Pryor almost wound up with Steelers

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, October 24th, 2013 at 12:45 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor grew up in Pennsylvania and a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he wanted nothing to do with the Steelers once he reached the NFL.
Pryor told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who first met Pryor when Pryor was a teen-ager, offered to select Pryor in the NFL’s supplemental draft in 2011.
Ultimately, the Raiders used a third-round pick on Pryor in that draft. That means the Steelers had two shots at taking Pryor before he went to the Raiders.
“(Tomlin) said, ‘Hey, I’ll draft you if you want to play here,’ ” Pryor said. “But he gave me a story about when he was down in Tampa Bay, about a quarterback (Shaun King) that was there, and he ended up being in the same hometown. It was just hard for him; he ended up cutting out because of all the distractions. . . .
“I had to say no because, at a young age, I didn’t want to be near home and have distractions around me.”
Pryor grew up in Jeanette, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh. He also bolted town after a stellar high school career, accepting a scholarship to attend Ohio State, when he had his pick of colleges, including home-state hotbeds such as Penn State and Pitt.

  • Goldie7

You are alright in my book TP2! There are a lot of Raiders fans here in PA (can you believe that?). Superb post Cork, good looking out!

Terrelle Pryor isn’t a fan of Shaun King, eh? (LOL – good news!)

  • the electrifying dr robert

    Missdick won’t like that.

  • DutchRaid

So what is your prediction for Chiefs/Browns game with the mighty Jason Campbell starting?

  • Nick Gancayco

Guy with those kinda measurables is worth a look when u need pass rush help. Could have just needed a change of scenery. Get him motivatd again. It happens. Hope it works out

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Soup won’t have any particular problems with that D.

  • Breaking_Black

Is Raiders/Dolphins the first matchup of classic NFL franchises in London?

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Sounds like he was a scholarship player who was kept on the final roster to avoid embarrassment at cutting a third-rounder. But getting caught with the cheeba forced the issues. Couldn’t very well cut the two other guys and keep him.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Unless the Steelers were willing to use a first or second-rounder on Pryor, we would have gotten him anyway.

  • DutchRaid

Think it was QB or WR? B/c there have been a lot of Steeler WRs who were originally QBs…

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

    Probably wideout.

  • 10centsworth

Finally we are gonna have 100 meter dashes without honkies. Great.

Mark Purdy wrote a column on the 1970s Raiders/Steelers rivalry. I have not seen one comment about it. Perhaps it is because he talks about ATTITUDE. What it is, what it meant…on the football field. You guys know what that is, right? Well, some do.

Goldie, I know no one my age that HATES the Steelers. This is young, foolish talk. We respected the 70′s Steelers like no other team we faced. Loved it…absolutely wallowed in self flagellating JOY when they played each other, especially in Oakland. There was nothing to match it before…or since. And this was shared by ALL football fans of that era. So, hating the Steelers? That’s like saying you hate foot ball.

  • 10centsworth

Your problem. You think its a slogan. Around here, you’re right.

  • Papertiger

Look, just because your mother is a nickel whôre doesn’t mean you can just go around insulting people for no good reason.

There, I obliged you. See how considerate I am?

  • 10centsworth

I’m laughing. The sheer intellect exposed. amazing.
Mind telling me why you took “insult”?

  • RelentlessIV

We should have resigned Trevor Scott. He might produce a bit more than what we have already.

    Are you making friends again?

  • Goldie7

Yo 10centsworth what’s up? I never said I hated the Steelers; however, I don’t like them either. I also don’t strongly dislike them like the Patriots/Donkeys.
I was only saying that we have a lot Raiders fans here in PA; either they are Raiders fans or like to wear Raiders gear. Oh yea, I don’t like Big Ben either. lol

  • 10centsworth

Ha. Nah, just someone sticking up for you.

  • the electrifying dr robert

    What is “attitude”?

Why is it used automatically as having a nasty attitude?

U can have a pleasant attitude. An indifferent attitude. A bad attitude. Is that what u want?

  • the electrifying dr robert

NWA were, umm, “dudes” wit attitude.

    Was it a positive attitude?

    A depressed attitude?

    A jolly attitude?

  • 10centsworth

I know Goldie, I’ve seen you post sporadically and thought I’d respond to this one, slipping in some “perspective”. There are a LOT of Steeler fans in the Bay Area…certainly older folks from that area. They don’t hate the Raiders either, for the same reasons I’ve stated.

  • SnBG

He’s right, especially if Snake was throwing to him.

  • PlunkforHOF

    lmao

  • the electrifying dr robert

    How about “playing with disposition”?

    Or “playing with mood”?

They never say WHAT KIND OF ATTITUDE.

    Just “playing with an attitude”.

What if its the “wrong attitude”?

“But u said play with an attitude. I have an attitude. How was I supposed to know what type of attitude u meant?”

  • 10centsworth

Look at papertigers post. He can tell you what “attitude” is. That you don’t know is no surprise. But glad you asked. You’ll recognize it if you ever see it in S&B again.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

I am not a very popular or likable
person here. I could extend an Olive Branch to you…

  • 10centsworth

What would you do with yourself, Olive Branch in hand? Be agreeable? Nahhhhhhhhhhhh…

  • seymour bush

Teams don’t release good pass rushers in mid season. Besides our pass rush has been surprisingly decent. Put we do need a pass rushing stud at some point.

  • the electrifying dr robert

I know what an attitude is. There are many kinds. Be more specific.

    Surly? Kindhearted? Generous? Feeble?
