Gruden season kicks off Week 10

CBS Sports has re-ignited the Jon Gruden-to-the-Raiders rumor mill, reporting Sunday that either the Raiders or Atlanta Falcons are the most likely teams for a return to coaching.

There is no on-the-record sourcing and some common sense speculation, noting owner Mark Davis’ affinity for Gruden, etc.

If the Raiders continue to play in the manner in which they did in last week’s defeat to Philadelphia, the talk will amplify. Gruden hasn’t spoken on the manner, but when he does he will say “I’m happy with the job I’ve got.”

Playing along for a minute, the Falcons would be able to offer a lot more money and a quarterback in Matt Ryan with whom Gruden would approve. Oakland’s situation is less stable in an economic sense _ no one really knows how much actual cash Davis has to spend _ and Terrelle Pryor is the kind of quarterback Gruden would love one one day and blow a gasket over the next.

All pure speculation, of course, worth about the same as the blogosphere it’s not printed on.

The only real option is to wait and see if the Reggie McKenzie/Dennis Allen regime can deliver the kind of progress Davis wants to see. The guess here is that 7-9 would about do it.

    They won’t listen

Quick fix. when will everyone see. Thats not the way of Real Teams! Even the Giants I bet will bounce back next year. The great organizations build through draft and sign mid level hungry guys. Notice the little money Reggie had the mid level defensive guys he signed are PLaying better than seymour and our other D tackles. Look how we actually have Some Linebackers. I havent liked our linebackers in probably 10 years lol. Green bay, Giants, B-more they win and off one year and back the next ! Not out for 10 years! No quick fix please

  • myopinion

jfb, I know u love matt ryan, 7pics 2tds in last two games. time to give up on him right? cant be the future like that?

  • willy91137

You build a team through the draft Al Davis let Gruden make one draft pick a quarterback he picked Marcus Topol and you see the quarterbacks he picked Tampa Bay

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Pryor will have the rest of the year to prove so. He has earned that. Nothing more.

  • Gdog

Even some of his cap-hell crappy teams were sniffing the playoffs (unlike our crappy cap-hell teams that set futility records.)

Gruden ADDED clout as Maddens replacement since then, and could bring in better free agents without overspending.. IT COULD WORK WILLY!

Aren’t you sick of losing with loser HCs yet??

  • VanHeathen30

Not sure i want Reggie Hiring another HC or spending the 40 Mil in cap space…not too sold on his eye for talent.
Hell, i’m not sure i want Mark making these hiring decisions either…SF didn’t start to turn around until the Yorks got out of the way and Mark is yet to realize that, or he’s to happy collecting a bigger check every week.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Careful on the “whatever player we want” talk. While we have more cap room than other teams, the other 31 teams could all individually go all in on their favorite FA and we would be out in esssence the best 31 FA’s.
Players DON’T have to sign with us. We will have to overpay.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Bad year for Matty. He will be fine though long-term.
They will get a top 10 draft pick and rebound, IMO.

  • willy91137

Yes I’m sick of losing him sick of 10 years of quick fixes that didn’t work on the build team through the draft with a franchise quarterback in the strong offense of line and a strong front seven on defense

  • Gdog

Gruden could bring in bigger names for a LOT less money than Reggie and his flunky HCs could.

Why would anyone want to come here right now? Name one reason!

  • Que

have you not noticed Reggies midlevel signings playing better than what we have had in years? We actually have a defense and today will show it again. We dont have depth and thats because of money from previous regime. Id rather have Reggie signing more mid level guys and draft

  • willy91137

You have a man crush on Gruden

  • Que

it wasn’t a matter of no one wanting to come here, it was We Didnt have the money to even talk Seriously with guys.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

If we overpay. That’s it. Gruden would bring some of that down for sure, but how much?

  • Angry Villager with Pitchfork

Let’s go Raiders! It’s game day, get some! MEOW!

  • Gdog

He could bring that in a lot easier than DA/Reggie.

Why would anyone want to come here unless we completely over-pay for them?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

I wouldn’t even say he’s ‘earned’ that at this point. But he’s likely got it, anyway.

  • VanHeathen30

    Just WIN Baby!

  • Raider O

Gruden is not going to coach the Raiders next year. I doubt he is going to coach any team next year.

  • JLofty

    Gruden’s gone soft…

  • myopinion

I dont disagree, just saying too early to write off tp, theres just so many variables. take away a te, stu wr, oline, or bad coordinating and everything changes. and ryans a seasoned vet on the field.

  • Gdog

    DING DING DING.

Nobody is coming here to play on the worst field and the worst team unless we pay top dollar for them (which is EXACTLY what got us into trouble after Gruden LEFT!)

Gruden brings instant respectability and with that discounted free agents! How many of the players like Rice, Romo, RWood, and Garner had top contracts??

    NONE!!

  • Gdog

Those mid-level players got short contracts and will want big bucks to play on a crap team… don’t kid yourself.

A lot of them are one and done with Reggie… think Wheeler…

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

They weren’t top players, so they shouldn’t have had top contracts.
Are you saying we should go and get Gruden and a bunch of vet FA’s on their last legs? What do we have if that doesn’t work out as well as last time?

  • Gdog

Matty is still a top 5 PFF rated QB! I could see Gruden breaking my heart and trying to win a SB with him.

Come on Mark… just make it happen!!

  • JLofty

Is it time to kick some Gnat @$$ yet?…

  • Gdog

    A SB appearance?

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Not writting off TP, but he has about 2 months to prove to the team they shouldn’t draft a QB in the 1st round.
Lots of really good QB’s in this draft, IMO. Can’t pass up on one for a guy that you are uncertain about with 1 year left on his contract.

  • Gdog

Garner was top-shelf btw. The perfect fit for Gruden…

  • JLofty

Dang auto-correct almost posted “lick”. Too early in the morning for THAT…

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Romo just had a great line. “I bet Mark wouldn’t be enamored with what he would have to pay Gruden”

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Gruden didn’t take us to a SB.
5 winning seasons in 11 years as a HC I believe. I would obviously rather have him then DA, but I don’t think Gruden ensures anything but good quotes in the papers and a few more PrimeTime games.

  • Gdog

    NOT WITH GRUDEN!!

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

There’s no good time for that.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

Gruden likes veterans when he leaves the cupboards are bare…..both teams had to do a full rebuild after Gruden left…..think back and remember his exit.

  • Gdog

Reggie will bring in ZERO top shelf free agents because he will refuse to over-pay. Its not in his nature! He has the balls the size of BBs.

    Same ol same ol Raiders…

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

We’re still maneuvering thru’ 1st time cap/salary situations. I’m glad Reg didn’t pay Wheeler, Bryant et al what they got elsewhere.

  • willy91137

All they remember is the winning

  • Gdog

And think of our SB run before it!

  • Gdog

    LOL! Damn all that winning!!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

He didn’t take us to the Super Bowl!!!! The offense massively improved the year after he left.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Think he meant the decade plus before Gruden. And Gruden does get some credit for that team that went to the Superbowl.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

Even when Gruden was here all was the HC of was the offense we all know now that Al ran the Defense and Special Teams.

So you can bring Gruden back but good luck getting that old man out of that sarcophagus.

  • Gdog

Fricking EXCITEMENT??? Can’t have that.. just look at the sad sack posters here.

No, we might get in cap hell if we win too much… like they give SB rings for the GM with the most cap space saved,..

  • willy91137

    money money money

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Hey I am not against it, just saying you are predicting every player is going to want to come here and we will go to the SB.
    Slow your roll.

  • willy91137

Al Davis tried that for 10 years of that work out that team that you think Gruden built was old

  • Gdog

If you think Reggie is going to be anything but a cheapskate miser for here on out, just watch!

He might keep Veld and Houston around… I am not holding my breath on any other player, or any top player regardless of need.

He is building a perenial 8-8 team (which is what GB would be if not for hitting the lottery with Rodgers.)

Helll no to gruden, DA needs to stay for at least 2 more years..
