McFadden not at practice, Jones working at RB once again

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 at 11:57 am in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA – Taiwan Jones is working at running back in practice Wednesday for the first time since last season.
Jones, a Deer Valley High School graduate, entered the league in 2011 as a running back, but coach Dennis Allen converted Jones to cornerback after last season.
The bulk of Jones’ game action the past two seasons came as a special teams ace.
He is considered by some to have the best shot at making the Pro Bowl among Raiders players this season based on his penchant for making big plays on kick-off and punt coverage.
It’s likely that Jones is back at running back for now as a result of recent injuries to running backs Rashad Jennings, Darren McFadden and Jeremy Stewart.
Jennings is at practice today, but he is fresh from a game in which he suffered a concussion. He won’t be cleared to play Sunday against the New York Jets until he passes a series of league-mandated tests for players that suffer a concussion.
McFadden and Stewart missed practice Wednesday. Stewart injured a knee and an ankle against the Dallas Cowboys last Thursday.
McFadden carried the ball five times for 13 against the Cowboys in his first game back since he hurt a hamstring Nov. 3. He has played in only eight games this season, with 103 carries for 365 yards and four touchdowns.
Jones rushed 22 times for 94 yards his first two seasons. His lone rush this season came on a fake punt.
McFadden is in the final season of the six-year contract he signed with the Raiders in 2008, when he was selected with the fourth pick of the NFL draft out of Arkansas.
He has failed to live up to lofty expectations during his six-year career. He averaged 3.3 yards last season. Jennings rushed for 448 yards in the past five games in place of McFadden as the lead back.
Allen has made it clear that Jennings still is going to get his “touches,” even when McFadden is healthy, based on how well Jennings has played. It remains to be seen whether Allen will use Jones at running back in a game this season.

– In other news, wide receiver Denarius Moore (shoulder), right guard Mike Brisiel (knee) and safety Usama Young (neck) also aren’t practicing today.
Brisiel is on the field, but he is just watching. Lucas Nix is working at Brisiel’s right guard spot in the early portion of practice. Nix has played mostly left guard this season.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch is practicing today for the first time since he suffered an ankle injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars more than 2 1/2 months ago.
Branch missed the past 10 games while he recovered from his injury. It’s conceivable that he will be healthy enough to play against the Jets.
Allen said he didn’t envision Branch needing much practice time before playing in a game once he returned to the field.
Brandian Ross and Young have filled in for Branch since Sept. 15, when Branch got injured.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

There was much celebrating and high-fiving when the announcement was made as to his hiring. I could show you if Cork and co. hadn’t nuked all the comments.

    Re: McFadden
In the words of Jon Richie, “Get off it, man!”

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

How about the big-azz fullback we have–he looked good a few times.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

He’s not going to play Rb. He’s being used in practice is all.

  • RaidingTexas

My bad. There’s an endless Gruden circle jerk going on around here. Watch out for the banana spiders.

  • spiff

    what about rickey Dudley……….?

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Gruden is NOT coming back the Oakland raiders next year to coach. He’ll be in the booth.

Autumn: Todd had a drug problem and JaMarcus suffered from obesity & sleep apnea. not fair to label them as “busts” – the talent was there, but there was just too much other stuff in the way. a bust to me is somebody that you think is great, but totally sucks when you get him, like Menelik Watson

  • Gdog

What makes you believe DA will “work?”

Nothing. You are just being an Azzhole.. fawk off.

I’d take Gruden back in an instant. That doesn’t make me any less of a Raider fan than a Reggie Sycophant excuse maker like you. But keep making up ridiculous excuses… and pointing fingers at others that are sick of them. Its all you know!!

  • lefty12

    Hope not.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

McGloin rated 24th best QB in the NFL.
Not to bad for an udfa, getting third team reps thru camp and first quarter of the season, then 2nd team reps in the middle of the season, losing teams leading WR.
In fact I think McGloin has lead the team to a 14 point lead in 3/4 games started, had the lead in every game started, WRs and TEs are having career games, remaining in contention for a playoff spot.

McLovin & the Raidrettes sounds like a hit to me.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Ever heard of leveraging your position? $$$$$$$$??????

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

So you interject yourself into a conversation that has nothing to do with you, then starting insulting people when they don’t agree with you. All righty then…

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Remember that news sources love rumors. Got you to bite.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

Neg: yeah we should give the Jets a healthy dose of Reece/Olewale … Olson is probably leaning towards Jones & Ford though – his talent evaluation skills are on par with Reggie’s

  • Gdog

No, I get sick of morons saying stupid sheet like “No real Raider fan…” Why is that unclear to you?

  • RaidingTexas

He’s revered too much. His successful run here also happened to be Gannon’s prime years. Then he goes to TB and wins with Dungy’s team. Other than that, his record is abysmal. I think the Raiders just caught the heavily clichéd lightning in a bottle with those two. It’s highly unlikely that you could duplicate that.
I’m not into the shot-in-the-arm. This team needs to get into the second decade of the 21st century. Taking the Nation to a nostalgic happy place is not the way to accomplish that.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

EXACTLY. People don’t seem to grasp this.

  • RaidingTexas

Don’t get me wrong. I like the guy. He had a great swagger on the sideline. But I think it would be a colossal mistake to bring him back as HC.

  • DutchRaid

Yeah, but how can Jones start? He is going to pick up the play book in a week? Pass Protection?

  • DJ Johnny

Maybe. Cork seems convinced Gruden is coaching in 2014 just not with the Raiders.
I don’t know if I agree that the only considerations for players or coaches to join the Raiders come down to $ and the chances of winning a championship quickly.
I think there are other factors.
Cork apparently thinks nothing else comes into play at all.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

    Ricky Dudley,
    DHB the First.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

Dutch: they did the same thing to Pryor. toss him in cold with no reps & see what happens!

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

The only thing JaMarcus “suffered” from was laziness. As for Marinovich: the ESPN “30 for 30″ special on him was fascinating. He even says what his big breaking point was: Right after we’d gone and beat the Giants in NY with him starting, his abusive nimrod father Marv met him at midfield and said (paraphrasing) “You’ve surpassed all my expectations and accomplished what we set out to do. I’m so proud of you.” Todd quickly realized that since he now had his father’s approval, he simply didn’t care about football anymore.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Sorry, Rocky, but I must disagree with you adamantly here.
Marinovich and Russell chose their own path, they are responsible for their illegal drug habit history. They had millions of dollars, they accepted the responsibility and financial rewards of being a starting QB in the NFL.

They set the team back for years each time, they are busts, they had talent they wasted it. They were never were’s.

Watson is talented, having some health issues, he might be the Raiders next Chaz & Darren, he might heal up and become our next Kennedy or Lawrence.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Cork is wrong about a lot of things, ever notice?

  • The Big Banana

Revered too much? I wouldn’t contest that. Valid point.

As for Gannon, he played a hand in his success.

Funny that you apply none of the credit for the Gannon years to Gruden, yet turn right around and credit Dungy for TB’s success at the time.

But then, many of you are very adept at speaking out both sides of your mouth.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

No reps? What are you talking about? He’d had two full weeks of starter’s reps before the season opener in Indy.

  • DutchRaid

I think he is speaking about last year, SD? Duck, do you think Jones can be the starter?

  • DutchRaid

Who is going to be RB?

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

I’d disagree. Dudley had some good seasons (although nothing close to what he was physically capable of). DHB had ONE good season (when Hue was force-feeding him the ball) and a bunch of cruddy ones.

  • Dakota

Jezuz, I feel like we have been buried under a thousand feet of sand since 2003 and have nothing but a colander to try and dig out with.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

A starter at RB? No. He was moved to defense for a reason.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

lets be real, Duck. Pryor should have been the starter since we were eliminated from the playoffs LAST year. instead we rode it out with Palmer and then Leinart. this year Reggie trades for Flynn & drafts Wilson. the kid was basically given no shot until he outplayed the competition in preseason 2013

  • lefty12

He also split the reps in camp.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

According to Wiki, Gruden’s contract with ESPN runs through 2017. He just signed a new one last year.
If he took a job, why not Miami? He loves Florida, still lives there.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

And their stadium isn’t a sewage-infested dump, either.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Completely forgot about him, put him in the DHB, category.
Oh and this would come under that, ” Thanks for reminding me, ” comment.
Please don’t ever do that again. ..lol.

  • JOn Wooah

Ya cuz WIKI knows the entire contract clause right?? Gruden said he basically can come back at anytime.

    LOL at wikipedia

  • DJ Johnny

Do we consider the roster as having anything to do with Gruden’s bad years?
11 seasons coaching and he had TWO (2) losing seaons.
His worst stretch was going 12-20 (7-9 then 5-11) and THEN he promptly went 11-5.
Yes he was fired by Tampa but it was after he posted a winning 9-7 record but just missed the playoffs.
We’d KILL for 9-7 around here and even his worst stretch is better than DA’s 8-20.

  • Al_is_theraiders

just sit out branch wait for the new coach…

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

He could never learn to catch a clutch pass. How many times in the end zone did he have the ball hit him in the hands? Achhhhhhhh.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

might get a few shots, see what he’s got

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

    Fire Reggie now

  • AutumnThunderstorm

in fact he might Excel in Olson’s game plan

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Lee_Higgins RaiderRockstar

Tarver & Lynn aren’t going anywhere. Lopez? meh. take him or leave him

  • RaidingTexas

Are you that John David Booty guy? You sound just like him. He was 100% certain last winter that Gruden was coming because of these other 100% certain sources. If you are JDB, you sucked as bad at QB as you suck at predicting coaching changes.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

You can always ask out of a contract, yeah. ESPN probably did agree to that, but the life is easssssssssssssy andt he dollars are very nice.

  • Dakota

Gruden? Sure, we might get Gruden…..Jay Gruden.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

What new coach? DA will probably be back next year.
