Status quo at practice for Raiders; newest addition on the field

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, October 24th, 2013 at 12:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Recent acquisition Martez Wilson is wearing No. 52 and taking part in practice today, less than a day after being claimed off waivers from the New Orleans Saints. Other than that development, today’s practice looks much like the one from the day before.
That is, center Stefen Wisniewski is at practice and showing that he has healed well enough from his knee injury to play Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
And, offensive linemen Menelik Watson (calf), Andre Gurode (knee) and Tony Pashos (hip) aren’t healthy enough to practice once again.
Same goes for strong safety Tyvon Branch, who hasn’t been able to do anything football-related since he tweaked an ankle against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the home-opener.
At first glance, the thing that jumps out about Wilson is his height. He goes 6-foot-4 and looks more like a defensive end, a position he played some with the Saints.
It remains to be seen how the Raiders intend to use Wilson. He has the markings of an edge rusher, something the Raiders are in dire need of right now.
More later once we speak with coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver this afternoon.

    Second.

If the Raiders don’t win, I can’t show my face to my family. All of them are Squealer fans. I’ll have to stay in Oakland and never go home.

  • Just Fire Baby

I am double about my wits about Watson

  • RelentlessIV

He plays well. We’ve all seen. But these injury issues make you think twice.

  • Papertiger

With any luck, Martez Wilson with continue to honor the tradition of the #52 jersey, worn by such greats as Kirk Morrison and Quentin Groves!

  • Theghostronin79

I wondered yesterday if they were gonna us him off the edge, considering our LB’s have been pretty solid thus far.

  • RelentlessIV

ST player at best. Nothing more. Can’t keep dumpster diving for diamonds.

  • Just Fire Baby

It’s easy to say you “play well” when you played a half of a preseason game.
Left tackle isn’t that easy, some dude from England isn’t going to play 9 D-I games at RT and then just go play LT in the NFL no problem.

  • Just Fire Baby

Kirk is now the SDSU color announcer. Got to hang with him a month or so back.
You can tell NFL LB’ing was a struggle for him phsyically, I would guess he isn’t 210 pounds right now.

  • RelentlessIV

He played decently enough. Could be plugged in at G since Veldheer is our LT.

  • turf toe

Hey, I’m in the top twenty. Wish the Raiders were as well

  • Just Fire Baby

I doubt he will ever be any good, for any sustained period of time.

    .@MikeMitchell34 only player in NFL w/ 3 INTs & 2 sacks. Wk7 vs STL: 8 TKLS 1 sack #ballin

  • JOn Wooah

People say he didnt do anything for us.. well maybe he got better?? can that happen?

  • RelentlessIV

He was pretty full of himself for not accomplishing anything in the NFL. What’s his twitter handle? Mr55 or something. He got cut by us and the bills.

  • Just Fire Baby

Lost passion for football as a daily thing.

  • RelentlessIV

    No thanks.

  • Just Fire Baby

    Nope

  • RelentlessIV

RM is gonna screw us with his horrible draft choices.

  • RelentlessIV

Maybe it was a different system.

  • the electrifying dr robert

    No

  • Just Fire Baby

Mike Mitchell hasn’t been all good for Carolina.
Kudo’s to him for having a good month, he did have a passion about his play.
But he was horse crap the beginning of this year, just as he was mostly with us during his tenure.

  • Just Fire Baby

Giordano has forced a fumble, and returned an INT 82 yards for a TD this year as well.
Not interested in him returning either.

  • RelentlessIV

    True dat.

  • R8erEduc8er

    Nah

  • Papertiger

    New Post!

  • the electrifying dr robert

Martez Wilson was the 8th pick of the 3rd round in 2011.

He runs a 4.49 forty and was a top LB coming out after his junior year.

He does have 5 sacks in his brief nfl career.

  • Raider Rick

Dont get excited fellas, once the waiver wire drops another ex packer practice squad reject or a squandered past pick, Reggie will cut this guy too…..Reason #1 why I never buy a current jersey!!
