Hayden, Raiders get ‘wake-up call’ from Eagles up-tempo offense

OAKLAND – Long after the game ended, Raiders rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden sat in front of his locker, half dressed, with a white towel draped over his bowed head.
A short time later, Hayden declined an interview request and exited the locker room, leaving others to explain just how the Philadelphia Eagles carved up the Raiders for 419 yards passing and seven touchdowns in a 49-20 victory.
“He had a tough day,” veteran safety Charles Woodson said of Hayden, “but everybody’s gone through it. If you’ve played in the NFL, you’ve had a long day before. But if you want to play a long time, then you’ve got to get past it.”
Sunday turned into a long day for Hayden and the Raiders from the outset, with the Eagles scoring on their first four possessions. The second and third of those touchdowns were scored by receivers covered by Hayden.
Eagles quarterback Nick Foles etched his name into the NFL record book with the seven touchdown passes. He became only the second player to accomplish the feat since 1969. The Broncos’ Peyton Manning pulled it off against the Baltimore Ravens in the season-opener this season.
This wasn’t the first time Foles passed for seven touchdowns in a game. The other?
“In a video game,” Foles said.
Time and again, Foles completed passes to receivers covered by Hayden, including one to DeSean Jackson for 59 yards that set up the Eagles final touchdown.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen echoed Woodson’s sentiment about Hayden having a difficult time. In fairness, Allen added, there’s plenty of blame to go around in a game when the defense gives up 542 yards.
“D.J. wasn’t the only one that had a tough day,” Allen said. “Obviously, when you play out there on the island and you have a tough day, those things stand out a little bit more.”
Woodson knows firsthand the pressures of succeeding right away at cornerback as a rookie in the NFL, especially one selected in the top half of the first round.
He was picked No. 4 by the Raiders in the 1998 NFL draft and struggled a great deal in his first game, as well as at times his first season.
“D.J. is the 12thpick in the draft,” Woodson said of the Raiders first selection in April. “Nobody’s going to feel sorry for him. And one thing about it is, he was in position. He was in position to make plays. Those are plays he’s going to have to make going forward.”
Indeed, Hayden differs from some others that got victimized by Foles and the Eagles today in that he at least came close to making plays. There were a few plays in which the Raiders failed to cover receivers.
Hayden was stride for stride with Riley Cooper on a deep throw in the second quarter before he tripped as the ball arrived at Cooper’s hands as part of a 63-yard touchdown.
Hayden let Jackson get past him by a couple of yards on the 59-yard completion before he closed ground and just missed getting his hand on the well-thrown pass.
Veteran cornerback Tracy Porter said the Eagles outplayed the Raiders in every facet of the game. He called the defensive showing “flat-out embarrassing.”
Just the same, he said, this was the kind of game that the Raiders can use as a wake-up call and use as a means of improving.
“From the top guy on the team to the last guy on the roster,” Porter said, “we didn’t do our job in preparing for this team as well as we could this week, and it showed.”

Streater would start, but I don’t think he would’ve gotten the opportunity to be noticed by other teams.

  • rifflicks

How Hard is it for Opposing defenses to blanket 2 WR’s????
That’s all Olson can put on the field….2WR’s and 1TE
Pryor can’t operate anything more sophisticated

  • no mas diamante

I see with of the problems that I see with this offense is that when they run the shotgun with Pryor he’s already 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage and then he drops back another five to ten after he he’s snapped the ball putting him ten to 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage to start the play. Ridicules. Hate watching him run around like a chicken with his head cut off like that. Backyard ball only going to go so far…

  • AutumnThunderstorm

We lose to New York, we need to promote Wilson, start Wilson and McGloin for at least a couple of games each to see where we stand at quarterback.

  • prometheus

sorry man but you are delusional about Pryor but you’ll have to accept the truth when hes benched/CUT after a 4-12/5-11 season. thats the way its going to be.

  • rifflicks

EXACTLY…..how do you run slants or other timing routes when you panic at the snap of the ball and are running backwards to get time to make a decision

  • R8erEduc8er

I’m with you man. Highly disappointed. Feel stupid for picking up the Raider D in fantasy.

  • rifflicks

    DO IT NOW

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Pryor could be a super Bowl winning quarterback, but it is at least 3-4 years down the road.

  • rifflicks

in your dreams….but I’d believe Superbowl winning WR or TE

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Pryor will be a QB in the NFL for at least ten years, just don’t know how many of those he will be the starting QB.

  • Taiwan_Raiders

I’m not delusional. And I have no problem if TP gets cut/benched after this season. If he’s not the franchise QB, he’s not. Let’s move on and find another one.
But to say Flynn is better than Pryor, now that is truly delusional. As proven by the action of Seahawks, Raiders, and now Bills. I mean, passed over by UFDA QB, practice squad QB, and cut for a FB.

  • R8erEduc8er

He’s in shotgun a lot because of the lack of protection. It’s easier to get the timing routes down when you start under center imo.

  • rifflicks

I seriously doubt that….bet he’d be good in Canada

  • 2romes

My opinion, the Raiders would be no better with Ryan,Flacco, stafford,RG3,Rivers, Big Ben, Big Red, Locker, Wilson, Newton, Romo and the like, there are only 3 or 4 QB’ that could make this team somewhat better. And I really mean somewhat!!!

  • rifflicks

    you’re right ….in your opinion

  • prometheus

Flynn had 200 yds 1 TD 1 INT and was sacked 7 times in ONE GAME with OAK. thats as good or better than most of TPs starts. facts are facts. neither one is a superbowl QB

  • AutumnThunderstorm

As for our DLine, I don’t know how many will be returning next season:Sims, McGee, and Crawford are the only ones we have under contract beyond this season I think; we need to resign Porter as we cannot continue to sign two starting CBs each season.

  • rifflicks

    Houston is a Keeper

  • CJ Legend 34

Riff how do you know that? Pryor operates in the system that the coaches give him. Was Flynn running a more sophisticated offense? McGloin or Wilson? That’s just stupid talk. Check your perception into what is making you think that way. It sounds like you’re saying he is not intelligent enough to run a different offense, Is that what you’re saying?

  • rifflicks

rewatch the game…..you can count to two can’t you????

  • loyal

With a win I thought we might get to 8-8 or 9-7. The loss makes me think 4-12 or 5-11. Just when you think progress has been made they break your heart……..again and again and again. Depressing.

  • prometheus

haahah fans always think its not their favorite Qbs fault when he sucks

  • prometheus

oh nO!!! would hate to lose my hard fought and sought after IBABUZZ credibility!!!!

  • Taiwan_Raiders

Since Flynn trolls show up. They just can’t accept the fact that Flynn isn’t any good and that TP is better than Flynn. As for TP qualifies to be franchise QB or not. The jury is still out. And most of us will rather wait till the end of season before coming to a conclusion with TP.

  • aig-raiders

We got a good old fashion butt whooping. Shake it off and on to the next week. If we dont get to Eli, we’ll be in deep doodoo as well. Can’t give the opposing qb 8 seconds per play.

  • rifflicks

    WHEN??????
did this become anything but a rebuilding year
with 10 new bargain basement starters on Defense.
You Clowns deceive yourselves into making it something more, and then there’s all hell to pay when they don’t meet your unrealistic expectations…..next year Reggie has over 50 million in cap room…..this team from the start was put together to compete in every game and win when possible.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

players we need to commit to:
    offense:
    Vehldeer
    Wisneiwski
    Watson
    McCants
    Streater
    Moore
    Rivera
(Reece if we are going to actually use him, if not trade him)
    Jennings.

    Defense:
    Porter
    Houston
    Young
    Branch
    Hayden
    Sio
    Roach
    Crawford
    Sims
    Walker
    Burris
    Woodson

    special teams:
    King
    Jones

  • R8erEduc8er

Streeter is ok, but you can find a Streeter any where. He’s not a game changer…D Moore is closer to that.

  • RaidingTexas

I still think 7-9 is where they’ll land.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Our season is in New York.

  • aig-raiders

Yesterday you were blasting the Raider O for exposing our D even though the TOP was only 22 mins for the Eagles. Today, I will give you credit for some actual insightful writing. Amazing how much better people sound when they are not pigeon holed in their agenda.

  • R8erEduc8er

Going into yesterday’s game, our arrow was pointing up. If we had won yesterday, would you still have been this Debbie Downer?

  • rifflicks

    Fall….how ironic

  • rifflicks

    reality a downer for you????

  • R8erEduc8er

Agreed, although I can live without Crawford.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Our future is in core players we have, we draft in 2014, and wise free agent signings we make next off-season.

  • RaidingTexas

I’d certainly make King earn his spot again next season. No free pass for him.

  • R8erEduc8er

Answer the fugging question. Must you be a smartazz with all your posts?

  • R8erEduc8er

    King is playing well imo

  • Taiwan_Raiders

LMAO. If only stat can win you games.
I’ll take TP’s 80yd passing and 2 Int any time as long as he put us in position to win. Oh, why is it that Flynn trolls keep omitting TP’s rushing yards and TD when bringing up stats. Why, that’s not a fair competition, Flynn can’t run. Last I check QB is allowed to run. Personally do I want to see TP pass better? Sure, we all do. But we’ll also take his rushing ability. Those counts too.

  • rifflicks

bite me moron….I would have said they exceeded even their own expectations

  • aig-raiders

I think Tarver underestimated Foles and Riley Cooper yesterday. I didnt see any scheme to pressure the QB. It was as if Tarver was daring Foles to throw to Riley and he ended up getting his a$$ handed to him. No over the top help at all. Rushing 3 guys on 3/16. Didnt see any creative blitz out there.

  • rifflicks

How many chances did they get to make substitutions yesterday on Defense???

  • CJ Legend 34

You idiots keep criticizing Pryor but he is the best athlete, leader, talent, playmaker that you have on the field right now. He plays with more chrisma than D Mac and our whole damn o-line. If he did not do the special things that he does to extend plays, run for a first down. We don’t get the first field goal or TD. His o-line is a bunch of misfit toys, his WRs don’t do a good job of creating seperation. he usually hits them at the end of their routes near the sideline where he extends plays. I’m not saying he is the best but to call him out for every loss is crazy! Not to mention his starting RB DMAC sucks! He has not done a good job of reading holes at all this year and gettign up field. Even though a lot is do to an o-line that does not get good push up front. Pryor is our leading rusher, QB and play maker. Oh and lets not forget his sorry @$$ TE duo. One can catch can’t block. One can bloak but not catch. Not sure what games you watch but if it wa snot for Pryor we would not have one any games this year period! Now print that! If a player like Kapernick was in our offense he would be struggling right now too. Pryor is not scrambling because he wants to, he is scrambling around because he has no other choice!!! Of course he needs work bu tname one player on the Raiders that is better than Pryor right now? Shoot!!! Any day now????

  • RaidingTexas

I don’t think I saw him pin one inside the 20 even once yesterday. It was either a 35 yard punt to the 25 yard line, or a touchback.

  • aig-raiders

do you need subs to come up with a blitz scheme?

  • R8erEduc8er

??? So you wouldn’t have given them any cred. Carry on, bytchboy.

  • rifflicks

do you dream of rushing into Pryor’s arms on a sunny beach and twirling endlessly?

  • R8erEduc8er

    Got a point there
