Raiders cut one linebacker, on verge of adding another

The Raiders waived linebacker Martez Wilson on Tuesday, freeing up a spot on the 53-man roster for the expected return of second-year linebacker Miles Burris.
Burris returned to practice almost three weeks ago after spending the past 10-plus months rehabilitating from offseason knee surgery. The Raiders are obligated to make a move at some point during the 21-day period from when Burris first practiced.
That window ends today, so it seems logical that the Raiders cut Wilson so that they can activate Burris. The only other options the Raiders have when it comes to Burris are to place him on season-ending injured reserve or cut him outright.
Wilson was claimed off waivers from the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 23. His play was limited to special teams.
Burris became an immediate starter for the Raiders as a rookie last season as a result of a knee injury suffered by incumbent Aaron Curry. Burris played well enough to keep his job once Curry returned, and the Raiders ultimately cut Curry.
The Raiders are pretty well set at linebacker right now, with Kevin Burnett, Sio Moore and Nick Roach entrenched as starters. Therefore, Burris likely would be used primarily on special teams from the outset.
Burris is versatile enough to play any linebacker position. As a result, his return would give defensive coordinator Jason Tarver more flexibility in terms of using a 3-4 alignment more often.

I hear is good. Really good. Under the radar because he has never played football before.

  • rifflicks

bet they do…..they exposed the Chefs

  • J Hill

Then we will be back to talking about the draft.

  • RaidingTexas

Then I hope we see the Pryor we saw against San Diego.

  • TrevJo

home field is huge for both of those teams. could go either way but i’d bet on kc

  • alex7

“hey, no talking about Sunday’s game! Today is practice day! One day at a time, fellas!”

    =)

  • rifflicks

    we’ll just have to see

  • Davy Jones

I’d guess the message is that the coach won’t be too hasty with the hook if a player slumps.

  • SnBG

It would be good for the Peytons to lose as it will drop them in the standings

  • RaidingTexas

Sorry, I did say “if Miami also loses” in my original post. The point was, if they beat the Titans and Miami loses, the Raiders unbelievably would control their destiny. But yes, they still would need to get business done after beating the Titans. No question.

  • SnBG

Don’t worry, he flip flops a lot.

  • rifflicks

    Slumps?
Bet he’s quick with the hook if he let’s Prior QB start this weekend

  • Davy Jones

Like I said, don’t let your head explode.

  • RaidingTexas

And if they stay only 1 game behind the Jets, then Dec 8 could change everything. Just sayin!

  • rifflicks

    Man Gravy Jones…Freudian slip?

  • SnBG

I know Pryor deceives me but here’s a surprise. McGloin will start.

  • RaidingTexas

And btw, the Raiders will be rolling into New York on 9 days rest. Gotta like that.

  • Davy Jones

Yes, slumps. Easy to forget around here that Pryor had had eight starts in his NFL career. And it’s Pryor with a Y and no apostrophe in lets, chief.

But I’ll give you the quick hook thing. If Pryor does start (and I actually doubt that), he’ll be looking over his shoulder.

  • Raider O

I like Martz Wilson. Great size and speed, but he lacks instinct.

  • KoolKell

    Daily beast

  • seymour bush

Terrelle Pryor certainly has earned the job and he should not lose the job because of injury. He will have the fans behind him in the Coliseum on Sunday. It is the right message to send the team.

  • Davy Jones

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, RimLicks.

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

    Your doodie?

  • Gdog

    Long live Beech!

  • rifflicks

no it’s Prior QB after this week

  • Davy Jones

That’s what I thought Cork’s comment was about as well.

  • rifflicks

BWHAHAHAHA……as the hook comes out after the first INT

  • Davy Jones

Best post of the chat: “I don’t think fans who were
all in on Flynn can accurately evaluate Pryor’s arm.” Fact.

  • rifflicks

then why does that one in your mouth have a foreskin?

  • Raider O

Injuries are part of the game, and it’s not fair for the team to bench a better player because the other player is healthy.
McGloin played well (better than TP), and he should get a chance to showcase his talent in the next few games.

  • rifflicks

million dollar arm with a 10 cent brain

  • Davy Jones

Now, now, Matt Flynn seemed fairly intelligent to me. ;-)

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

I know that McGloin can because there’s magic in his eyes!

  • rifflicks

nice try….and I Never advocated playing Flynn

    Raider O Mad Matt

The NFL is about professionalism, fairness is not part of the equation.
No entitlement programs in the NFL.

  • BossKnows01

I got all hot and bothered over TP after the Indy game, won’t be doing it again. Cant believe people are anointing Mcwhatever his name is as the future. One game is one game, call me after week 16. Not sure he can even stay healthy by then.

  • Raider O

Don’t encourage him. He is a turd monkey.

  • Davy Jones

Get glasses, I was winking when I said it. C’mon, I knew who you were talking about.

  • rifflicks

I wasn’t sure why YOU would be winking at me

  • Raider O

    Exactly.
    Brady and Bledsoe

  • Taiwan_Raiders

So have McGloin. It’s not like TP was doing that well right before injury. His progress stalled. I’m with starting McGloin.

  • Jim Jesus

With a face like that the WINK is key!

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

    Uh, ok, bro

  • Davy Jones

And that’s why I’m not upset if McGloin starts. But here’s the thing- after one game, you’re convinced that McGloin is the better player? Pryor has had better games this year than McGloin had against the Texans. One game and you’re convinced? Not a lot of hard evidence to back that up.

  • TrevJo

How do you figure that Pryor “certainly has earned the job”?

  • rifflicks

I’m sure the fans will do a lot for his confidence when he takes the field

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    Green and Warner
    Pastorini & Plunkett

  • SnBG

He can see for Miles and Miles and Miles.

  • rifflicks

    name that better game
