Flynn released after only five games — updated

ALAMEDA — The Raiders cut quarterback Matt Flynn on Monday after only five games.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen in his weekly news conference said, “I don’t know exactly what the reason was, why it didn’t work. It just didn’t work.
“Terrelle (Pryor) came in and he took over the job. He’s earned the position that he’s in. So, we just felt like it’s probably best to move on from that.”
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie traded for Flynn in the offseason, on the same day that he traded away proven starting quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals.
McKenzie acquired Flynn with the expectation that Flynn would be the unquestioned starter, even though Flynn started only two games during his first five NFL seasons.
That never materialized. Third-year player Pryor beat out Flynn by the end of training camp, and he solidified his standing with impressive play in his first three starts combined with a disastrous outing by Flynn in relief of an injured Pryor against the Washington Redskins.
“This kid’s going to continue to improve,” Allen said of Pryor. “He’s probably leaps and bounds ahead of where we thought he would be at this point in time. The key for him is he continues to work and continues to strive to get better on the little things.”
Undrafted free agent Matt McGloin is the only other quarterback on the Raiders 53-man roster. Allen said it’s conceivable that the Raiders will promote Tyler Wilson from the practice squad.
Also, the Raiders worked out veteran David Carr on Monday, so it’s possible that they will sign him for his veteran presence.
McKenzie restructured Flynn’s contract soon after he consummated the trade with the Seattle Seahawks. The new deal called for Flynn to receive $6.5 million guaranteed this season.
The Raiders agreed to give the Seahawks a fifth-round draft pick in 2014 and an unconditional selection in the 2015 NFL draft. Overall, Flynn earned $14.5 million the past two seasons, even though he got beat out for starting jobs with the Seahawks and Raiders.
Flynn was unavailable for comment.
The Raiders activated wide receiver Andre Holmes from the suspended list and placed him on their 53-man roster. Holmes filled the vacancy created by the release of Flynn.
Holmes was suspended the first four regular-season games for his violation of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

One bad trade in two years. Not the end of the world.

  • The Big Banana

Perhaps not, but you’re a certified moron. That we can all be sure of.

  • SnBG

What about all the other crap he drafted. Shut up.

    Open wide. Insert foot.

I like this move, it lets me know that Mckenzie is man enough to admit he made a mistake and now we can focus on moving DMAC…

In regards to his bosses courting Freeman and whether it fueled him Sunday night, Pryor didn’t say much. He acknowledged he heard about the Raiders’ interest, but little else.

“I heard some of it, and at the end of the day I really can’t control what I can’t control,” Pryor said. “Whatever happens happens. I’ll still come to work. No one’s going to work harder than me. I try not to focus on things I can’t control. That’s it on that one.”

    see there?

i dont think pryor likes being treated that way by his own coach.

get allen out of here please

  • RealTruRaider

Great day to be a Raider fan eh……well unless you are the Doc, Alexis, Bush, etc………..

  • the pryor fan dr robert

ur a moron. go away boy.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

    ur getting creepy.

  • Raider_Riff

    Why not Flynn?

    He’s a top 10 QB right?

Surely someone will pick him up and start him right away cause they see the same things you do right?

  • JLofty

Antipasto is a plate of cured meats and finger type pickled veggies. Not chopped….

  • Davy Jones

Building on Mistic- I do think that it’s worth noting that the players who truly excelled in last night’s game were Al picks = Pryor, Houston, D Moore, Reece. (Maybe Al and RMac can share credit for Woodson, LOL.) Not trying to take anything away from RMac, just think that Al took/takes a lot of hits as a talent evaluator and deserves a shout out here.

  • SnBG

Not hardly Jerry. Shut up. JR was the absolute worst

  • kenchun24

Javon Walker was the WORST! Took him in FF that year…did he even catch a pass that year? DeAngelo was bad too…Russell…ugh…everytime I see Calvin catch a TD pass or Peterson break tackles and score TD’s – SMH..oh well past is past. Later Flynn, maybe head back to LSU. Get a job with the Tigers or something.

  • Raider_Riff

Says the guy who is a Flynn fan.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

You’re leaving out Streater, Jennings, Butler (with a key reception late), Hayden (whose end-zone INT helped seal the win)….

  • SnBG

    What are their contracts Rock?

  • Just Win Baby

There must be something in Flynn’s behavior that contributed to this. To eat the 6.5 mil and just give him the boot?

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

“The” world? The world doesn’t care. Then their is McKenzie’s world. That’s a different question and he needs to show something this year.
He only had two successes in his first year but to be fair the place was a mess.

  • Raider_Riff

Tell us again how great your evaluation skills are….

Flynn is a top 10 qb in your eyes. Who is going to pick up your diamond in the rough?

  • the pryor fan dr robert

yeah. he did something to pizz DA off.

    everything points to it.

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

That’s because you’re still bummed about getting beat in the American Revolution

  • Al_istheRaiders

but we can never question shrek….

  • the pryor fan dr robert

    lol.

  • RealTruRaider

Would of been, but Reggies Guaranteed him 6.5 this year, he was only guaranteed 2 or so before that “great restructure”

  • SnBG

It’s a credit to this staff that they are getting these Al picks to play and that they are holding on to them for now. Al sure couldn’t get anyone to play for the Raids.

  • JLofty

Never hurts to stock the roster with talent. Esp at QB. You saw what happened when he got banged up. We tossed a salad against Wash.
Besides Pryor appears to have mental toughness. Another QB on the roster isn’t going to put him off his game….

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Remeber that Vegas trip? Man…………..

  • Raider_Riff

nope. But what I as getting is lots of “thumbs up” with every post I clown you with.

  • Davy Jones

Those are the RMac players, and I do think the Al list trumps them for last night’s game. Again, not trying to take away from RMac, giving a shout out to our dear departed Al.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

why? i’m happy pryor has improved. hopeful.

  • Al_istheRaiders

    what did jennings do?

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

    Hey Emeril, check the menu.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

just imagine how good pryor will be when he actually has a chance to drop back and set up in the pocket with out having dodge defenders at every snap.

When watson and veldeer get back the offense will be far better

  • Raider_Riff

    You are hopeful he fails.

    Nothing has changed.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

lol. good for u. print it out and put it on ur fridge.

    LMFAO. thumbs up. classic.

  • Davy Jones

That thing was flinching. P*ssed me off too.

  • raider_39

by Flynn. swung an missed. guys like him, middle-of-the-pack pocket-passers, can only function behind really solid OLs anymore, and only if they were in the same system for a long time knowing it inside out (my explanation of Flynns two incredible games in GB).

game’s making a leap with defenses gearing up for more athletic QBs let alone the natural improved thereoff. thats why i dont see Freeman having any success in MIN, on a side note. hes just a middle class PP imo. who could still develope

and since we dont have a Luck, Brady or a Manning, the top-tier of the the so called pocket-passers, im glad we have a physically superior (i still cant believe how he stiif-armed J Johnson, a 270 pnd grown assed man), dedicated, improving young QB like TP under these circumstances.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

He didn’t say Flynn was the worst, he said it “ranks” up there with them.

  • Raider_Riff

Ya, he brought you onto our blog. Flynns first mistake.

  • kenchun24

Cam Newton starting to look like one of those QB’s that will put up numbers (good or bad) and looks like a stud on Sunday (big, strong arm, can move the chains make plays with his feet) but can’t get the wins…think his record in games decided by 7 points or less is like 2-14 or something.

  • SnBG

They are working on ot RR, be patient.

  • Raider_Riff

Flynn’s behavior spawned Dr Roberta. That’ll get anyone cut.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

I don’t know. I’m sure at least 1 of those guys would have accepted vet minimum and outplayed Matt Flynn. then you save draft picks

  • the pryor fan dr robert

lol. love it. i own u.

  • Raider O

You know it. Beating Mich the discharged are a high priority.
    Damn you Mich.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    Why?
His play on the football field was more than enough.
