Flynn released after only five games — updated

ALAMEDA — The Raiders cut quarterback Matt Flynn on Monday after only five games.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen in his weekly news conference said, “I don’t know exactly what the reason was, why it didn’t work. It just didn’t work.
“Terrelle (Pryor) came in and he took over the job. He’s earned the position that he’s in. So, we just felt like it’s probably best to move on from that.”
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie traded for Flynn in the offseason, on the same day that he traded away proven starting quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals.
McKenzie acquired Flynn with the expectation that Flynn would be the unquestioned starter, even though Flynn started only two games during his first five NFL seasons.
That never materialized. Third-year player Pryor beat out Flynn by the end of training camp, and he solidified his standing with impressive play in his first three starts combined with a disastrous outing by Flynn in relief of an injured Pryor against the Washington Redskins.
“This kid’s going to continue to improve,” Allen said of Pryor. “He’s probably leaps and bounds ahead of where we thought he would be at this point in time. The key for him is he continues to work and continues to strive to get better on the little things.”
Undrafted free agent Matt McGloin is the only other quarterback on the Raiders 53-man roster. Allen said it’s conceivable that the Raiders will promote Tyler Wilson from the practice squad.
Also, the Raiders worked out veteran David Carr on Monday, so it’s possible that they will sign him for his veteran presence.
McKenzie restructured Flynn’s contract soon after he consummated the trade with the Seattle Seahawks. The new deal called for Flynn to receive $6.5 million guaranteed this season.
The Raiders agreed to give the Seahawks a fifth-round draft pick in 2014 and an unconditional selection in the 2015 NFL draft. Overall, Flynn earned $14.5 million the past two seasons, even though he got beat out for starting jobs with the Seahawks and Raiders.
Flynn was unavailable for comment.
The Raiders activated wide receiver Andre Holmes from the suspended list and placed him on their 53-man roster. Holmes filled the vacancy created by the release of Flynn.
Holmes was suspended the first four regular-season games for his violation of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

    my words last night.

  • kenchun24

Well yeah that was scary…in spite of his no-show with the Raiders didn’t like hearing that story for a Raider player.

  • RediaR

If Pryor had had the same career with the Bills you would not have had the same assessment of his skills.

  • Raider56

I can’t beleive the stiff arms either. Gansta that’s all I can say

  • Theghostronin79

I won’t be looking for Veldheer to return this year. Torn triceps are a big deal…..Anyway, if he rehabs the right way, he’ll be rusty as HELL too. How long to get back into football shape? It’s practically another offseason for him.

  • kenchun24

A’s hangin’ tough in Rock City 6-3,top of the 8th.

  • Raider_Riff

Youre like your boy Flynn. A embarrassment to all.

What are you going to do with yourself when we sign a QB that is black but is named White?

  • RealTruRaider

Difference is they have been saying this the last few weeks, you have been fighting it

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Ran for a solid 4 yards/carry when DMac did his annual “ACK! SOMEONE COUGHED ON ME! I CAN’T PLAY FOR THE NEXT MONTH!” shtick.

  • Raider_Riff

    Sure thing liar.

  • SnBG

Watson will be good, Hayden is coming around, Sio is OK for now but needs to improve. Good picks. Revera and Kasa will be good. Bergs may still be good , we don’t know. What are you guys talking about, bad picks. I say Reg is doing OK.

  • Raider Al from Atlanta, Ga

No Sir. I have never been to Oakland. My family is afraid to let me attend a game in the Blackhole. They know, I will never come back to Atlanta. I have been a Raider fan since 1975. George Atkinson and Hewitt Dixon played their college ball in Atlanta at Morehouse college and Morris Brown college. I have been a Raider fan every since. Thank God for USA Today, ESPN and the internet.

  • Jojo

Al was Jewish, hardly white…ask the Head Klansman net time at your meeting.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

now that qb and first pick in the draft are out of the question what do the raiders do come april?

i say get some more pass rush

  • Raider56

Don’t forget Jano’s clutch field goal – another Al pick

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

    Either a pass-rusher or a big, fast, sure-handed wideout.

  • raider_39

Newton is the closest thing to TP, or vice versa, but from a distance, it seems like we have the more willing guy, the better teammate and positive character, leader and all….

  • Al_istheRaiders

    oh thats it?

  • kenchun24

Of all the young guns…Luck is super stud IMO. Has a bit of everything…Manning drive and smarts to be great. Brady clutch ability on final drives, can break tackles and good speed to scramble for conversions/TDs. Luck was as good as advertised. Plus he’s not a douche lol

  • RealTruRaider

You do realize Jennings went out with the same injury right???

  • the pryor fan dr robert

    no. i’ve been noting it.

i said immediately after game 1 that he had shocked me with his sudden improvement in the short stuff.

    it came out of nowhere.

i noted his gradual improvement, but also pointed to his still sub-par overall results.

until last week, when he seemed to do well in “garbage time”.

this week, it was a great 1st half, followed by a poor 2nd half.

but i have continually posted that just improving to “marginally ok” was more than i’d ever seen, given his horrendous passing in the past.

last night was a near miracle.

  • SnBG

Our D came in with a swagger.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

i’m hoping for him over carr.

u just like to say “racism” instead of responding to what i actually say.

    ur a child.

  • kenchun24

Fair point…the combo of both is starting to show positives no doubt.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

    idiotic.

  • RaidingTexas

Yeah, if there’s a Megatron-type prospect next April, you have to go that direction.

Although the Raiders may be drafting too low to take someone like that.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

they are there for all to see.

man, don’t u have anything else to do?

  • william banks

T.P.= The Phuture of The Raiders.

  • raider_39

TP is huge, man. was watching som interviews and was struck with how big his hands are…along with his ears lol

  • the pryor fan dr robert

depends on reece, but there isn’t a highly rated rb at this time.

  • R8derdiehard

Flynattics wher you at lmao!!! Pryor progressing every game lets hope it stays that way same with the team one nation baby

  • RealTruRaider

Your post says it all, not sure how you say you disagree with me, but in same post you prove my point lol

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

And yet, they STILL won yesterday and are 3-2 in a division that includes Seattle and the whiners.
    End of story.

  • raider_39

said it in the prev thread. as of today, i would take Luck over anybody in the NFL…that guy is dangerous

  • RealTruRaider

Yes they are and its not pretty, do you really want us digging them up??? I highly doubt that

  • Raider_Riff

So is racism. You should try to let go of your hate.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Really like to see to some movement on the contracts with Veldheer and Houston.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

    do what u like.

i posted last night about throwing my support behind pryor, due to his rating, even though i still have doubts.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

    there is none, gay stalker.

  • loyal

Pryor has what Jamarcus and R. McClain do not. Work ethic.Pryor has worked his backside off to get better. Yes Jamarcus lost some weight recently but that’s because his money must be running out. I love TP’s work ethic and attitude.

  • Raider_Riff

Says the guy who wont own up to his Flynn-top-10 evaluation “skills”.

This is so much fun reminding you what a idiot you are.

  • Davy Jones

You say you’ve “been noting it”? I say your acknowledgement of Pryor’s improvement “came out of nowhere.”

  • Davy Jones

You DO know that you were the absolute last human being on earth to see it, don’t you? The clowns in the media were on it several games before you.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

glad u have fun so easily.

flynn was a 90+ rated passer and it’s easy to know that a 90+ rated passer is top ten.

    see pryor now, doofus.

  • SnBG

RR how much are those QBs contracts you wanted over Flynn. Hasselback was on a 3 yr 20 mil deal.
