Flynn released after only five games — updated

ALAMEDA — The Raiders cut quarterback Matt Flynn on Monday after only five games.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen in his weekly news conference said, “I don’t know exactly what the reason was, why it didn’t work. It just didn’t work.
“Terrelle (Pryor) came in and he took over the job. He’s earned the position that he’s in. So, we just felt like it’s probably best to move on from that.”
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie traded for Flynn in the offseason, on the same day that he traded away proven starting quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals.
McKenzie acquired Flynn with the expectation that Flynn would be the unquestioned starter, even though Flynn started only two games during his first five NFL seasons.
That never materialized. Third-year player Pryor beat out Flynn by the end of training camp, and he solidified his standing with impressive play in his first three starts combined with a disastrous outing by Flynn in relief of an injured Pryor against the Washington Redskins.
“This kid’s going to continue to improve,” Allen said of Pryor. “He’s probably leaps and bounds ahead of where we thought he would be at this point in time. The key for him is he continues to work and continues to strive to get better on the little things.”
Undrafted free agent Matt McGloin is the only other quarterback on the Raiders 53-man roster. Allen said it’s conceivable that the Raiders will promote Tyler Wilson from the practice squad.
Also, the Raiders worked out veteran David Carr on Monday, so it’s possible that they will sign him for his veteran presence.
McKenzie restructured Flynn’s contract soon after he consummated the trade with the Seattle Seahawks. The new deal called for Flynn to receive $6.5 million guaranteed this season.
The Raiders agreed to give the Seahawks a fifth-round draft pick in 2014 and an unconditional selection in the 2015 NFL draft. Overall, Flynn earned $14.5 million the past two seasons, even though he got beat out for starting jobs with the Seahawks and Raiders.
Flynn was unavailable for comment.
The Raiders activated wide receiver Andre Holmes from the suspended list and placed him on their 53-man roster. Holmes filled the vacancy created by the release of Flynn.
Holmes was suspended the first four regular-season games for his violation of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Flynn trade: Seattle receives Oak’s 5th-round pick in 2014. The 2015 conditional pick (also 5th rd) is voided b/c Flynn not on ’15 roster.

    “doubts”?

You have “hopes”. That he fails. Nothing more.

Have fun rooting for Flynn. You’ll be the lone idiot at his retirement speech.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

i noted his improvement in the short game and his excellent running.

i also noted his poor mechanics, poor deep throws, and freak-out picks.

    he saved u guys.

    good for him.

Pryor has what Jamarcus and R. McClain do not. Work ethic.Pryor has worked his backside off to get better. Yes Jamarcus lost some weight recently but that’s because his money must be running out. I love TP’s work ethic and attitude.see more10

  • Raider_Riff

what you meant to say was…

“depends on race, but there isn’t a highly rated qb at this time.”

    You dont fool us.

  • Davy Jones

Saved us, screwed you. Double good!

  • the pryor fan dr robert

i don’t swing my opinions wildly.

flynn is still a good passer.

the Pryor Brigade are still a bunch of loonies. they had love before it was merited.

    pryor saved them.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

It was never multiple picks was it?
It was just a 5th and a conditional one in 2015 which is what Trotter says.
What picks are you talking about.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

screwed me? i’m a raiders fan, so i’m happy we might have a legit qb.

  • SnBG

  • the pryor fan dr robert

i never said that. probably my gay impostor.

  • scinfidel

    anthony barr or marquis lee…

  • Davy Jones

Whatever Pryor ‘saved’ us from- and I suppose that is being wrong about him being an NFL QB- you WEREN’T saved from by Matt Flynn. If Pryor saved us, Flynn screwed you. Work on diagnostics, Doc.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

i’m happy we may have a good qb.

    that’s what i wanted.

  • Davy Jones

More like Flynn screwed you. A QB evaluator you are not, Bob.

  • the pryor fan dr robert

there is a reason teams like flynn and a reason why so many nfl people are shocked by pryor’s improvement.

    i’m like them.

  • Davy Jones

Correction: NFL people were shocked by Pryor’s improvement . . . in week one. You are literally the LAST man on the bandwagon, and even then only half on- God forbid Pryor should have a bad game, your response is utterly predictable. Oh, and BTW- there is no Flynn bandwagon. Own it.

  • kenchun24

Manziels bail out target Mike Evans has been great…but he doesn’t have the speed. Still scouts like him for his jumpball and outright size at WR.

  • Raider Rocker

I disagree. If the professionals with the Raiders and their training staff thought this was true they never would have put him Veldy on the designated to return list.

  • JonGrand

Alright, fellas, let’s stop waisting time berating people who were wrong about Pryor . Most of the media and Pryor’s own coaches had it wrong. Most are surprised by Pryor’s improvement. And with that said, defenses usually catch-up to mediocre qbs. What makes me hopeful about Pryor is that he’s obsessed with getting better. He has a Kobe Bryant-like work ethic. That’s exciting.

  • OhioRaider

I was wrong. If they keep winning I’ll be happy to have been wrong.

    Fire OhioRaider!

  • Blackholepriest

People are so shocked over TP’s improvement and I guess it’s warranted but I expected it. I didn’t know he would get it done quite this fast but I knew he would get it done.
TP has always had this in him he just needed tweeking. He was Vogt far off this if he corrected one or two flaws which caused all his issues. He was leaning to the left when he released the football and needed compact his delivery. And add proper footwork. It was as if he needed a whole new throwing motion just clean it up.
What he needed was too watch himself on film and correct himself then make it become natural………….period

  • OldCharon

What is that warm feeling? Like a distant train headlight coming down a long tunnel. Something I haven’t felt in 11 years. Is that… hope? Its been missing for so long I forgot what it felt like.

  • nolimits3333

    Actually you did say that.

  • nolimits3333

Captain Checkdown was never a good passer.

  • Jojo

Flynn = Ty Detmer + System QB’s that have a technical grasp and efficiency in PRACTICE SITUATIONS….Pine Riders.

  • ArtilleryShell

Where my old Raider Nation bloggers at!?! Terrelle Pryor is playing and improving better than most of us hoped. He has shown me he in our next great QB. We need a healthy offensive line, some tweaking of the run play designs and draft some linebackers and a DE to compete with anybody (except maybe Payton)

  • Justin Miramontes

They beat up on Pryor for no good reason for 2 years so it’s only justice if we continue to remind them of their ignorant and ultimately dead wrong predictions about Pryor for at least the remainder of this season. The media can actually learn from this. This is good for them.

  • BleedBlackNSilver

Sweet Jesus Flynn is gone! I’m sipping from a huge cup of silver and black kool-aid!
