Allen not worried about job security, says Raiders ‘closer” this season

ALAMEDA – Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday that his team this season is “closer” to being a playoff-caliber team than it was last season and that he isn’t concerned about his job security.
“Listen, that’s not what my job is,” Allen said, when asked if he has received assurance from owner Mark Davis that he’ll be retained beyond this season. “My job is to try to get this team better, get this team ready to play against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I’m not going to talk about speculation or anything like that. I’m going to worry about winning a football game this week.”
The Raiders were 3-10 at this point last season. They finished 4-12 on the heels of an 8-8 campaign in 2011, the season before Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie arrived.
The Raiders are 4-9, with three games remaining against divisional foes – Denver Broncos (11-2), Kansas City (10-3) and San Diego Chargers (6-7).
“We’re a lot closer,” Allen said. “Obviously the record doesn’t say so. We all recognize that, at the end of the day, this is a production business. We understand that you are what your record says you are.
“But I also know there’s a lot of areas where this football team has improved. We’ve got to continue to improve in those areas and other areas so that we’re able to win football games and not come away and be disappointed.”
Allen said he and McKenzie are in lock-step with their long-term outlook for their complete rebuild of a franchise that last finished with a winning record and qualified for the playoffs in 2002.
“Reggie and I have been on the same page in everything that we’ve done,” Allen said. “We understand what the vision is, we have a plan for what we’re trying to get accomplished and we haven’t varied from that, and we won’t waver on that.”
Safety Charles Woodson called the Raiders loss to the New York Jets on Sunday “embarrassing” and reflected badly on players and coaches. The Raiders were in all but two of their first 12 games, but they got outplayed by the lowly Jets in a 37-27 defeat.
Allen said he hasn’t spoken with McKenzie or Davis since the Jets game ended.
Davis vented about the Raiders poor play after the 10th game last season, saying he wanted to see progress. He hasn’t weighed in on his team’s play this season at all to date.

I think Lovie would still have a great D

  • tuckrulefool

what gives you (tangible) hope that we are -going in the right direction-?

seriously…i am asking with no sarcasm.

i see nothing at all that i like from DA. horrible game management, insanely conservative game calling with leads, shelving players for no good reason (45) while smashing ones head repeatedly into a wall expecting different results (20).

    i could go on…

  • seymour bush

I don’t think anyone is “happy” about this current situation. It’s just that some of you believe in the easiest solution. Fire the coach. Well, we tried that every few months for 10 years. It doesn’t work. Let’s try something different, like keeping the org, and letting them work through this.

  • LB32

But would you really take E. Manning, Griffin, and A. Smith over McGloin? KC is 10-3 and Alex Smith had a great record with the 9ers the last two years he was there. E. Manning has 2 SBs, not much to think about there. Maybe, Griffin but he’s coming back from injury.

  • JLofty

You people have to be kidding me. The Patriots came back and WON that game yesterday? When I clicked the channel Soup had a 11 point lead with 2 mins left or something didn’t he?

  • 1960AutumnWind

That is what I have been seeing as well. My question is who brought us this collection of players? With all the very real problems he had a given – has he done enough in speaking of RM?

  • 0ak R8rs

You’re smarter than that. 13 weeks in. 2 on IR. Another injured for most of the year. Way too early to say that.

  • Back-N-Black

you must be happy with it. you want another few years of it.

  • DutchRaid

Check Yahoo, they have a story that the REFs robbed that Browns of the win with a BS PI call…

  • Caleb

They fired Hue Jackson when he was 8-8 and traded for Carson Palmer in the middle of the season. Give me a break. The Raiders are pathetic.

Figure Reggie gets immediate starters on 50% of his picks
    ***********************************
No need to “figure”. We got 2 current starters (Moore, Rivera) out of 16.
    That is 12.5%
We waived more guys (3) than are starting

  • Goldie7

Yep, I can understand your point of view; however, DA should have never been a HC in the first place, he’s best at being a DC.

  • brad

For all of you who thought I was wrong! It’s not the players it’s the coaches and if we are going have a new QB next year may as well have a Offensive minded Coaching Staff! so we can try to keep up point wise with teams deemed inferior! and try to hang with those Juggernauts in our Division! This D is what Dennis Allen is here to improve and it stinks! Reggie is a ex- LB as well! Go Raiders!

  • tuckrulefool

if we DONT reset at qb and we make 45 our starting HB next year this would be HHHUUUGE. Money savings and time savings = enormous. (Many Millions and years)

spend all picks and $$ on OL, DL (esp DE) and WR/TE. Do that and add depth?

100% sure we win more than we lose in 2014

    Of course that wont happen.

MCG is smart, not afraid, can read defenses and is accurate. Hes undrafted and 6 feet tall so lets bail on him? Really? People are BLIND or BLINDED by the mediots if they cant see this kid -deserves- more time to develop.

  • Davy Jones

I agree, but only to a point. The continuity argument saves them . . .for this year.

  • Alex7

again, that’s like blaming the Cardinals GM for 2 of his picks being on IR.

Dumb. Projected starters got injured, and let’s not count the guys after round 7 that are starting.

    Double-dumb.

  • LB32

He’s 20th ranked at being a DC. He should’ve never made it past being an assistant. He must be a great BS’er in interviews.

    Madden: ” If
you have players, you’re probably going to win. If you don’t have players,
you’re not going to win. ”
Coaching is not the problem. Losing since 2003 with seven different coaching staffs should tell everyone that.

  • brad

And that’s not experienced play! They will say well they are rookies! LMAO! Go Raiders!

  • SnBG

Don’t count the Pats out just because Gronk is out. Brady will make this team fight all of the way to the end and Denver will have to do the same. We will get Denver’s best at the end.

  • 1960AutumnWind

In fairness he was fairly shaky in the 1st half and that int was a really bad play. However he has really only had a couple of bad halfs out of his 4 starts.

    Year 1 = flub
    Better?

  • c2e

what that kid has done is nothing short of amazing. Limited reps, the playbook, the stage, TP fandome, etc. pretty impressive actually

  • 0ak R8rs

After the last 3 weeks? Not much. I’m not saying they r doing it right, but I know what they r trying to do, an I agree with it. Results matter. Record didn’t matter to me this year. But I’m hugely disappointed w the game management and the defense since Hayden has gone down. We r 3 missed FGs and a Matt Flynn start away from being 7-6. We’ve made plenty of mistakes in execution and coaching. But we haven had much go our way either this year. And the lack of talent showed when the injuries came. We have very little depth. Ross and Adams suck. OL was devastated. We literally just missed getting FIVE turnovers in the cowboy game.

I also can’t list all that’s gone wrong this year.

  • Back-N-Black

I’m so sick of the BS with this team and franchise. I’ve heard the same lame excuses every year for more than a decade and I’ve yet to see anyone in charge make any kind of decision that makes me confident that it will ever be different. Sub-par from the top down doesn’t magically make winners.

  • Caleb

I for one hope we lose all our games, fire Allen and McKenzie, get a higher draft pick, and hire Chucky or even bring back Hue Jackson. 8-8 looks pretty good right now. Hell, Carson Palmer and the Cardinals are 8-5.

  • c2e

    no thanks x 3

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Cardinals GM drafted a RB in the 6th round who would be our best RB.
And a DB who at least played 12 games before going on IR, who never left the field and played all kinds of special teams.
IN the 3rd round, not #12 overall.

  • 1960AutumnWind

We do not have those options. I would take Cam Newton and Wilson as well – not available.

  • The_Judge37

    Isn’t Mastrud still starting?

  • Alex7

Simple truths. Knee-jerk reaction fans think Allen shouldn’t be in 4th place behind 3 AFC West teams with 1st round QBs.

    sigh.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    Rivera is our TE
    That was a quality pick.

  • 1960AutumnWind

If we keep RM/DA probably will. MM is also cheap being an UDFA it gives us lots of cap space and cash to work with over next 3 years.

  • Alex7

    which excuse?

That it’s the coaches’ fault or that we have no franchise QB?

  • tuckrulefool

    amen. sanity!

  • The_Judge37

We had a 1st rond QB, Reggie Traded him to AZ for a 7th round pick and a stack of flap jacks.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

If McGloin and Pryor were to be in this draft, as guys who played some in the NFL, they each would be lucky to be one of the first 6 QB’s taken, and Pryor would probably be around 11th.
These dudes don’t pass the eye test. Gradkowski started off in the NFL as a rookie and broke a record set by Johnny Unitas for crying out loud. Todd Marinovich held the NFL record for most passing yards his 1st two career games for 15 years.
    Eye and smell test.
Pryor and McGloin = good guys, quality backups, garbagio long-term answers

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

Logic and reason are not the tools needed to argue with Alex7

  • Charlie

    JFB
I did not even factor in injuries. That is why Reggie has four years. Watson, Sio, Bergstrom, Hayden, Rivera and Burris could easily be starting next year. Add Matt and Streater and we are about on track.
We need four guys out of next year’s draft and a stud FA to make a big impact.
I do the rest of our money going to guys we want to keep like Roach, Veld, Jennings ETC.

  • Alex7

Madden: ““You have to have talent, because if you don’t have talent, then you can do all the work in the world and it doesn’t make a difference.”

undrafted QB, WRs, and 9 near minimum-salary new defensive players.

    http://livestarringyou.com/2013/08/18/1459/

  • SnBG

I’ll wait until Murray is playing along side of Reece to make a judgement like that.

  • tuckrulefool

exactly…also move 45 to Hback. also under contract. jennings was nice but needs to get paid now. no thanks. use $$ and picks on OL/DL and depth (plus WR). NOT getting yet another QB is no doubt the way to go and would lead to us going WC next yr assuming RM doesnt do asinine things with our picks and boatload of cap $$

  • PlunkforHOF

Welcome back TRF, with your reasonableness.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Allen should be in 4th place with this gutted roster Reggie gave him. I guess he deserves it since he is in lock step with him.

  • the authoritative dr robert

    McG = 3rd round
    Pryor = 7th round/UDFA

  • Davy Jones

Sure, wait for long term results from the draft. Guess what? Each year plenty of GMs get immediate impact from their drafts. Hell, Ozzie seems to do it every year. Reggie didn’t.

  • Back-N-Black

Raiders don’t have a franchise anything

  • Alex7

seriously, how did you not learn from Norv Turner? When he had talent, he won the AFC west 3 times and coached 6 playoff games in just 3 years.

Talent people. Even Callahan won with talent.

  • 1960AutumnWind

By the way did we not go 4-12 with a “1st round QB” last year. How is NE doing with that 6th rounder or Seattle with that 3rd rounder.
