Raiders cut one linebacker, on verge of adding another

The Raiders waived linebacker Martez Wilson on Tuesday, freeing up a spot on the 53-man roster for the expected return of second-year linebacker Miles Burris.
Burris returned to practice almost three weeks ago after spending the past 10-plus months rehabilitating from offseason knee surgery. The Raiders are obligated to make a move at some point during the 21-day period from when Burris first practiced.
That window ends today, so it seems logical that the Raiders cut Wilson so that they can activate Burris. The only other options the Raiders have when it comes to Burris are to place him on season-ending injured reserve or cut him outright.
Wilson was claimed off waivers from the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 23. His play was limited to special teams.
Burris became an immediate starter for the Raiders as a rookie last season as a result of a knee injury suffered by incumbent Aaron Curry. Burris played well enough to keep his job once Curry returned, and the Raiders ultimately cut Curry.
The Raiders are pretty well set at linebacker right now, with Kevin Burnett, Sio Moore and Nick Roach entrenched as starters. Therefore, Burris likely would be used primarily on special teams from the outset.
Burris is versatile enough to play any linebacker position. As a result, his return would give defensive coordinator Jason Tarver more flexibility in terms of using a 3-4 alignment more often.

    Burris returns?

  • RaidingTexas

That will be buried shortly, and nobody will see it.

  • 8raiderreign8

    Hey Tex…

Hey the D is getting stronger.

    Gotta beat the titans

  • 8raiderreign8

Don’t worry. It’s for personal pride!

  • TrevJo

I can see for Miles and Miles

  • RaidingTexas

Beat the Titans and hope Miami goes down. Puts the Raiders in a good situation for that wildcard.

  • RaidingTexas

    Fair enough

  • rifflicks

Haven’t won back to back games since Oct 2012, and haven’t won 3 in a row since 2010…..and some of you are talking Playoffs….get REAL!!!!

  • the legendary dr robert

Gay Dan “the superfan” garcia is here. I’m out. Enjoy.

Will we see Burris as a pass rusher?

  • Davy Jones

    “Playoffs? PLAYOFFS?”

  • JLofty

Boy one win against the NFC east would have gone a LONG way to making this a legit season….

  • the legendary dr robert

    No

  • alex7

what does 2010 or 2012 have to do with this team? With the current standings? With the current opportunity?

    Nada.

  • RaidingTexas

Until I hear that they’re eliminated, I will hold out hope.

  • Davy Jones

Before you go, was this you in the Chat?

“mcGloin will be our Tom Brady”

  • alex7

    I see it!!!!

  • the legendary dr robert

I posted simply as dr robert. A couple of mine were posted but not that one.

  • Piratical

Seconded. After every loss it’s “Cut everybody and fire the coaches.” After every win, its “playoffs.” Cue Jim Mora.

  • TrevJo

Yeah. Although I’ll take the AFC wins if it’s either-or. (We’re 4-3 in conference with 3 remaining home AFC games and 2 remaining away AFC games.)

  • rifflicks

how about one step, at a time….finally won a game in November

  • Davy Jones

I guessed that was laying it on thick for you. But I am shocked that you thanked Cork, who is so clearly a member of the so-called “Pryor Brigade”.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

Have King’s placeholding issues been resolved, or was that overblown to begin with?
    ***
No issue. Overblown to begin with, as is the misses from the left hash mark.

  • TrevJo

Lots of mediocre AFC teams in the hunt for the 6 seed right now. I don’t personally see us getting to the 9 wins we probably need, but the opportunity is there. I predicted 4-12 so at least we are close to exceeding my expectations already.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

LOL @ Duck. fishing to have Cork hate on King so that MAYBE he can sneak in some support for Kluwe (again). massive fail

  • JLofty

Just should’a won one of those dang games. The NFC East is garbage and another win would really help in the standings about now. Should’a had McGroin play against the Skins….

  • the legendary dr robert

I didn’t thank him. Must be another impostor post.

But cork is cool. Just wrong on that one.

  • TrevJo

I have to say Cork still being in Pryor’s camp is a little disappointing. He made the comment that he thinks Pryor would be the right start because of the message it would send to the team. I asked him what message would that be but he didn’t answer.

  • RaidingTexas

No, only the idiots say to cut the coaches after every loss. They know who they are.

  • J Hill

I’m certainly talking playoffs only 1 game out of the race behind the frickin’ Jets.

Our defense should be good enough to beat Fitzpatrick this week.

  • JLofty

Problem now is the Polish Cannon’s belly fat is pushing thru his rib cage…

  • Piratical

9 wins would be tough, but the only juggernaut lies in week 17 and Mr. Neck might very well not play. It’s not impossible, let’s just keep the car behind the horse and think about making it to 5 wins this week.

  • RaidingTexas

And all I said was if they do beat the Titans this week, it puts them in a good spot.
Some of you guys take a comment and twist it to an extreme. Someone saying a win would “put a team in a good spot” doesn’t equate to them saying “we’re going to the playoffs”.

  • TrevJo

I wouldn’t say 5-6 is a good spot but it could be worse.

  • RaidingTexas

Well, it won’t really be worse than anyone else contending for that final wildcard spot.

  • RaidingTexas

    It’s all relative.

  • RediaR

After this week it is likely that we are penciled into that 6th playoff spot.

  • rifflicks

What if Pryor gets the start?

  • SnBG

If any QB on our roster can get us the win against the Titans, it’s McGloin. Our receivers are on high alert like they have never been with Pryor. They now feel like they will get the ball if they play well and get open.

  • TrevJo

Unless Miami or the Jets are 6-5. But like you said, it’s all relative. With this team’s salary structure, 5-6 would be outstanding.

  • rifflicks

    collapse

  • SnBG

    We will lose.

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

Riffdicks, thats smart just to pass out as soon as the Dawg arrives, WOOF

  • rifflicks

    What if Pryor starts

  • SnBG

If the Chiefs keep pace they will play Manning to the end.

  • Piratical

Their luck has to run out, doesn’t it? :/

  • rifflicks

Has Allen named a starter….could br Pryor

  • RediaR

Could be. But are they really going to sign this Pruor guy off the street and start him?

  • SnBG

I don’t know. Peytons play Chiefs in their place in a couple of weeks. Peytons may not win that one.
