Woodson still good at telling the truth

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 8th, 2013 at 8:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Whether Charles Woodson is still an elite safety at age 37 is up for debate. What’s not in question is his ability give blunt, honest assessments rather than applying a thick layer of sugar to a sour effort.

Some highlights from two post-game waves of reporters from Woodson, who it should be noted did not exclude himself from the defensive issues in a 37-27 loss to the New York Jets Sunday at the Meadowlands:

The biggest problem for the defense: That’s as embarrassing a game that I’ve ever been a part of. I think each one of us took turns messing up calls, defense (and) not making plays.”

Why the defense struggled: I don’t want to sit here and make excuses about anything. We’ve played well at times and we haven’t played well and today is as bad as we’ve played this whole season. It’s really embarrassing to be a part of it. We were like the Bad News Bears out there today. In saying that, I do want to give credit to our offense. They just kept fighting today and really gave us a chance to still be in the game. Defensively we went out there and basically peed down our legs.”

On if the Jets did anything unexpected on offense: No. They ran what we thought they would run. It’s really been that way for the past couple of weeks now. Teams have just done their stuff and they’ve won with it. We haven’t come up close with stops that we neede to come up with to stay in games or finish games.

On the perception that a month ago, the defense was the strength of the team:
Not today. Not today. Just bad football. A lot of bad football out there today, but the whole group. Everybody’s included. Nobody’s excluded. We all took turns today dropping the ball, basically. We allowed a team to basically do what they wanted today. It’s very embarrassing to put that kind of effort out there on film. It looks bad on us. It looks bad on the coaches. This is a tough way to lose, coming into a game feeling like this is a game you should win and lose the way we lost.

On the inability to win in the East Coast time zone: Again, we felt like this is a game we should have won. I don’t know about losing on the East Coast and all that, or what it hasn’t gotten done, but we haven’t gotten it done. So we’ll have to try to fix that at some point.

On letting struggling quarterback Geno Smith getting into a rhythm and have big game:
Really just inexcusable. I really can’t make any excuses. I can’t pinpoint why today was the way it was. But we allowed him to be sort of great today. It’s really disappointing.

On the screen pass over his fingertips on a rightside blitz that Bilal Powell turned into a 24-yard gain on third down:

They ended up having a screen play on, and when it looks like you’re right there on a screen, that’s really where they want you to be. They were able to get it to the running back for a big gain. Just throughout the game today, we didn’t play good fundamental football. We didn’t do what we were supposed to do as 11 men, as a unit going out there on the field, and that’s what happens when you go out there when you don’t do it.

On what he wants out of the last three games: I want to win. At this point it’s about winning. I don’t care about how it looks or what the record is. Winning is winning to me and I’d love to win the next three games.

On if he’s surprised at the quality of defense being played at this point of the season: I was very surprised at today. I think we’re better than what we displayed out there today. But what we did today is what it is. I really can’t explain why it just went as bad as it did today. One of those games you don’t really have an answer for. Hey man, we’ve got to take it on the chin _ again _ like we have a few other games. All we can do now is move forward and make sure we end on a positive note.

The secret of making sure the team doesn’t finish poorly: Ain’t no secrets. It’s all focus and working hard, which is what you need when you’ve got a winning record. You’ve just got to focus in on your responsibilities and what you’re supposed to do. There’s really no guard against guys thinking about the offseason and getting home and that sort of thing, but once you step on the field, you’ve got to do your job, bottom line.

East Oak: what’s up homeboy? Miami Heat #3peat, baby!!

  • Alex7

this will be the first off-season in 5 years with a full set of draft picks and lots of FA money. Should be fine.

  • Alex7

posted above – plenty of rookie QBs make the playoffs nowadays. Geno Smith might.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Passed on Star because he thought Hayden was a combination of D. Revis and W. Brown. Basically that is what he said though mumbling about it.

  • Alex7

also had the heart condition during the combine, only weeks before the draft. Scared off a handful of people.

Compare Star to our DT Sims, not to Houston. Different positions.

  • eastoaklandraider

so 1 more year it is. better draft the right qb, cutler isnt going anywhere their coach is smarter than that

  • PlunkforHOF

Good job RRS for not being a welsher.

  • Alex7

correct. Next year, if they’re around, is make it or break it year for DA and Reggie. I think Mark, Reggie, DA, and some of us have known that.

    First full off-season in years.

  • eastoaklandraider

i hope not, indiana looks dam good but we all know that means schit right now. my warriors need to get it together quick.

  • Al_is_theraiders

has da been fired yet? what about shrek? cmon mark youre gonna miss out on legit coaches…

  • NewEra S&B

Houston could’ve lined up at the three technique.. So the comparisons there. Anyways, wasn’t comparing Star to Houston, simply questioning the pick.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

FYI: I just got an e-mail from Steve Corkran. KoolKell, KoolKell’s imposter, 10cents, Stormbringer (aka 11angrymen) have all been banned. Cork’s also asking BANG for permission to permanently remove the comments section from this site.

  • Al_is_theraiders

cant believe a word from his mouth…

  • eastoaklandraider

reggie whiffed on star period, hayden looks like a dime-a-dozen db.

  • eastoaklandraider

remove the comment section? so possibly no more posting?

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Exactly. Cork and Becker are getting tired of having to remove Storm and Kell’s garbage on a daily basis. As much as I love posting here, I can’t blame them. Who wants the aggravation?

  • eastoaklandraider

guess riff was right after all.

  • Raider O

Great job snitch. Keep up the good work. SMH

Breaking news: last night, I emailed cork about “11angrymen”, the latest incarnation of stormbringerSS, as cork asked me to do whenever I saw him. Just now, I received this email from him (I did not request the bannings of others). Kool Kell was indeed posting a lot of racist stuff and taunting people about getting banned, and of course Dan Garcia was doing his impostor thing of Kell. I have no idea what 10centsworth did. But apparently cork was on a rampage.

“I just banned KoolKell, his impostor, 11AngryMen and the “10cents….” clown. I also petitioned my bosses to shut down the comments section for good. Feel free to let others know. This is way too out of hand.”

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    What’d I miss?

  • R8erEduc8er

By reading the comments, the consensus seem to think we have the worst GM and HC. Personally, if this blog is a representation of Raider fans, I think we have the worst fans.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Snitch? People with families come here. Every other legitimate commenting site on the web manages to keep garbage like Storm and Kell out. If the BANG IT people can’t do it, that’s there problem (and I don’t believe this is an issue with either Cork or Becker — it’s someone we’re not familiar with).

  • 1960AutumnWind

    New post

  • the authoritative dr robert

    And his follow up:

“Once it crosses the line and gets into racist stuff and personal attacks, that’s when it’s time to draw the line. I’m not sure if the paper will take my strong advice, but it’s in the hands of those at the very top.”

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Kell made a direct physical threat to Steve Corkran in a post last night, and Storm keeps coming back ban after ban to post his offensive KKK-wannabe garbage.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

I received an e-mail with almost identical wording myself.

  • Raider O

    Our SB against the Bucs.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

The actual pootbutt, or the imposter? And 10cents?

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

No, the actual Kell: he was listed 1300+ posts (the imposter is around 100). I have no idea what 10cents said.

  • 1960AutumnWind

11 angry men has no part posting on this blog. I mean a holocaust denier on a football blog?

I guess I am a snitch too because I flagged his posts all the time.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

And legally, they HAVE to keep the posts off the blog. If Storm posts a picture of a lynching and some idiot runs out, lynches a guy then says he got the idea from a picture on this blog, that is a H-U-G-E legal liability for BANG.

  • Raider O

I flagged his posts many times, but we all knew snitching to cork was not a good idea. He is tired of the emails, and now he wants to close the comment section.
    Still SMH

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

Flagging wasn’t doing any good. Any why couldn’t the BANG IT people ban Storm for good on the first try? I was banned from WorldNetDaily (which uses the exact same Disqus system) for ONE slightly tasteless joke I made. Every further attempt to comment there gets a “You do not have permission to post on this thread” message. Why couldn’t they do that for Storm?

  • R8drTahoe in SF

I seem to see a lot of 3rd and long situations where the Raiders defenses will let a player turn a short gain into a first down. It has definitely become a tackling issue over the last few games this season.

  • R8drTahoe in SF

    Every season since 2002

  • zetotalpackage

    Good historical reference!

  • zetotalpackage

If that guy Cap Space will make us a winner, when will we sign him?

  • SnBG

Barnes had a very bad day yesterday and it’s pretty clear he will need to be replaced by Bergs or an O lineman we get in free agency or through the draft. Reece looked good and with Jennings and Murray next year they could be a good group. Especially if Reece becomes a RB. MM imo is not a franchise QB. He throws pretty good but gets a bit rattled and throws to many balls into coverage. Maybe he will get a lot better but I don’t feel it from him.

  • zetotalpackage

Isn’t it a bit early to give up on McGloin? Rookie season, 5 starts, 57% completion average, 7.46 yards per pass attempt, TD:INT ratio of 6:3. Not bad for a new guy with a makeshift offensive line, mediocre receivers, and no running game until Jennings’ recent outburst.

  • Raider O

    New post.
    Keep up Monkeys!

  • http://AdvoCare.com/ Till death do us part

Does that mean I can’t say I don’t like Obama?

  • Blackholepriest

Info do not see a drafted QB starting for this team. In fact IF they give him a decent chance to win his job back i think tp starts and finishes next year.

I think the way they’re treating that kid is criminal, McG is an OK kid when you need him but if they want to sniff another win this year they better start him.

  • Blackholepriest

Info can guarantee you if we start TP we win in Dallas and in NY. Had he been healthy he beats the NYG’s.

  • kenchun24

    lol yup I heard that…

  • jtdxyz

good, besides the obvious few, this seems to be a pretty decent forum, a lot of well thought out opinions, stats, facts, etc…definitely a lot of passion…even though the team has been struggling forever…it’s a nice…if only because I know there are others out there sharing my misery

Bro…..I will always appreciate your game and knowledge of it. I atteneded a birthday bash back in tha day you threw at the Dunsmuir Mansion.
I have been a raider all my life, so it pains me to see so many holes on both sides of ball. Since your Ddefense lets start there Mckenzie gets rid of Seymour but last year picked up his option and now we have no Rich and on the hook for his salary(I think is $15m). Next Mckenzie goes and picks up Matt Flynn and his overly-balooned contract, maaaan! really!
“Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback,” McKenzie said. “He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn’t had enough experience”. Now…family! If he know the QB has no experience(TP) why would you have him compete against another QB with lil to no experience. If TP go down which he did, we stuck with an unexperienced back up.
I dont think its smart to go beyond a two year run under his GM control. Yet alone he make the calls 2014 draft( two of which go to Seattle)
