CBS Sports has re-ignited the Jon Gruden-to-the-Raiders rumor mill, reporting Sunday that either the Raiders or Atlanta Falcons are the most likely teams for a return to coaching.
There is no on-the-record sourcing and some common sense speculation, noting owner Mark Davis’ affinity for Gruden, etc.
If the Raiders continue to play in the manner in which they did in last week’s defeat to Philadelphia, the talk will amplify. Gruden hasn’t spoken on the manner, but when he does he will say “I’m happy with the job I’ve got.”
Playing along for a minute, the Falcons would be able to offer a lot more money and a quarterback in Matt Ryan with whom Gruden would approve. Oakland’s situation is less stable in an economic sense _ no one really knows how much actual cash Davis has to spend _ and Terrelle Pryor is the kind of quarterback Gruden would love one one day and blow a gasket over the next.
All pure speculation, of course, worth about the same as the blogosphere it’s not printed on.
The only real option is to wait and see if the Reggie McKenzie/Dennis Allen regime can deliver the kind of progress Davis wants to see. The guess here is that 7-9 would about do it.
