion.
It is what it is. He will still get plenty of games to prove himself.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

As to Oakland, Glazer said that coach Dennis Allen spoke to Freeman by phone on Friday, and that Freeman would walk right in as the starter. (Which likely is news to Terrelle Pryor.)

Then I’ll join in with Hunter & “Fire Reggie now”

Hell, just keep the black hole and lower levels available for the public. At least the visitors can buy all the tickets behind their bench.

    Thanks for the link Plunk.
That East Bay location could work for the Raiders.

Since it’s a former military weapons site they’ve probably left all kinds of toxic crap in the ground but what the hell , since there is sewage comin up into the locker rooms now, that would be an improvement.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Gruden would be HC and would name his GM. Not my ideal situation, but if these morons go with Freeman over TP, what more needs to be done…Nice picture, BTW

  • Raider Rick

Nice AVI…yours is blurry though..lol…Yupp stab in the heart to TP but if he messes up Freeman is waitin in the wings….Gruden has unfinished business in OAK he would coach w a chip on his shoulder. Who knows …The Concord Raiders??

  • Raider Rick

Freeman to Holmes…..TOUCHDOOOOWN RAAAAIDDERSSS……….sounds good huh??

  • plunkhead

That’s why I say the Raiders have evaluated TP. They know what they have. And they cant bet all their horses on maybe or what if. Chances are they want someone else. I just hope it is not Freeman

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Freeman is rumored to have drug problems, and “allegedly” there are rumors this guy would rather party than put in the time to be a QB like Pryor has. I’m not opposed to signing the guy, but it’s hilarious to think that Denise & Grimmace are dumb enough to sign this guy & then give him the starting job right away.

    Vic Tafur‏@VicTafur12m

#Raiders & Vikings front-runners for Josh Freeman. #49ers Bills & Packers reached out, per Silver and Glazer, but Freeman wants to start.

  • Raider_Riff

Carr brings a veteran presence to the film room for the QBs. He’s a good locker room guy. Perfect match to assist TP2.

Is Carr worth anything on the field? Not any more than McGloin to be honest. But that isnt why he’d be considered (if indeed they are legitimately considering him, for all we know it is a smokescreen in the Freeman negotiations).

As for Freeman, he wants to be a starter or at least given a shot at starting. Legitimate sources have stated that our interest in him is “mild at best”. Lots of lame media sources are claiming otherwise.

I was inclined to believe that we werent really considering Freeman until the Carr rumors fired up. The smokescreen angle makes it look like we are after Freeman.

So I dont know what to believe.

But I do know this, Im tired of the org disrespecting TP2. First Leinart, then Flynn, now Freeman (a guy with leadership concerns and a likely drug habit). This reminds me of when Kerry Collins was brought in to backup Gannon but in the back of our minds we all knew that Al couldnt wait to push Gannon out the door.

For Pryor fans, we have to take solace in knowing that Mark Davis is a known Pryor fan like us. And Reggie already has whiffed a few times on QBs so he may be gun shy. So Pryor isnt going to get pushed to the side easily. Mark will ensure that (I hope).

Otherwise it’s career suicide for Reggie and DA. And I will have no sympathy for them.

Pryor is the first guy in the building and the last guy out. Meanwhile Freeman has been the opposite in Tampa. If they are considering him as a backup, fine. If they are giving him a shot at the starting role, fire Reggie & DA yesterday because they are seriously hopeless fvcktards if they think Freeman will rehab this franchise.

I dont care if Pryor’s throwing is suspect. Their are craploads of QBs with great mechanics that come and go year in and year out in this league. But guys with leadership/work ethic intangibles are the guys that stick around and have success.

Freeman doesnt want to be a backup. He doesnt want to be the hardest working player on the team. Bring him in and starting having him split reps with Pryor if you want to see a fan riot at the Coliseum. Only this time, the boo’s wont be for Flynn, they will be for Reggie. And Mark will be listening loud and clear.

It wouldn’t be a step forward…sideways at best and a another dumb QB move by McKenzie.

  • John David Booty

Let’s see, Pryor snatched the starting QB job from the anointed starter Flynn, Freeman was replaced by a rookie. Pryor has already played MUCH better than Freeman this season, with far less offensive help. If DA already offered Freeman a starting job, he needs to be open-handed slapped in the mouth.

I’d rather sign Carr as a backup than Freeman as a starter.

  • Try Some Reality

    Well said, Riff.

  • Raider_Riff

I’d also rather sign Carr as a backup than Freeman as a backup.

TP has more to learn/gain from Carr as a backup than Freeman.

Carr is a known quality guy in this role. See Eli and the Giants for proof.

McKenzie’s got a thing for signing quarterbacks who lost their job to a rookie.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Well said…also this comment from PFT says it best.

    labiator says:Oct 6, 2013 1:24 PM

If the report about Oakland is accurate…. it seems to me that Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen continue to risk alienating a fan base that Mark Davis so desperately needs to retain/expand?

Why the hell would you guarantee a guy a starting position anyway? Pryor has the full support of his teammates, he is multi-dimensional, he has passion for the game and works harder than anyone, and his passing accuracy appears to be getting better each week.

Makes no sense. Next thing I expect them to do is sign McFadden to a multi-year extension w/ loads of guaranteed money.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

I personally don’t believe Denise is that stupid. And I would think Grimmace is a little more cautious after the Flynn debacle.

  • Just Fire Baby

I have my doubts about Pryor long-term, but I have more doubts about Freeman in the short-term.

  • Raider_Riff

    It’s mind boggling really….

    Ritchie likes Pryor

    Al liked Pryor

    Palmer likes Pryor

    Papa likes Pryor

    Eric Allen likes Pryor

    Tressel likes Pryor

    Peter King likes Pryor

    Lorenzo likes Pryor

    Heath Evans likes Pryor

    Bill Polian likes Pryor

    Kurt Warner likes Pryor

And yet we as fans are still unconvinced on whether our GM and HC actually believe in the kid. What is wrong with this picture?

  • Papertiger

    NEW POST!!!!

  • R8dercain

    You are correct.

But if they bring Freeman in then sit him an give TP the rest of the yr an see what he’s got.
If he doesn’t pan out (which I hope he does btw) then you got Freeman an MC gloin an next yrs draft pick.
    Manziel hopefully.

  • Raider_Riff

    We hope.

But the reports hint to otherwise.

I cant believe Reggie/DA are about to make Hunter S Thompson look like a prophet. Ive wanted so desperately for this front office to shut up the haters.

  • Raider_Riff

    Perfectly said.
