McFadden at practice today, as are recent signees

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 18th, 2013 at 11:58 am in Oakland Raiders.

Running back Darren McFadden is on the practice field today, as expected, as he attempts to bounce back from an ankle injury that sidelined him the past two games.
McFadden has missed most or all of the past seven games with hamstring and ankle injuries. He rushed twice in the Eagles game and five times against the Cowboys for his lone action the past seven games.
With McFadden back in the mix, the Raiders suddenly have a crowded backfield. Rashad Jennings, Marcel Reece and Taiwan Jones — he’s still working as a running back after converting from cornerback — all are healthy and itching for touches.
It’s likely that Jennings and Reece will handle the bulk of the workload, given their production during McFadden’s absence and how much the coaching staff values their versatility.

– In other news, the Raiders signed outside linebacker Sam Montgomery, defensive back Johnny Adams and safety Kyle McCarthy and placed them on their practice squad.
The Houston Texans selected Montgomery in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft. He got released in late October, reportedly for an off-field transgression the night before a game.
Montgomery played collegiately at Louisiana State, where he amassed 32.5 tackles for loss and 19.0 sacks. It’s interesting that it took two months or so for another team to sign Montgomery.
Montgomery is wearing No. 57, McCarthy No. 38 and Adams No. 36.

– Defensive tackle Vance Walker is not at practice, meaning he still hasn’t been cleared all the tests required of players that suffer concussions.
Cornerback Charles Woodson is at practice, though he isn’t wearing a helmet or participating in drills during the early portion of the proceedings.
Linebacker Miles Burris is another player that is on the field but not taking part in drills. He is battling an ankle sprain that he suffered against the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday.

Santonio Holmes, MJD to an extent, Cedric Benson, Barrett Jones.
    Lis is no joke.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Cable not fired due to merit it was anger management issues and not disclosing that he had hit a woman.

I watched a lot of A & M ball due to “scouting” Johnny Football and came away less than overly impressed with both Evans and Matthews.
Not that aren’t solid prospects, just not top 10 guys, IMO , although they both might be drafted there.
Matthews seems a little light to me, and isn’t pitching shutouts every week. Actually like their RT a lot more as a value more mid round pick.

  • R8erEduc8er

I wouldn’t doubt it. Hue is a bit of a snake. He even left the org with one final parting shot by saying “they’re gonna gut this place”. I’m sure MD and RM didn’t want that soundbite out there.

  • kenchun24

Yeah…I don’t like Manziel (not in the high 1st anyway) but I’d rather take him over Clowney…Clowney seems like a dude who will need a Belichick to get the best years out of him after a 5 year failure from the OG team that drafts him.

  • wildsach

if we do draft a QB, I’d want Bortles (UCF). But, I want Clowney or Barr first.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Why cut them if we keep them and they walk we get comp picks for them. I never did understand that strategy. If anything or possible IR them so you can get the picks. Really surprised they did not IR McFad to open up a spot.

  • kenchun24

Evans bailed out Manziel plenty IMO and I’ve touted Evans all year on this blog…but the intriguing guy to me now is FSU’s WR Kelvin Benjamin for Oakland (Evans with some speed). Plus I’ve been putting together a FSU wish list for the Raiders since November hehe…they have some good NFL caliber players.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

bowl games I wasn’t planning on watching but now will:

New Mexico bowl- WAZZU made a bowl game gotta watch it.

Fiesta- is Bortles the franchise, be going to the fridge when UCF’s D is on the field.

Las Vegas or is Carr the answer?

You say potato, I say Mack is the beast.

This Saturday, most bowl games are relevant to the Raiders first two picks.

Also little Caesars and cap 1, Donald and Clowney could be our DLine for a decade.

And of course Bridgewater in the Russell Athletic bowl.

  • RaidingTexas

I like Evans. And I also believe the Raiders desperately need a legit #1 WR. But if Manziel is still on the board when the Raiders pick, hard to turn that down.

  • wildsach

why so much emph on QB play when the defense is so horrid. Heck, Peyton & Broncs couldn’t beat SD. Why would U think McG & Co. can w/ the same bad D, did we, all a sudden get a new D ?

  • Davy Jones

Todd McShay’s first mock has the Raiders picking Bortles:

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl

  • SaintKaufman

OK, I know Andre Williams is a freakin beast but watch these lineman just plow over people, guards pulling like trucks out there. Who’s their coach? Are the guards eligible? Anyone care? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujt1S9P2XHE

  • R8erEduc8er

Each game is a separate entity to me. But if the D plays like it has been, both games are losses.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

I haven’t watched any games of the Aggies, but I’ve been reading on their OTs and it seems their RT has more upside in the NFL.

  • Davy Jones

    . . . and I’m fine with that. Draft a QB.

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

O boy, yippee. Darren is back, just in time for a useless non meaningful game. Just like always. Why bother. We need Reece. Much more durable guy. Plus he has bigger balls. Tired of these nutless wonders.

  • DutchRaid

Did I miss anybody making the connection between Bortles and Latvius Murray yet?

  • R8erEduc8er

UCF backfield – Bortles at QB, L Murray at RB

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Kenchun I’m with you on drafting Lamarcus Joyner in the 2nd round, although I think we should use our 3rd in a package deal to move up into the 2nd to draft him.

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

One could argue Reggie is not a good house cleaner. Seems like he threw away the house but left all the trash on the lot.

  • Chuck

He might have but Cable did it to his self once he was determined to play Grad and bench Campbell after Campbell got us on a win streak and had us tied for the division lead.Grad came back and lost and it was over for Cable.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Evans is a jump ball guy only at times. No YAC either, got punked against quality DB’s and disappeared at times. 240 yards one game, 50 the next.
I worry he won’t get separation enough at the next level to be truly elite. Might run a 4.7 or so.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

That is true, but we aren’t getting any comp picks for losing Jacoby Ford.

  • wildsach

You act as if a rookie QB w/ (5 starts) acctd for all the Raiders woes. You sure do have a eye for the game.

  • Chuck

I think the bronco game was before the Thursday night game.

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

It’s just a foggy memory from a time long long ago, so far long ago it just seems it never happened. Just wishful day dreaming.

  • RaidingTexas

What player were they asking DA about in the presser? The one who “takes care of his body” and nobody sees him eat in the dining hall.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    Completely disagree.

He threw away the overpriced aluminum siding, the overpriced and beat up dishwasher, the overpriced tin shingle roofing, the crappie stained glass windows, the overpriced termite invested two by fours.
gutted the rusted plumbing and loose wiring.

We had to live in the aluminum winnabego next to the foundation for a season.

Now we will build., build upon the rock.

  • kenchun24

Yup..FSU wish list from 2014 is the playmaking nickel CB/FS Joyner, WR Kelvin Benjamin and DT Timmy Jernigan and maybe Bryan Stork G/C.

Famous Jameis and the FSU kicker for 2015 lol

  • wildsach

if we cant/dont build this D for next yr, may as well not even, “take the field”.

  • kenchun24

    Heh..I forgot about that.

  • kenchun24

Oh you may be right (no research just recall). Just remember some must wins that went sour…Vikes/Broncs/Lions and the second SD game down the 2011 Hue Palmer Bresnahan stretch.

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

Well I suppose you have a point, but he wasn’t very thorough. He left a outdated toilet in the bathroom, replaced the carpet with the cheapest garbage he could find, hired a bunch cheap labor and is being cheap. His crew foreman is as green as grass.

  • SaintKaufman

    Sounds about right.

  • R8erEduc8er

Don’t know but sounds like Jennings.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I think I found Mistic, or who Mistic aspires to be on twitter.

    https://twitter.com/twonYBAB

  • RaidingTexas

Steelers will take Jameis. he’s the perfect replacement for Rapistberger.

  • kenchun24

Yeah…went gaga for Evans after that Bama game, but he was inconsistent down the stretch. But I would like to see the Raids get a big/strong hands target type at WR (from this college class) in some way. Benjamin,Moncrief etc…

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

When he played Mizzou, who had a guy Grimes who is a 3rd round or so prospect at DB, he followed him all around the field and completely punked him. Was talking trash, being physical with him, Evans started dropping passes, looked like he wanted to quit and had like 17 yards receiving.

  • The Big Banana

Too bad he got shafted on the Winnebago and hired a clueless driver.

  • FourMoreYears

The Kraken on one side of the line and The Clown on the other. Nightmare fuel for opposing QB’s.

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

Gruden to the Longhorns? Why not Oakland?

Correction: Secret deal being hatched to bring Gruden back to Oakland.

  • SaintKaufman

Yeah, but that blue meth is amazing!

  • The Big Banana

I’ll take your word for it.

  • aig-raiders

I heard him on the radio. There is only one self proclaimed Suppa Villain that I know of on a Raider radio station telling us how TP was better than Peyton and all them boys. BTW, heard Adam in NY as a Raider fan, is that RaiderfaninNY on here?

  • 1960AutumnWind

I knew that but never mentioned it. You are breaking news…

  • aig-raiders

    McShay smoking crack again.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Gruden to Texas would give Mark and Reggie an inside edge on scouting longhorns.

  • aig-raiders

If Gruden is leaving the booth, I know it has to be Oakland. He is revered here. Why go somewhere else and have to deal with some teenagers?
