Allen sticking with McGloin, at least for short term

By Steve Corkran
Friday, November 29th, 2013 at 2:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA – Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Friday that he intends to stick with Matt McGloin as his starting quarterback for now. However, Allen also wants to get another look at Terrelle Pryor before this season ends.
It’s all part of Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie gathering as much information as possible on their quarterback situation before they head into the offseason.
“I don’t think he’s done anything to play himself out of that position,” Allen said of McGloin.
At the same time, Allen stopped short of anointing McGloin the unquestioned starter the final four games.
Most important, the Raiders need to have a firm grasp on what they have in McGloin and Pryor. To that end, Allen said he wants to see more of Pryor this season, too.
“We need to have a good evaluation of what we have at the quarterback position as we move forward,” Allen said. “These last four weeks will be instrumental in us being able to do that.”
Next year’s NFL draft is regarded as a quarterback-rich one. The Raiders can’t afford to overlook that position if they aren’t sold on either McGloin or Pryor as the long-term answer at a position that has been unsettled since Rich Gannon retired.
Pryor backed up McGloin the past two games, and he is the only other quarterback on the roster now that the Raiders waived rookie Tyler Wilson, a fourth-round draft pick in April.

A first round quarterback will be square one anyway.

  • 0ak R8rs

    Didn’t help in LA.

  • plunkhead

I think it is more likely a retread get us to 500, maybe over. Delrio or lovie may not get us to the SB but they should win some games.
A college coach could completely spin out
but bottom line is its all a gamble

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

The last “Solid Resume” HC hire Al had before Hue was Callahan. Maybe. Norv Turner had been a washout for the Redskins, Shell was unemployable, Kiffin was an assistant college OC, and Cable was a career o-line coach.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    Just a little twist
    Clowney in the first round
    QB in the 2nd
and Spurrier as our new head coach

  • 0ak R8rs

Certainly doesn’t help. Shtiest stadium on professional sports from what I’ve been told.

  • RaidO

We do need to see TP with the improved O line and to see if he figured out he has to get the ball out quicker..

  • Eldiabs

Good point….But when the team has hope early on they fill enough of the house as to not be embarrassing on TV.. Nobody was at that Titan game… Lets also remember we don’t know the true numbers and this is an organization trying to sell the Bay on a new stadium….

  • 0ak R8rs

And again. Why weren’t they at that Titan game? We win and we r 6th seed in the playoffs. No reason for fans not to be there. At least no reason involving the team or it’s coaches.

  • Eldiabs

LA is different animal…Altogether plus at the time it was 90K plus capacity and Al did the same thing with making seats unavailable so it looked better

  • AutumnThunderstorm

CB, Jenkins needs to play every game like he played vs Dallas.

  • 0ak R8rs

You never answered my clowney question from this morning. But ill give you another one. Why the f@ck would clowney play for spurrier in the nfl when he won’t play for him his senior year? The guy is a pre-bust. Get off the clowney train.

  • Eldiabs

I agree DA doesn’t help sales but if you need a new stadium to sell tickets then it’s either your team sucks or your fans do or both. Please stop talking about sellouts when I see 15k-20k empty seats on tv..

  • spiff

whoever the new coach is hope he’s ain’t scared to be aggressive…

  • KoolKell

The one thing the Raider have to improve on is:
Not give that ckskr a lead.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Spurrier? In the NFL again? No. Just flatly no.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    my head coach preferences
    Cowher
    Jimmy Johnson
    Shaw from Stanford
    Dungy
    Edwards

  • Eldiabs

Very easily could lose the rest. He has had his chance and he’s become a better coach but he isn’t even close to what is needed. How did RM see a coord who had the 25th rated defense and say this kid can turn around this org

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Worked pretty well in the Houston game. And San Diego. And Jacksonville. And Pittsburgh.
    Basically every game we won.

  • KoolKell

The 1 main principle the Raiders have to improve on is:
Don’t give that ckskr a lead.

  • Rifflicks

    NEW POST

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Jimmy Johnson’s never coaching again. Herm Edwards was pretty cruddy (54-74) in his two stops. Any of the others would be acceptable, but odds are that DA gets one more year.

  • RaiderGuy50

After reading this post from cork, DA appears to be confident he’s getting more time as HC. He wants to see what Pryor has which would be his due diligence as a HC with better o line, progress, etc. This would help answer if we need to look at a more QB options in the next draft. HC worried about being fired may just stick with “best chance to win QB” and not worry about developmental QB.

  • spiff

clowney seems like a head case. looks to disinterested at times..

  • Eldiabs

I agree and I hate him too

  • Eldiabs

    Everybody knows that

  • Raider Al from Atlanta, Ga

Thank you. That’s why you rehire Hue Jackson. He is not afraid of being aggressive. The most aggressive team always wins.

  • spiff

” YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME “……………………..

  • wildsach

Not Olson’s fault that the D doesn’t hold. That’s all on “3-man blitz Tarver”.

  • Eldiabs

So you are a fan of a team whose GM only promises to be competitive? LOL….Is 8-24 competitive knucklehead? Raider sellouts for 4yrs….nother’ round of Kool Aid for my friend here…When will it be OK to hold those responsible,,responsible

  • Centered00

Pryor is not starting another game. Period.

  • RaiderGuy50

Of course we could but hope not. RM obviously had his characteristics he was looking for and went for it. Plus its not like DA had a slew of pro bowlers to work either- granted its part of RM responsibility of getting good players.
We will find out in 5 weeks or so whether DA’s time has run out.

  • Eldiabs

I don’t know how old you are but I imagine you don’t give us older fans any credit… This team needs to prove it has changed culture before we pull out the pom poms, don’t blame fans for not coming out to see the most dysfunctional org over the last decade

  • M.Shorter

That 3 man rush pisses me off. Only thing I hate about Tarver.

  • Centered00

No we don’t. We know who he is.

  • Eldiabs

Good, prefer new owner and GM to go along but I’ll take what I can get

  • wildsach

QB controversy, numerous injury issues, wTF do u expect ?

  • Eldiabs

Agree, Jets pulled the same crap and have paid dearly

  • 0ak R8rs

I’m 45. Been a fan since ’75, when I was 8. And I see at least one or two games every year on the east coast, just like you apparently. I was at the Giant game, you’re going to the Jet game. And I’ve suffered through the last 20 years minus the Gruden era, just like you.

But al had bigger problems than not understood the salary cap or the true value of FAs or not being able to draft, all deteriorating rapidly over his last 10 years. He also fired coaches every 18 months when he didn’t win a Super Bowl. It’s stupid. It’s not a way to run a successful franchise. Successful franchises have consistency. And

  • 0ak R8rs

    They aren’t built overnight.

  • wildsach

IMO, if the games lost are similar to the last two (Tenn-Dallas), that can def be fixed thru the draft. I think we’re gonna be OK offensively.

  • Eldiabs

Raider job is the graveyard for coaching in NFL may have no choice but to take those guys,,, at least they are proven

  • Eldiabs

Pretty fun same year I got hooked, well still feel the same way just differently than you

  • Eldiabs

I expect what every single other team does,,,,11yrs with a qb controversy, helps when you pick players who aren’t busts and coaches who can coach, and fans that aren’t kool aid drinkers who accept everything MGMT does as good. Lay off the acid. WtF do you expect

  • 0ak R8rs

What about $50 million under the cap, no experienced TEs, WRs or QBs, uncountable injuries on the OL and 10 new starters on defense don’t you understand? Call it excuses if you want. But these particular excuses r facts. Players play for money, on case you haven’t realized that. And we don’t have any. Every game we play, we r playing w $40 to $50 million less in players than the other team.

  • Eldiabs

Just remember I suffer WITH you !!!!!!

  • 0ak R8rs

And he was referring to competitive this year. And we have been. We’ve been in every game but one. Obviously last year was a disaster. For many reasons.

  • wildsach

Geeesh, wonder what ur thoughts were after the D gave up the game vs Titans at the end. Guess that was all on McG in your mind as well.

  • wildsach

TP2 deserves a shot @ WR / TE. Period. He’s already has his shot at QB. Most already have their thoughts on him for that position. Not !

  • wildsach

might be OK if we had 3 Clowney’s.
