Pre-game McGloin buzz

What they’re saying about Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin going into his first start Sunday against the Houston Texans:

Bill O’Brien, Penn State coach: What can you say about Matt McGloin? Having been in that league, I know that it takes a smart guy. It takes a competitive guy. It takes a guy that does the same things every day. He works at it. He’s in the office early, and he leaves the office late, and that’s what Matt is. Everything Matt gets, he deserves, because he works hard for it. It will be fun to watch.

Penn State offensive lineman Eric Shrive: It’s great. I think he’s going to take this opportunity and run with it. I think it’s well-deserved. Very well-deserved. He has worked real hard, and I won’t be surprised if he goes out and throws for 300 tomorrow.
It’s pretty unique. I don’t know if it has ever been done before, at least here at Penn State, that (Stefen) Wisniewski is going to be the center and he’s going to play quarterback. I think that’s pretty neat.

Penn State linebacker Mike Hull: I’ve been on teams with Matt for three years, and I know what type of person he is and what type of leader he is. He seems he just has that gritty type of attitude where he’s just going to give it everything he has. Whenever he’s presented with an opportunity, he makes the most of it. So, I’m not surprised by this.

Penn State center Ty Howle: He’s a blue collar kid who was a great leader for us last year. It’s great to see him doing well and getting ready to really make his mark. I’m excited for him. He’s a great guy. He was a moxie kid. And he can play.

NFL Network reporter: Mike Silver: Owner Mark Davis loves Terrelle Pryor, the last draft pick of his late father Al. Others in the organization aren’t so convinced that Pryor is the long-term answer. Enter Matt McGloin, who impressed them in training camp as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was described to me by one Raiders source as a poor man’s Jeff Garcia. Chances are they will draft somebody next year; however, it’s all about McGloin in a tough test.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport: I reached out to a Raiders source last night to ask does he actually have the chance to win Terrelle Pryor’s job, and what I was told was today is going to be a good barometer for him. They really love McGloin; I know Greg Olson, their offensive coordinator, does. Talking to Raiders people, he’s tough, he’s smart and when I asked Bill O’Brien – his college coach – last night what to expect, he said competitiveness and a guy who gets us in the right plays.”

It’s an exciting day for the Raider Nation. Because we’re starting Matt McGloin! Matt McGloin! Matt McGloin? Anyone?

  • Chino

    Poor mans Jeff Garcia. Ouch

  • Chino

    I agree 100%

  • RTF916

Just to give you an idea of how much Raider fans really know about Matt McGloin, I mistakenly called him Mark on a previous thread. Nobody noticed.

Didn’t even think of that angle

    Or maybe cared??

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Ever see an old guy soil his Depends and everyone kind of ignores it? Same thing with RTF getting our starting QB’s name wrong.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

    No, he’s still on IR-DFR.

  • RTF916

You know you’ve got a future Hall of Fame QB taking the field when you have endorsements from:

    Bill O’ Brien
    Eric Shrive
    Mike Hull
    Ty Howle

But, Mike Silver did say that McGloin impressed the Raiders in training camp, in the same breath as referring to a Raiders’ source calling him a “poor man’s Jeff Garcia”.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

DMac out again? I’m shocked. Truly.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

So with no Pryor playing, what is Alex7 going to post about all game?

  • RTF916

All of the mechanics and mental awareness that McGloin shows when he checks down for gains of 2-3 yards.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

So you are going to take the Alex7 role of bashing the Raiders QB all game long?

Wow, there has to be some helluva arbitrage opportunities for people who bet the under earlier this week

  • Raider O

McGloin is a “poor man’s Jeff Garcia”?! Great!

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Garcia made Pro Bowls and won playoff games, so I will take a slightly less version of that for now.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

You’d prefer Pryor running around and around and around and around before taking a 15-yard sack?

  • RTF916

You made my point for me. You guys are so convinced that McGloin is better than Pryor simply because he’s not as mobile as Pryor, that you believe check downs for 2 yard gains are successful plays.

  • Raider O

Another wasted top 5 pick. I don’t complain a lot because the guy I wanted was a bigger bust. I wanted Gholston.

  • the legendary dr robert

most don’t read ur drivel, but someone did note it.

    so ur wrong.

  • plunkhead

I read that title and I thought Scary was gonna give us some gametime scoop. Like how Mad Matt and his backup Teacup Ty are tossing the pigskin
    No such luck

  • Dakota

Well, the Raiders know Pryor psychologically isn’t right….faking this injury once his stock fell, and crying after games, so they are looking at this other kid….good move. Eliminate this kid next so there is no question that we need a QB in round 1.

  • the legendary dr robert

wait till the game to start talking about it

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

A 2-yard checkdown IS a successful play if it’s 3rd and 1 or 2. Better than running around for 30 seconds and getting sacked. AGAIN.

  • RTF916

How about a check down for two yards on 3rd and five?

  • Raider O

What do you think, should we draft a QB like Hundley, Carr, or Boyd in the 1st, or draft a pass rusher/ WR in the 1st and a QB like Murray in the 2nd or 3rd?
Is their a huge gap between 1st and 2nd tier QBs this draft?

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Obviously that would not be a successful play. What makes you think McGloin would throw it?

  • the legendary dr robert

u apparently are smarter than bill walsh.

it’s called “high percentage and yac”.

  • rifflicks

as long as he moves the chains does it matter???

  • RTF916

If there’s yards after the catch.

  • Rico Stifler

No, we don’t think he is better cuz he isn’t as mobile as pryor. We think he is better cuz he is a much better passer than pryor… See the difference? but I doubt you can with pryor’s pubes in your eyes….

    Some more scouting on McGloin

McGloin actually thinks he has a strong arm and one scout said he really did not throw it long at Penn State (was not asked to). Another said that the dropping off passes were a result of when he did not step into throws while scrambling.
    ******************************
03/16/2013 – McGloin hopes his smarts get him NFL tryout…McGloin went from a walk-on out of West Scranton High School to the starting quarterback at Penn State and helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 8-4 season in Bill O’Brien’s first year as the head coach. Now, all McGloin is hoping for is a chance to get in a NFL camp and prove he belongs. He took the first step on Monday performing in front of representatives from 25 teams at Penn State’s pro day. “I thought I did the drills well and ran well,” McGloin said. “My mechanics looked good and I threw some nice balls. I am my own worst critic. I just have to be patient and wait it out.”

While he believes getting drafted is a long shot, McGloin believes some of his advantages are having a strong arm, his ability to throw the deep ball and having played a season under O’Brien, who brought the New England Patriots offense to Penn State. “I am definitely a cerebral quarterback,” McGloin said. “I’ll get in the playbook and check in and out of the right plays. My goal is to get in a camp and grasp the system. The feedback has been good. They all have enough film on me and they have seen what I have done in person. It is out of my hands and I have no control over what goes on.” – Steve Bennett, The Citizens Voice

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Ouch! But this also shows why those “Clown for Clowney” idiots are always wrong. People on this very board were MAD when we won games in 2007 “because now we’ll never get MCFADDEN!” Cut to six years later, and most of us can’t way to see this guy and his “I’m hurt again!” shtick hit the road.

  • RTF916

    What’s it to you?

  • the legendary dr robert

thats the plan. that’s why they throw it underneath. cuz it’s open and u throw it in stride and let the wr be a runner.

see jerry rice. but u don’t get it.

  • Dakota

Newsflash….the guy that blew all of those draft picks is DEAD.

  • RTF916

Well that’s something, coming from someone who responds to just about every one of my comments.

  • Rico Stifler

I think he is too dumb to realize that pryor repeatedly threw short on third downs and thus not converting….

  • rifflicks

I spelled it wrong for days once

  • RTF916

Don’t forget about the endorsements from Eric Shrive and Mike Hull!

  • RaidO

    Kind of sounds llke Flynn..

    Matt McGloin

    School: Penn State

    Position: QB

Bio: Took over the starting job as a senior and threw for 60.5 %/3266 yards/24TDs/5 INTs. Part-time starter the previous two seasons.

Positive: Accurate-timing passer best in the short and intermediate field. Patient in the pocket, sells ball fakes, and buys as much time as possible for receivers. Sidesteps the blitz, shows the ability to scramble away from the rush, and keeps his eyes downfield. Effectively controls the offense, knows where his receivers are on the field, and goes to secondary targets when necessary.

Negative: Lacks the big-time arm and the ability to power the ball through the small windows. Ineffective getting the ball downfield, which results in lost opportunities for the offense. Does not consistently follow through over his top foot.

Analysis: McGloin turned in a terrific senior season, yet has limited physical skills and upside potential for the next level. His best opportunity at the next level is latching on with a West Coast or timing offense.

  • the legendary dr robert

some but i have a weakness for making fun of the “stupids”.

  • RTF916

Oh, we have a receiver as good as Jerry Rice?

  • the legendary dr robert

    u don’t get football.

  • Rico Stifler

Garcia went to multiple pro bowls and led the niners to the playoffs several times… It isn’t a diss….

  • rifflicks

    Me too

  • the legendary dr robert

    sweet!

  • RTF916

Paid attention and responded to said “drivel”, yet again.
