Allen not worried about job security, says Raiders ‘closer” this season

ALAMEDA – Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday that his team this season is “closer” to being a playoff-caliber team than it was last season and that he isn’t concerned about his job security.
“Listen, that’s not what my job is,” Allen said, when asked if he has received assurance from owner Mark Davis that he’ll be retained beyond this season. “My job is to try to get this team better, get this team ready to play against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I’m not going to talk about speculation or anything like that. I’m going to worry about winning a football game this week.”
The Raiders were 3-10 at this point last season. They finished 4-12 on the heels of an 8-8 campaign in 2011, the season before Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie arrived.
The Raiders are 4-9, with three games remaining against divisional foes – Denver Broncos (11-2), Kansas City (10-3) and San Diego Chargers (6-7).
“We’re a lot closer,” Allen said. “Obviously the record doesn’t say so. We all recognize that, at the end of the day, this is a production business. We understand that you are what your record says you are.
“But I also know there’s a lot of areas where this football team has improved. We’ve got to continue to improve in those areas and other areas so that we’re able to win football games and not come away and be disappointed.”
Allen said he and McKenzie are in lock-step with their long-term outlook for their complete rebuild of a franchise that last finished with a winning record and qualified for the playoffs in 2002.
“Reggie and I have been on the same page in everything that we’ve done,” Allen said. “We understand what the vision is, we have a plan for what we’re trying to get accomplished and we haven’t varied from that, and we won’t waver on that.”
Safety Charles Woodson called the Raiders loss to the New York Jets on Sunday “embarrassing” and reflected badly on players and coaches. The Raiders were in all but two of their first 12 games, but they got outplayed by the lowly Jets in a 37-27 defeat.
Allen said he hasn’t spoken with McKenzie or Davis since the Jets game ended.
Davis vented about the Raiders poor play after the 10th game last season, saying he wanted to see progress. He hasn’t weighed in on his team’s play this season at all to date.

Most times they say rebuilding is a three year process. Year one, tear down. Year two, build up. Year three, voila. Some here want an extra year for RM/DA, though for the life of me I can’t understand why.

  • Davy Jones

    And I like the guy.

  • LB32

They’re both 1-4 through there last 4 games, same results either way.

  • JLofty

I have been wanting to get on board with the Dennis Allen thing since the get-go. Sorry but I cannot do it. I give the guy chances every week to win me over but he just DOESN’T…

  • LB32

    ^1-3

  • KoolKell

Funny, when Pryor was playing you thought the Oline was just fine, even when they were all injured even. So, stfu.

  • c2e

it’s usually not one thing, and recently the issue lies outside of the QB play.

  • Just Win Baby

Playoffs next year or Allen hits the bricks.

  • JLofty

See I see nothing.at.all that gives me an indication of genius ANYWHERE at 1220 HarborBay Parkway…..

  • The_Judge37

ROYMLMAO, Is that all? So all they need is a Franchise QB, Olinemen, Pass Rusher, Depth and then we can expect them to win more than 4 games a season. I don’t think even you believe what you’re posting anymore. I think you’re just on auto-spew now.

Denver is playing for the #1 seed, and hold a one game lead over New England but lose the tiebreaker.
If New England wins out, Denver has to win out.
We will get all that they have and then some.

  • The_Judge37

Maybe because he wasted one year. Because this season was teh “Tear Down”

  • Davy Jones

But NE might not win out. They tried pretty hard to lose to the Browns. Tough games on the road vs. the Phins and Ravens and no Gronk.

  • Just Win Baby

Without Gronkowski, I don’t see the Pats winning out now. Just my opinion. Denver should have a first round bye locked up by wk 17 unless they lose to someone before we play them.

  • tuckrulefool

Ok so why do DA/RM get several years of allowable hot garbage before having to produce when in today’s NFL countless franchises turn things from crap to gold in ONE year (too many examples to list). So why is that our coach/gm don’t play by the same nfl rules? Not saying the rules are necessarily fair but why are there folx in here saying that 2014 (yes 14) is still too soon to judge DA.

    REALLY?

Does anyone (who professes to value logic and accept personal responsibility) accept that nonsense? I don’t. If DA survives the 2013 trainwreck he has to go 9-7 or better with a wild card slot next year.

    ZZ3333RR000 excuses accepted!

  • eastoaklandraider

I agree I dont see a win. this sunday will be our best shot with KC at home

  • 0ak R8rs

    And dj Hayden.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Brady is from outer space, they will more than likely win out.

  • Davy Jones

I think that’s the argument, I’m just not buying it. What is Year one in this version of rebuilding? The “think about it” year? SMH.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

They play 3 teams with a combined record of 18-21.

Lovie Smith = cover two defense. .
.I just hate the thought of another transition into new systems. . .no
continuity. . .yes, I realize I am leaving myself wide open to the
“continuity of failure” comments. . .the flip side is with the roster
about to be completely gutted (except for stalwarts like Veldheer, Wiz,
the young WR’s under contract, Reese, the two QB’s & all the other
players under contract/current draft picks & street FA’s) what’s the
    difference?

I would just hope they realize they need to concentrate on “beefing”
up the lines (speed rusher, one Dt, new guards. . even if they move one
of the young tackles, Watson or McCants &/or Barnes to OG). . .they
need to concentrate on establishing themselves as a physical, run the
ball/stop the run team first. . .there has to be a semblance of a
nucleus to build around. . .so, with the uncertainty of the first few
rounds of the draft, one name, from the third round through the fifth
round to consider. . .a player I’ve been on for 2+ college seasons. .
under both of my blog names (antispy3 as well); Billy Turner, Oline
(currently a LT) for North Dakota State. . .the Bis (with a zon) on.

  • LB32

And started two drives from the 16.

  • 0ak R8rs

No. It’s only part of it. Not even the biggest part. But it hasn’t helped much on gsme day. That’s for sure.

  • the authoritative dr robert

It was u last night going on with ur racist garbage. Don’t blame don’t one else. It wasn’t the impostor. Man up for once.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    That sure helps.
McGloin and Pryor = career backups with very little upside

  • http://Raiders.com/ Dan78

    Zebras saved the Pats again….

  • Vaderdavis

Why so much focus/blame on McGloin, when the most respected, seasoned Raider puts the truth out there?!??
The D was clearly to blame yesterday.PERIOD…

  • 1960AutumnWind

There is way more to evaluating a QB than W/L. This is a team sport. QBs are rated on passer rating, how well they protect the ball, and how quickly they release the ball (i.e. are they taking too many sacks). They should also be rated on running ability especially at critical times (which helps Pryor). If you look at comprhensive rating systems Pryor and Flynn are two of the worst QBs around. McGloin is actually about average.

    See this link:

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb

Look at DVOA that tries to take everything into account. QBR is ESPN’s comprehensive rating.

  • 0ak R8rs

I wish everyone would get off Hayden. He had no training camp. He had no OTAs. CB is arguable the toughest nfl rookie position. And oh, btw, the secondary has fallen apart since he went down. He may work out. He may not. Bit it’s way to early to say he’s a better or worse pick than anyone else. We had a TPN OF HOLES to fill. CB was definitely one Of them.

  • plunkhead

Chicago under Lovie has the best D almost every year. Lovie leaves and the D falls apart while offense gets a little better under o coach trestman
    **
    Hmmmmmmm

  • Vaderdavis

And DA and ROLO must go down, and they must go down hard!!

  • 0ak R8rs

    After Reggie created it, yes.

  • 0ak R8rs

I’m good w that. Well, winning record. Can’t really control playoffs. 9-7 minimum of he’s here.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Actually the oline is better now than then with Velhdeer back but still not very good and fairly similar because of moving all the people around.

  • 0ak R8rs

It’s gonna get spent. Better not to do it on one or two high ticket FAs that’ll most likely disappoint anyway. See, wheeler/Wallace.

  • tuckrulefool

Because Mcgloin was undrafted and therefore MUST suck. Idiots abound here. This alex guy spewing that hayden is a work in progress and will improve year 2 and yr 3. While declaring, in same breath, and after 4 starts, that MCG i s a career back up. Others here agree with that crap. No IQ tests required to post here, that’s for damn sure!

  • Davy Jones

Mike Wallace heating up. Division game on the road. Ravens have a tough D as always. Neither team can afford to lose playing for that last wild card slot. Pats O night and day w and wout Gronk . . .

  • SnBG

Vance Walker,Pat Sims and Lamarr Houston are rated in the green with PFF. Upgrade the D line with another DE to compliment them and the D will improve.

  • 0ak R8rs

Many teams have done that. Where r they now? I’m not happy w coaching right now either. But it’s pretty obvious we r building long term. Looks bleak right now. But way too early to judge a lot of it. But those 1 year turnaround teams? Most slide right back into obscurity shortly after. I’d rather be solid for 10 years than great for 1.

  • JLofty

Stud pass rushing DE HAS to be the second highest priority in the off-season. Just being finding a STUD QB (higher degree of difficulty for sure…)

  • seymour bush

I wonder if losing Urlacher had anything to do with the defense falling apart?

  • Charlie

    Do the math.
    Seven picks per draft.
    53 roster spots.

Figure Reggie gets immediate starters on 50% of his picks.

That means we get on average four starters (rounding up) per year out of college. Add to that one decent UDFA per year (He has two thus far in Matt and Streater).
That means we can overhaul 50% of our roster in FIVE YEARS WITH COLLEGE PLAYERS.
Reggie has had 16 draft picks and only three legit picks in rounds 1-3 and he had to scramble to get last year’s second rounder. (Bergstrom was a compensatory third rounder.)
You want to make a BIG splash in FA???? How many really good quality FA will even be available per year?
    One maybe two per year?
Way too many holes and not enough picks when Reggie got the job. That is why Reggie has a four year deal. No quick fix.

  • 1960AutumnWind

I posted this below. McGloin is actually ranked #9 in the league in a comphrensive QB rating. See link:

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb

Very interested to see a rookie QB come out that high and also have a respectable QBR even with the TE and WRs we have. We need to not judge him to fast. I know I have been critical of RM but he can see this and will not be drafting QB in 1st or 2nd unless he regresses or gets hurt.

  • Back-N-Black

Sad that the team I love has fallen so far that a coach can go back to back years with less than 5 wins and everyone is happy because we are “only” losing by a few points instead of getting blown out.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Great, so the guy who hired and empowered the guy who “doesn’t know a damned thing about offense” is going to get to go hire someone else.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    And then flubbed it

  • SnBG

Agreed. Woodson said the coaches put us in the right positions but we blew it as players.

  • 1960AutumnWind

There were several other losses as well. Roach was key depth and now plays for us. I think they pivoted to offense on talent and it bit them.

  • MEX_GHOST

No way! I´m tired of losing!!!!
