Allen not worried about job security, says Raiders ‘closer” this season

ALAMEDA – Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday that his team this season is “closer” to being a playoff-caliber team than it was last season and that he isn’t concerned about his job security.
“Listen, that’s not what my job is,” Allen said, when asked if he has received assurance from owner Mark Davis that he’ll be retained beyond this season. “My job is to try to get this team better, get this team ready to play against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I’m not going to talk about speculation or anything like that. I’m going to worry about winning a football game this week.”
The Raiders were 3-10 at this point last season. They finished 4-12 on the heels of an 8-8 campaign in 2011, the season before Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie arrived.
The Raiders are 4-9, with three games remaining against divisional foes – Denver Broncos (11-2), Kansas City (10-3) and San Diego Chargers (6-7).
“We’re a lot closer,” Allen said. “Obviously the record doesn’t say so. We all recognize that, at the end of the day, this is a production business. We understand that you are what your record says you are.
“But I also know there’s a lot of areas where this football team has improved. We’ve got to continue to improve in those areas and other areas so that we’re able to win football games and not come away and be disappointed.”
Allen said he and McKenzie are in lock-step with their long-term outlook for their complete rebuild of a franchise that last finished with a winning record and qualified for the playoffs in 2002.
“Reggie and I have been on the same page in everything that we’ve done,” Allen said. “We understand what the vision is, we have a plan for what we’re trying to get accomplished and we haven’t varied from that, and we won’t waver on that.”
Safety Charles Woodson called the Raiders loss to the New York Jets on Sunday “embarrassing” and reflected badly on players and coaches. The Raiders were in all but two of their first 12 games, but they got outplayed by the lowly Jets in a 37-27 defeat.
Allen said he hasn’t spoken with McKenzie or Davis since the Jets game ended.
Davis vented about the Raiders poor play after the 10th game last season, saying he wanted to see progress. He hasn’t weighed in on his team’s play this season at all to date.

Damn, on twitter McFadden announced he was going to be at a Verizon store for signings and everybody is heckling him, lol

  • Alex7

so thank the man who blew 8 straight 1st round picks, and give the new guy at least one full off-season with cap $ and a full slate of draft picks.

Is that odd to ask for?

  • Alex7

let’s ignore the $40 million over the cap.

    That didn’t really happen.

  • 0ak R8rs

    Yep.

  • http://freezetag168.blogspot.com/ freezetag168

I don’t care what the point differential are with the losses this year. Think about this: Sections tarped out this season. Losing one home game next season. If that’s improvement for keeping the job as HC, that’s a sad definition of the word improvement.

  • SnBG

Right on the money Charlie. Ill wait until the end of next season to make up my mind about the 2013 draft class.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    Cash not cap.
We saved a TON of actual dollars by trading Palmer.
After the dead hit and the Flynn salary, we saved peanuts on the cap.

  • PlunkforHOF

And they said you were banned! Don’t ever change.

  • kuhlest

The playoffs would be great and if we hit gold with our new QB (rookie, Cutler, Freeman, Cousin, Mallett) very possible, but if it is a rookie QB then we need to allow for rookie mistakes…..still anything less than 8-8 in 2014 gets DA fired!

  • Alex7

Yep, those guys you mentioned either started or were projected starters in the final pre-season game, all of them. These arguments are nonsense, not factoring in injuries or better free agents brought in at their positions.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

You are the one who said “immediate” starters.
I didn’t know that we had to wait until the final year of their rookie contracts for this immediacy.

  • Davy Jones

No. He can have one. Then he’d better win. Al is gone, and so is the opportunity to blame this team’s fortunes on him. Reggie Mac has had carte blanche, and a rebuild is supposed to take three years.

  • SnBG

Peter King wrote a great article about how bad the refs are and suggested that the NFL will go to a centralized replay system in 2015 and take it out of the hands of the on field ref.

  • Alex7

except most of those guys up there already started. Already. Started.

  • Alex7

    freeze,

no one seems capable of answering this, so I’ll give you a shot.

How many games were the Raiders supposed to win this year, and why were they supposed to be better after gutting $40 million in payroll and not being able to bring in any decently priced free agents?

  • Charlie

    JFB
I hear the term franchise QB but then I see RG and Ryan and Sanchez and Geno. I personally do not even believe in the concept.
Flacco. Ben and Eli all rely on strong supporting casts to be effective.
I do not see any QB coming out this year that will make us much better NEXT year. They all need strong supporting casts.
I think we get better faster staying away from QB this year and fill holes around the QB’s we have.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Should I go find my reply to this and cut and paste. My counter to this is he is falling behind so to speak. He is currently 1/4 on 1st to 3rd round picks. Not at 50% for even starters at this point. Everyone hopes that Hayden and Watson will work out but they have not looked that good yet though Watson looked all right yesterday coming in late. I do not think the 26 yo rookie will even be on the team next year.

He had a chance to have Abraham and passed – that would have really helped the last 5 weeks! He dumped Palmer without a backup plan but the emergence of McGloin has bailed him out. Think of this how competitive would we have been the last 5 weeks without McGloin?

  • kuhlest

8-8 = both jobs are safe

  • Alex7

no one thought Flacco and Ben were that guy either.

  • http://www.cosmicdanceband.com/ SilverandBlack666

So funny how everyone thinks we saved so much money by shoving Palmer out of town….Just not true

  • docta1232

Yeah but # of Super Bowl wins?…Also, the Bears fired Smith when the team failed to reach the playoffs after achieving a 7-1 record at the season’s halfway point…he collapsed, couldn’t keep his team together, never won a Super Bowl (the only SB he made it to was with the team he inherited his first year), and you think he’s the answer? Geesh, please stop this Lovie romanticising.

  • http://freezetag168.blogspot.com/ freezetag168

Yet with talent, Norv never won the AFC title. There needs to be a balance of good coaching, (damn good) and talent.

  • Alex7

no one thought Foles or Russell or Kaep were that guy either.

That guy is in this draft, more than likely. How often are there 4 to 5 first-round QBs and none of them are difference-makers? That’s highly unlikely.

  • Davy Jones

How about two more games? 6-10? Two more wins is such a big ask? Rolleyes.

  • tuckrulefool

You are sounding extremely confident (despite extremely little data to back you up). Now if you said jury is out you would have some credibility. Your Fact-Speak(tm) no matter how confidently you type it (or how nicely your online goatee is quaffed) has 0 value, unfortunately. Thanks for trying though!

  • 1960AutumnWind

    We agree on that one!

  • http://freezetag168.blogspot.com/ freezetag168

Based on what I’ve seen by Reggie these past two seasons, I would not rely on him to find that ever elusive “Franchise QB” for this team. In fact, I don’t credit him for the A Rodgers pick. Serious, how many of you here can trust Reggie to find that Franchise QB?

  • kuhlest

    great point of view!

  • Charlie

    Alex
Ben and Flacco were taken in the first round just like the other names I mentioned.
No rookie QB is going to take us to the super bowl next year.
Lets fill the real glaring outages firstand see what MATT/ TP can do. QB is actually not a big position of need relative to other issues.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

There was 40 seconds left. It was definitely illegal contact, maybe not PI.
Tom would still pulled it off, flag or no flag.
    That’s how he rolls.

  • Alex7

I asked him why we would win more after what we did to our roster and QB and having no full drafts 3 years in a row now.

Why. Why 2 more wins? Magically?

  • plunkhead

I want delrio. We were discussing how coaches affect teams. welcome

  • Alex7

why guess at it? He’ll try with a 1st round pick, and then we’ll know.

He knew Flynn and McGloin were better than Pryor. Give him credit for that.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    I don’t flim-flam on my opinions.
    Sorry.
We will be drafting a QB in the 1st or 2nd round in 2014 (typed with confidence and manbeard trimmers in other hand).

  • aig-raiders

i expect rookie QBs to make mistakes. His positives outweigh his neg all day…especially in the passing game.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    And got hurt or benched/replaced.
Jamarcus also started as well. Probably more games than any of those guys outside of Sio and Rivera ever will.

  • tuckrulefool

So your INSTA-OPINION(tm) is always correct? The built-in arrogance of that alone is impressive! Well done!

  • 1960AutumnWind

Alex have you ever answered my question:
Who was it that put together this roster and did unnecessary things like passing on a DE in the 4th, not getting Abraham when it was a position of need, and dumping their best QB without an adequate backup plan.

I will tell you what I thought = 6 but that was before Flynn face planted and our best offensive and defensive players had injuries that took them off the roster for first 10 games. With that in mind 3-4 seems reasonable but my problem is not with DA it is with Reggie for gutting the roster this bad.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

6 and everyone’s job would have been firmly held.
7+ and they both would have done a bang up job.
    5 ……a little iffy.
    4…….they stink

  • aig-raiders

KC led the league in punts at 9-0 this year. Let’s stop with this Alex Smith great record. I do give him credit for not turning the ball over and that’s it.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Let me put it this way. For season ticket holders the message is we are tanking this year…. Thanks for the business.

  • docta1232

Ah, sorry came in late apparently…it’s just that the Lovie talk won’t stop. I don’t know why people want “proven” coaches that have never won a Super Bowl even though they were given a heckuva lot more time than any of our coaches to do so. It makes-a no sense!

  • tuckrulefool

Fan of the football black and white Fact-Speak(tm)? Maybe not…but do I like your sense of humor. No doubt! Keep it rollin’!

  • Davy Jones

Not magically, same way teams always improve- you bring in players, you try to sign them to reasonable contracts. Not like Reggie did nothing all offseason. And you feel satisfied that all his efforts could produce is treading water at 4-12? Cap problems and no 2nd round pick or not, you ALWAYS expect improvement, and a lack of improvement is ALWAYS something to answer for.

  • 1960AutumnWind

    Alex
RM said it: we will compete and win games… was he just joshing? He was not even mumbling when he said it.

  • Davy Jones

    Bingo.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Flacco took a 5-11 team that won 1 playoff game the previous 7 years, to a playoff win every year he was in the league and then a Super Bowl.
And after Ozzie went on a Reggie-like purge, he is still willing those guys to a wildcard berth and a playoff appearance.
And they will not be a fun out for whoever plays them in the 1st round.

  • brad

He should be he’s in charge of the D! LMAO! Go Raiders!

  • 1960AutumnWind

You seem to have a disconnect. Who is responsible for said talent? The Easter bunny? George Bush? or Reggie McKenzie.

  • plunkhead

That’s why I say might as well keep DA one more year. Theres no proof the next guy will be any better
