Final: Chiefs 56, Raiders 31

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 15th, 2013 at 5:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders officially exited the playoff race Sunday courtesy of Jamaal Charles, who scored five touchdowns in a 56-31 win by the Kansas City Chiefs at O.co Coliseum.

In falling to 4-10, the Raiders were buried under an avalanche of turnovers, with Matt McGloin throwing four interceptions and the Raiders losing a pair of fumbles on a poor shotgun snap from center and on a kickoff return by Taiwan Jones.

The Raiders finished with seven turnovers in all, as Terrelle Pryor threw a late interception to Ron Parker.

Charles, a running back who the Raiders have been able to handle on the ground, destroyed the Oakland defense with touchdown receptions of 49, 39, 16 and 71 yards from Alex Smith and also had a 1-yard touchdown run.

Kansas City, which clinched a playoff berth at 11-3, also got a 6-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Sean McGrath and a 17-yard touchdown run from Knile Davis. It was the most points ever scored against the Raiders.

The Raiders have kept Charles in check on the ground, but found covering him on pass plays next to impossible. Charles finished with eight receptions for 195 yards and scored his first three touchdowns on perfectly executed screen passes.

Smith finished 17 of 20 for 287 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions before giving way to Chase Daniel with the game safely in hand.

The Raiders, who got within 35-31 in the third quarter after trailing 35-10, had two 1-yard run by running back Rashad Jennings and touchdown passes of 18 and 14 yards by Matt McGloin to Andre Holmes and Mychal Rivera.

Sebastian Jankiowski also kicked a 34-yard field goal.

McGloin finished 19 of 37 for 297 yards but left in the fourth quarter after being poked in the eye. He twice left while healthy in favor of Pryor.

What koolaid? do you see me harping for Al to come back as GM? No. I’m giving the man his due & am thankful he made the Raiders what they were.

  • 24

I’ve got one team. I’m ranked 3rd playing #2 so I’m in the Championship game looking to reach the Superbowl. I’m down 22 points and I have Calvin Johnson and Joique Bell left to play. I’m crossing my fingers.

  • Rico Stifler

Yea. I think it is stupid the people who will call a rookie a bust…

  • 0ak R8rs

Screw those rings. Old news. Not relevant. Not important. Virtually meaningless. You bring up a good point about San Diego or Buffalo or other teams that haven’t been fortunate enough to win one. But that’s the only valid part of the argument. Those rings set us apart from being forever shtty. Doesn’t change the fact that we’ve been 3 decades shtty.

  • 24

And if he sucks again next year…he will.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

Except Wolf was in Tamp when they won the 1st Super Bowl. Arugably our best draft was in 1977 when Wolf wasn’t here, not to mention Wolf wanted Harry Jones over Gene Upshaw. Wolf quickly came back here after his bombing in Tampa. Let’s not forget Wolf said McKenzie was “our guy” and he can tell you “who can play.”

Wolf was definitely a good personnel guy but giving credit to a personnel guy over the GM is a little much ain’t it.

  • 24

Agreed! DA will likely get another year though so Tarver should get another chance.

As in the mortal words of Judas Priest” some heads are goons roll”

  • 24

    Time will tell…

  • Rico Stifler

    That’ll be close..

I am winning one by almost 30. I have Antonio Brown playing right now and he has Sanders playing now… I am hopeful to get Rodgers and Welker back for next week. I played Rivera ad Holmes cuz we play like 4 flex positions. Was 9-4 in the reg season with a late season slide cuz of Rodgers’s injury.

  • 24

I lost Wes Welker to injury as well and I didn’t start Julian Edelman, who put up 30 freakin points. It’s hard to foresee that happening…

  • Rico Stifler

Another team has an entire starting line up of players ranked 1-8 at their positions. lol. Scoring double my opponent right now.

  • Rico Stifler

    Yeah.

I did a pre-season trade that ended up saving my season… I traded a 2014 2nd round rookie pick for Nick Foles… I had Matt Ryan at QB, but injuries have killed him this year. That is a 16 team dynasty league…

  • 24

Yeah…the guy that’s currently #1 has only lost 2 games all year. His team is certainly elite. He’s 15 years old and was saying that I was crazy for not starting Edelman with Gronk out. I’m like dude, I don’t have time to master fantasy football like you do haha. I used to be just like him but I don’t know football like I did then. His life is fantasy football.

  • 24

Wow…that’s a cool idea and sounds like a lot of fun. I was really into fantasy football when it first came out. I think I was about 16 then and I’m 31 now. I used to play on sandbox.net and I was King of Fantasy for a long time. Those days are behind me. I have to get lucky now.

  • Rico Stifler

I am 30 and I play my hunches.. Like one was to draft Rivers as my QB2 and he is like th 6th best QB right now… Another was to draft Keenan Allen in the late rounds… Granted, some hunches missed like RG3 and Pitta…

  • Rico Stifler

Yeah, luck plays a part. I am in like 10 leagues and 7 teams made their playoffs.

  • 24

When fantasy first started, RB’s were elite. They were so important because there was many great #1 backs then but the game has changed so much with all of these multi back systems. I made the mistake this year of not picking up a top RB. There’s about 5 TOP running backs to choose from and the rest drop off heavily in points. I will never disregard that position again.

  • FourMoreYears

2014: “Well, we just need more time for our new guys to adjust to the system. Continuity is the key. DA sure has our guys playing hard, though.”

2015: “Well, if not for those couple of games, we would’ve won the division. DA sure has our guys playing hard, though.”

2016: “Maybe this DA isn’t so good, but we better give him another year to be sure. After all, he sure has our guys playing hard.”

2017: “We should’ve fired this guy after the Chiefs dropped 56 on us.”

  • Rico Stifler

My dynasty league, I am Co-LM in it, is in it’s fifth year. I have made playoffs every year except the first season. I won it two years ago and lost in round two last year. I am going back to the title game this year after winning by 23 this week…

  • Rico Stifler

The stacked team i mentioned earlier, I traded Reggie Bush and Andre Brown for Jamal Charles a few weeks ago. lol

  • Eldiabs

Hell one could make the case that al has always been the problem. We traded 13 great years for 30 horrible ones

  • 24

wtf? Who the heck would trade Charles? *smh* I traded DeMarco Murray and Scott Chandler for Julius Thomas and Darren Sproles but that has backfired on me somehow. Go figure!

  • Rico Stifler

Yeah, I typically go RB with my first two picks… But I took Mega in a few leagues and then took Forte in and Bush in the next two rounds…

  • 24

In hindsight. Only 1 team wins the Superbowl every year right?

  • 24

We start 2 QB’s so I went heavy on QB’s and WR’s with Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Calvin Johnson and Wes Welker. I thought that would be enough…it’s gotten me by but an elite RB would have made a huge difference.

  • Rico Stifler

He was weak at RB outside of Charles. I think Helu was his RB2…

Crap… I need AJ Green and Pitta to step up big or I lose another match up… This guy had Charles, ugh…

    Shoulda flexed Quarless over Bowe….

  • 24

It hurts even more when the points were because of the Raiders…*sigh*

  • FourMoreYears

True, but 12 teams get to play for it.

  • the authoritative dr robert

admitting it is the first step to recovery.

  • 24

Hey…we play for the draft…don’t you remember?

  • Rico Stifler

I lost one match up last week by a half point…

  • FourMoreYears

Haha, we don’t even do that well.

We’re like Bane, give us hope just to make it worse when we get crushed.

  • 24

    Bridgewater…just sayin…

  • 2romes

DOC talking to himself again. It’s a common occurrence don’t be alarmed?

  • Rico Stifler

I probably would have gone QB/QB/RB or QB/RB/QB….

I usually follow RB/RB/WR/WR and then BPA from there. I don’t like taking QBs or TEs early unless a good one drops.

  • 24

Great QB’s put up great numbers and my team is called The Decepticons so I picked up Megatron first…lol

  • Eldiabs

Fair enough but he is also the same guy who made following this team SUCK for the last 30years

  • Rico Stifler

lol. I was briefly in a Transformer themed league…

  • 24

Nice…If I win the Superbowl, I may have to change the name to the Voltron’s because I’d be Defending my title and nobody knows how to Defend better than Voltron…lol

  • 24

    New Post!

  • Rico Stifler

    lo. Defender of the Universe!

  • Rico Stifler

I have team names like Vicious Donkey Punchers and Brown Eye Bruisers… One is the New England Man Lovers and has a pretty gay picture of Brady and Tebow… lol

  • 24

That’s hilarious! You must like bands Puscifer and Tool with those names? I am into dark art and have another team name idea as Grim Reapers but that obviously lacks any humor…

  • Rico Stifler

Yeah, I like Tool, but they didn’t inspire my team names. lol. My friends and I used to always joke about the act of donkey punching and I got the Brown Eye Bruisers from a Dane Cook comedy special.

I’m not saying any of that. It’s just funny that someone has so much hate that they can pick quotes out of the blog comment history and throw them in people’s faces.

  • funnyfalcon

dude, guy’s a lifetime backup qb on a superbowl caliber team. stfu already.

  • the authoritative dr robert

but he’s still better than pryor.

  • BLACKBONES

DA also is a stubborn redneck who never could possibly think to use DMAC like the Cheifs used Charles….NO he just rams him into the middle like a battering ram as defenses stack 8-9 in the box. That is what is know as LACK OF IMAGINATION
