Raiders fill vacancy on 53-man roster

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, October 9th, 2013 at 11:06 am in Oakland Raiders.

Rather than add a third quarterback, the Raiders signed veteran defensive tackle Daniel Muir to their 53-man, active roster Wednesday.
This comes on the heels of the Raiders working out 13 players Tuesday, with none of those being Muir. Three of the 13 players worked out are quarterbacks — David Carr, Trent Edwards and Pat White.
It seemed logical that the Raiders would use the roster spot on a quarterback after they released veteran quarterback Matt Flynn on Monday.
For now, though, the Raiders are moving forward with Terrelle Pryor and undrafted rookie Matt McGloin as the only quarterbacks on their active roster. Rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson is on the team’s practice squad.
Muir, 30, played in 46 games for the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets during his first six NFL seasons. He started 26 of those games.
The Raiders also re-signed offensive tackle Jack Cornell and placed him on their practice squad.

You realize that Sunday against the Chargers was the first time we have dressed 3 QBs all year, and we only did it a few times last year as well. NO ONE dresses 3 QBs for a game anymore.

  • Raider O

That makes no sense to me.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    But in your heart?

  • 10centsworth

I got nothing against christians if they aren’t machine gunning indigenous. Leave it at the parking lot gate…ok?

  • DKnight007

Nah. The dude is a beast! His rib injury was legit.

  • Raider Rocker

Some teams traditionally only carry two. See New England.

  • bcz24

This wasn’t that good a read… the guy said Reece is nothing more than a power blocker. Our Dline can’t stop the run? Our LB’s don’t make plays? LoL

  • JLofty

But one would then have the opportunity to (re)sell it I would imagine. Seems f’d up to say the least…

  • The_Judge37

Reality is we have TWO Qb’s. Wilson is on the Practice squad and if an injury to both qb’s happen during a game, we’re Fk’d.

  • CVRaider

Ok i see your point, but he moved to LA where there is a big Raider following. Could have chosen St. Louis, Baltimore, Tennessee like other teams eventually did. Then he came back to Oakland. He wanted a new stadium. He never got one and now look at the mess they are in. But all along he stayed on the west where the fans are and said fk no to London.

  • 10centsworth

You’re #2, P. Bush the Blue Blood with the Texas accent is #1.

  • Oaktown Raiders

Our makeshift line will be tested more than ever this Sunday. Dontari Poe disrupts every play. Nix, Gurode, and/or Brisiel will have no choice but to double team.. allowing Derrick Johnson most likely to light up that gap. Barnes against Hali.. Pashos on Houston.. Containment on TP will be huge in their scheme against us, and they’ll succeed. We will lose this game in the trenches. We go over the top and Eric Berry having a pro bowl season.. but Flowers has been suspect every time we head into Arrowhead. We win in the air. Or this 6 win streak will be dismantled.

WHAT’S A ROUND TRIP TICKET TO LONDON COST THESE DAYS ?

  • 10centsworth

Gee. I can see the scalpers outside the Coliseum while the game is played in London. I miss something here?

  • 10centsworth

    Train? Cheap.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

hali houston and poe are the reason they are 5-0 in my opinion.

they will dominate our o line.

this is where the game will be won or lost, and im having trouble seeing oaklands mixed and matched group being able to take the weight

  • R8erEduc8er

Mistic and yes Beech Dawg gets my vote for most colorful/entertaining posts lol.

  • The_Judge37

I question if we really nee Muir that bad? With the way we Run Pryor plus the weak Oline, plus the concussion protocol, there’s a legit chance we could need a 3rd QB. Should’ve promoted wilson

  • hwnrdr

Funny is that I was thinking the same thing…since we will already have tickets…I’ve never been to London…could be interesting!

  • Oaktown Raiders

13 teams in the NFL have two quarterbacks. That’s not even close to a neccesity. And I like Mcgloin. He played in Penn State so he’s established. A scrapper as well..

  • DIRT-LOT FOOTBALL

HOW WAS UR TRIP HOME BUDDY ?? WILL BE GOOD TO FINALY SEE U AT THE STEELER GAME..

  • 10centsworth

Knowing nothing about McGloin, I read the article/interview on the Raider site. I get the sense this is a squared up, tough hombre that will do what it takes. It’s not like this guy came out of Podunk U. Its big news about that hobo being demoted, but the coaches had no hesitation making McG #2.

  • hwnrdr

It was good…too short like always! But yes, a little over two weeks! I can’t wait to get back to the lot!

  • DKnight007

That si why mis direction and quick screens, play action roll outs/bootlegs, reverses, ghost motion will be key for the offense. I also think they need to run some power zone run plays and attack Houston or Hali on the edge and run it with Reece or Jennings in power. Get DMC involved in screens and use Ford. Use DMC on a wheel routes.

  • The_Judge37

Yeah but do those 13 teams have a Makeshift line of 2nd and 3rd stringers and Run their starting QB out of Power I formations?

  • RealTruRaider

    Brown???

  • bcz24

Do you know how many times we have dressed 3 QBs for a game in DA’s whole tenure? MAYBE 6 times. It doesn’t happen anymore bro.

  • Theghostronin79

So the PUP list is for 8 weeks right? Does that include a bye week?
If that’s all the case, then Burris could be playing against Pitt…
cork said he was running really hard on an adjacent field.

  • RealTruRaider

It is far from unheard of, teams only carry 2 QB’s all the time

  • RealTruRaider

    *1 week

  • 10centsworth

    Over/Under?
    One week and six minutes.

  • RealTruRaider

lol, he won’t last past the #2 overall pick, let alone the 2nd rd

  • 10centsworth

    Tell it like it is.

  • RealTruRaider

And dress 3 QB’s for the game??? Teams rarely do that, heck some teams only carry 2 QB’s on the roster the whole season

  • Oaktown Raiders

Exactly. But watching last weeks game and seeing the Titan’s rally.. They’re beatable. Fitzpatrick and his 4.8 speed was gaining yards on them.. However, TP’s legs will keep the D honest and not let him run all over the field. TP needs to improv more than any of the past five games. Explode the scene early and just sit on a lead the same way we did against the Bolts.

THIS JUST IN: Santa Clara police file 3 felony charges of possession of assault weapons against 49ers LB Aldon Smith.

  • JLofty

    I guess re-hab and “getting one’s head straight” isn’t going so good….

  • 10centsworth

Sit on the lead> Really? Stop. Hone that defense/offense, get some pride units going, pad those stats…KICK THEIR BUTTS.

  • The Big Banana

Pryor haters looking more foolish and more foolish each time he steps onto the field.

  • 10centsworth

Put ‘em in your rear view mirror.

  • bcz24

A player who finishes the preseason still on the PUP list can then be placed on the regular-season PUP list. Such players must sit out the first six games their team plays. At that point, teams have a three-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing; from the day the player begins practicing, teams have an additional three-week window in which to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster. If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season

  • Oaktown Raiders

Probelm with those plays is they only work against an undisciplined defense. And that is simply not KC. They are fast on the edge. Fast in the secondary. Near perfect angle pursuits, they’ll be on top of all that. Our best bet is the deep ball. Spread their 3-4 set, then hit em in the mouth with Jennings and DMC, achieve both aspects of the offensive side of the ball, so Bob Sutton won’t know what to expect. Either way, this games gonna be won on defense.

  • bcz24

Whoa. Isn’t Cali 3 strikes your out?? Meaning if Aldon is convicted of all 3 he would spend the rest of his life in prison???

  • bcz24

If his season continues the way it has I can see him falling out of the top 10… not out of the first round though.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Don’t think it works that way on a single arrest. Fortunately, haven’t had to ponder it much.

  • DKnight007

What a lowlife Smith is. Next step for him would be to murder someone….A Hernandez style. Smith should be suspended by the NFL for the rest of the season at least and released by the Whiners immediately.

  • DKnight007

We need Burris to comeback to make the D more complete

  • bcz24

You mean hit them with Reece and Stewart….

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Even if DMac isn’t really ready to go despite practice, he might distract ‘em for a few plays before we pull him out.

  • Oaktown Raiders

I don’t know about you, but our makeshift line has done fine thus far. Pryor’s concussion was his fault not the lines.. Better than the Raven’s who have an established line of starter’s. “Makeshift” means nothing if it’s working.
