McDonald grades Raiders performance against Giants

Here is how beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders based off their performance against the New York Giants on Sunday in a 24-20 loss:

Passing offense: Other than a 23-yard hookup from Terrelle Pryor to Denarius Moore on a third-down play that wound up only leading to a field goal, it was a lot of nothing. Moore dropped at least two passes. Pryor was off-target (11 of 26, 122 yards) and threw an interception that was returned 65 yards by Terrell Thomas that swung the game in favor of the Giants for good. Starting wideout Rod Streater caught one pass for six yards.

Grade: F

Rushing offense: Rashad Jennings finished with 20 carries for 88 yards and had 9 carries for 55 yards in the first half. The only other ballcarrier was Pryor, who was hobbled with a right MCL sprain and carried five times for a season-low 19 yards. Jennings ran hard and well for the second straight week and deserves more carries even when Darren McFadden returns. The Raiders ran pretty well against a defense that had been stout against the run.

Grade: B

Pass defense: Whether it was the swirling wind or the swirling defenders occasionally at his feet, Eli Maning was 11 of 22 for 140 yards and one touchdown, a perfectly thrown 5-yard pass to Reuben Randle, who was actually covered pretty well by Mike Jenkins. Safety Usama Young, barely used against Philadelphia, had a sack and breakup. Tracy Porter became the first player to pick off both Manning brothers and take it to the house with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Grade: B

Rush defense: Andre Brown, in his first game back after a broken leg, rushed 30 times for 115 yards. New York rushed for 133 yards overall but needed 38 carries to get them. Brown seemed to get a lot of yards after first contact. The Giants didn’t exactly shred the Raiders but did manage eight rushing first downs.

Grade: B-minus

Special teams: Taiwan Jones, one of the Raiders’ best gunners in years, forced a Jerrel Jernigan fumble and then recovered it on the opening kickoff, setting up the Raiders first touchdown. The Raiders regrettably gave it back a short time later when an unblocked middle resulted in blocked punt and a Giants touchdown from Cooper Taylor. Jones was explosive on his two kickoff returns with a 38.5 average. The Raiders had a partially blocked punt as well. Blocked punt for touchdown spoils what could have been a top-line effort.

Grade: C

Coaching: The Raiders were ready to play, got a quick touchdown and effort was not a question. Defensive game plan was sound, but on offense, with Pryor not himself with an MCL sprain, the Raiders seemed to too often outsmart themselves instead of putting the game in the hands of Jennings. Hindsight says run the ball on second-and-goal from the 1 instead of failed play-action. Also left out was Marcel Reece, who never carried the ball and looked good when he caught it, particularly on a 16-yard gain on a screen pass.

Grade: C-minus

Actually, it starts with the QB, but the next priority is OL.
    Somewhat like our Constitution with the Amendments;
    Priority 1/Amendment I> freedom of speech, press, religion, no establishment thereof, etc…the QB;
Priority 2/Amendement II> protecting those freedoms, protecting the QB, thus the OL

  • http://Raiders.com/ Dan78

This game was in Charles Barkley voice… Turrible…. Pryor looks like he is regressing…. I think all the hype got to his head…. Receivers cant catch a cold…. O-line looks like safety cones just a push and you go right through them….. Only bright spot is our D and Jennings…. Lets see what McGloin has cant hurt we are done this season……

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    yep

  • Jason Wilkins

    lol let me finish..
im tired of the Reece left in to block argument..when you have a suspect passer ..their best friend is the TE and RBs out the backfield…there is NO excuse not to get reece 5-10 targets in the pass game with our limited weapons… you need extra blocking help??? well thats what Mastrud and Owale are for…better yet..have you ever heard of using an extra o lineman and report him eliglble..keep him in… reece needs 5 catches a game..period..dont care how bad o line is

  • LB32

I definitely don’t think it’s all TP fault. The O is just too predictable. This is like when Callahan didn’t change anything when the Raiders played in the SB. You can darn near calls the plays by the formation.

  • 2romes

That is where we disagree. He does show signs he could be a good QB. He is just not constant enough. I want a Raider team that is built on 11 guys making things happen not just one.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Did you see that TP almost fumbled the ball on the sneak that gave him the touchdown? Plus, he got no push or lift. Not done well, probably because they don’t practice that play.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    SF would not be where they are now, if Singletary had not come in and cleaned up that mess;
    V. Davis and Willis would not be the probowl dominant players they are w/o Singletary.
SF was a trainwreck just as we were.
Raiders needed a disciplined, team first, winning is the priority HC Singletary was.

  • Morilla_00

Papa on the radio now saying that if Pryor is hurt and can’t run they need to sit him and start McGloin. Because that’s why TP is in there, because he can run.

Papa has access to watch all of practices. All the way through. He’s the only media guy who has this access. He has repeatedly stated that TP is horrible in practice. He is bad on making his reads and getting rid of the ball on time. And also just throwing it in general. He’s said this since 5 months ago.

And I’m a Pryor fan and rooting for him. But he doesn’t look so hot when the opportunities present themselves. He needs to buck up or this year can be it for him.

  • MaddenRaider

Did you see the ball cross the plane? Touchdowwwwwwwwn, Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraiders.

  • Morilla_00

Jennings had a nice day yesterday.

  • LB32

I can darn near call the play when they line up and I don’t have all week to study film!

  • kenchun24

I think (for yesterdays game in particular) the division is…

25% Pryor (still gunshy, running right, holding on the ball way too long, taking unnecessary sacks)

25% Olsen (still going loco in the RZ playcalls like he has all year, trusting the weak passing game way too much in certain situations – like the 80 yard drive to start the 3rd to 1st and goal sputter)

25% O-line (Penalties Penalties Penalties, Barnes Barnes Barnes)

25% The Raiders just don’t have the horses yet at some important units of the team (QB/WR/TE/G./DE/DT). This last one has and will continue to be ongoing until 2014 maybe 2015.

  • JOn Wooah

Tp2 is in because he is the better Qb. McGloin behind this line will look like FLYNN. Period. Mgloin and Tyler wilson are scrubs. I have no problem with drafting another qb.

Tp2 is making this LINE look average. Mclgoin would make them look 2006 era esqe.

Lincoln Kennedy said Tp2 is the only option.. because of this line and the lack of WR who can get open.

  • RediaR

    Quick decisions.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

I agree, not an upgrade, just different; although both play keeping the ball close to the line of scrimmage, but for one or two plays a game downfield.
    Knapp dink and dunk, run to the outside;
Olson, run up the middle, dink& dunk 2 yards deeper, go deep now and then.

  • JOn Wooah

Papa still crys over Carson Palmer.. But PALMER wanted out because of this coaching staff. HE forced his way out. Palmer still averaged about 2ints a game and 1 fumble.. he fumbled again yesterday.

I cant imagine Klaiff Barnes protect Palmer at LT lmao

  • LB32

The whole goes as TP goes. We just don’t much out of our “skilled” players. Really, we have backups starting and they are doing as much as can be expected.

  • LB32

Exacly, we lack are real creativity in formations and play calling.

  • JOn Wooah

Pryor sucks ok,, yet he is in the NFL making 500 thousand a year.. living a good life. U? what are u great at??

  • AutumnThunderstorm

especially that dam delay handoff on 2nd & 10; if we ever get more than 2 yards on that play it will be a miracle

  • kenchun24

I do agree with the Olsen GL flubs after the 80 yard drive to start the 3rd. He also does it on other 3rd and short opps every week it seems.

  • MaddenRaider

Offensive coordinator blows a chance to go up by two scores by using a shotgun on the goal line instead of just using a goal line offense and pounding it in like we did on our only offensive TD of the game. You’re right, there’s issues.

  • JOn Wooah

Like ROMO and ROD WOODSON said.. REECE is not a fullback. He is just being misused.

He should be a tight end. Now that I’d agree with.

  • JOn Wooah

    keep typin hurry

  • LB32

Yes, they should leave him the rest of the year now matter what.

  • Dakota

This might be the second dumbest thing ever said in here….right behind BH Priest’s “Why do you care how much the players make” rant the other night.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

DA should ask Peyton why he never (or hardly ever) uses Sproles to protect the QB.

  • Morilla_00

Good lord, are you 13 years old?

  • MaddenRaider

A downgrade. I’ve never seen Knapp call something so foolish as a shotgun formation on the goal line when our goal line offense is working just fine.

  • JOn Wooah

Greg Papa is proven wrong daily just like he said the niners and Kaep would put up big numbers against Carolina and now way Cam would beat the niners.

    Whaaaa happened?

Whaaa happened when Kaeps TE went out?? OH THAT RIGHT 71 yards passing.

Whaa happened when the Colts couldnt block for Andrew Luck??? oh thats right

  • JOn Wooah

not talking to u. IM talking to the racist troll. If it doesnt appy keep it moving. and let if flyn

  • JOn Wooah

IF it doesnt apply let it fly. Im refering to the racist trolls. and the argument stands. DOnt get mad, just ignore it.

  • loyal

Papa says if Gruden comes in it will cost the Raiders $$$$$ for an entire new staff. Well …….how much did Flynn, Palmer and Dmac cost? What did we get for that?…..4 wins. This fan base has been patient for a long time. Come on Mr. Davis let’s try Gruden 2.0. (Yes I remember Shell 2.0, can’t compare the 2)

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Jennings will be the Raiders leading rusher for the season, following this game in Houston.
    Raiders 17 – Houston 9

  • MaddenRaider

Shotgun on 3rd and short. I was calling it all day here yesterday. “3rd and short, time for the gun!”. I wish I weren’t right, every single time. We might have won the game. We would have won if Olson just used a goal line offense and pounded it in on the 80 yard drive.

  • lefty12

To get Reece those dump off passes you need a QB who can complete them without telegraphing the throw. We don’t have that guy.If we do he isn’t playing.

  • JOn Wooah

90 scholarships for basketball, 100 scholarship offers for football for playing qb.. he could have went anywhere.. ROSE BOWL MVP, SUGAR BOWL MVP.. yet he sucks lmao ok

  • JOn Wooah

exactly… shhh trolls get upset when u bring up money. They think its childish

  • LB32

He would be the best option by far. We have a second Fullback too, replace those scrubs imitating a TE with Reece.

  • MaddenRaider

Not going to happen. We’re not the Dallas Cowboys. We don’t have that kind of money. We got Gruden before he was famous. He didn’t cost anything. And once he did, Al shipped him out. Mark is not as meddling as his father, but one thing hasn’t changed. He’s not going to go out there and pay top dollar for big name management and coaching.

  • Dakota

Ty Detmer and Tim Tebow were awesome in college too….what is your point?

  • lefty12

Reece can’t block well enough as a Fb and you want him at TE where his main job is blocking?SMH

  • JOn Wooah

Its embarassing we roll a UDFA TIght end like mastrud out there and expect Tp2 to be great.

Its embarassing we got a chump like Khalif Barnes “False start” “drive Killer” penalty maching playing LT

  • Dakota

Too short for TE. Well, not that our other TEs are any good, so why the fk not?

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Ignore what? Oh, your comments? Waaay ahead of you. Dakota caught my eye here.

  • JOn Wooah

Passing downs .. sure do. U think RIVERA is a good blocker LMAO.. wake up. Raider fans are funny i tell u

  • LB32

Quicker decisions, guys getting open faster, recognizing when someone is open, non-predictable play calling, etc

  • JOn Wooah

obviously not.. You are always in my mentions. I never respond to u.. yet u do me. I make u feel some type of way obviously.

  • lefty12

LOL,I asked the same question a week or so ago.Someone said he was 16.
