McFadden at practice today, as are recent signees

Running back Darren McFadden is on the practice field today, as expected, as he attempts to bounce back from an ankle injury that sidelined him the past two games.
McFadden has missed most or all of the past seven games with hamstring and ankle injuries. He rushed twice in the Eagles game and five times against the Cowboys for his lone action the past seven games.
With McFadden back in the mix, the Raiders suddenly have a crowded backfield. Rashad Jennings, Marcel Reece and Taiwan Jones — he’s still working as a running back after converting from cornerback — all are healthy and itching for touches.
It’s likely that Jennings and Reece will handle the bulk of the workload, given their production during McFadden’s absence and how much the coaching staff values their versatility.

– In other news, the Raiders signed outside linebacker Sam Montgomery, defensive back Johnny Adams and safety Kyle McCarthy and placed them on their practice squad.
The Houston Texans selected Montgomery in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft. He got released in late October, reportedly for an off-field transgression the night before a game.
Montgomery played collegiately at Louisiana State, where he amassed 32.5 tackles for loss and 19.0 sacks. It’s interesting that it took two months or so for another team to sign Montgomery.
Montgomery is wearing No. 57, McCarthy No. 38 and Adams No. 36.

– Defensive tackle Vance Walker is not at practice, meaning he still hasn’t been cleared all the tests required of players that suffer concussions.
Cornerback Charles Woodson is at practice, though he isn’t wearing a helmet or participating in drills during the early portion of the proceedings.
Linebacker Miles Burris is another player that is on the field but not taking part in drills. He is battling an ankle sprain that he suffered against the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday.

I don’t know. We got on-air personalities, semi-pro personalities and twitter personalities. It is getting a tad confusing, lol.

  • aig-raiders

I heard Priest on the radio many yrs ago after a Jalwarus flop and Atkinson hung up on him…lmao.

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

    Except Clown has McClain attitude

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

Austin is a more desirable place to live, and he will get paid infinitely times more and have his own buyout clauses and such.
Much more freedom in college, and pay most of the time with the big schools.
No state tax in Texas either.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

if we’re bringing in Jon Gruden, he’s gonna want some MAJOR say in what guys are added to the roster… if Mark is enamored with a Chucky reunion it may mean canning Reggie, not just Dennis. Then we’d get some other bean counter scout (GM) to write the checks while JG picks the players and develops them

  • Jayhawk_Raider

Clowney is a clown, we don’t want him in Oakland!

  • AutumnThunderstorm

He would make three times the money at the University of Texas.

  • aig-raiders

and the pressure there? I doubt it. My hunch says Oakland, Houston, or the booth. Houston is extremely attractive imho. One qb away from competing and with Watts and co on the other side?

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I always said he would go to college, and still think that. More freedom to leave whenever he wants and still get paid, and he already won a SB.

  • R8erEduc8er

I can’t vouch for his attitude, but if we want a DE, Clowney fits our defense best imo.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

is Mark gonna be cheap with Head Coaches, like his dad was? if so – cross Gruden off the list. also gotta figure that Mark will be paying Dennis Allen 2 years HC salary to go play golf someplace..

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

Secretly Mark has to ache for Gruden. And Gruden has to pine for Oakland. Oakland would have a parade day if Gruden came back.

  • Big Tom ‘the hand’ Cable

It has to be less than some of the players Reggie let go. Allen would be pennies on the dollar. Give Gruden what he needs. At least the Raids would get an identity back.

  • 1960AutumnWind

I do not agree with Ann K very often but her tweet basically saying JG is not going to leave the both to go to Plano Texas and sit in some 17 year olds living room. He will want to stay in the pros. He may want to wait for Dallas though.

The market is going banana’s after the Fed announced a tapering of “stimulus”.

  • kenchun24

hehe…well, with these types of situations I always err to the “I wasn’t there, so who knows what happened” side of things. But I get the tread with caution with players in these dealios. Not everyone is a boy scout and not everyone is creepy/shady either.

  • Raider O

Unless Titty Monkey gets another job which he will as a college HC or NFL DC.

  • Raider O

    Pride and Ego.
If he leaves the booth, he will be an NFL HC.

  • DanfromVegas

I read on Fansided that DA ” not likely to return.” That being the case, I’d like the next coach to be an established NFL coach. Lovie Smith is the only proven head coach that has won and is pursuing a head coaching job. What do you all think? His Bears’ defense was solid every year.

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    FIRE REGGIE NOW.

  • R8erEduc8er

If Allen goes, everyone should want a QB whisperer as the next head coach.

  • wildsach

    Give it up —-

  • 1960AutumnWind

Same for Houston and Dallas (both of which may have openings as well as ok rosters). Sean Payton makes 8 million Saban makes 5.5 million – pros pay better and no recruiting trips.

  • kenchun24

What if Snyder drops Shanahan and Bruce Allen?. Maybe Chucky and Bruce Allen reunion in Oak for 2015 after Reggie/DA get a 3rd year chance?

  • 1960AutumnWind

If DA stays and right now that is a big if, Tafur and several insiders are saying that they will make a push to bring Freeman in as QB. Olsen has a history with Freeman and thinks he can rehabilitate him.

If that is the case RM will use draft to rebuild the rest of the team. Watch for trade downs…

  • kenchun24

I’ve seen this post many times over the year and gotta say after reading the full Cork chat from yesterday I’m leaning that way too. If DA is a hot seater, Reggie has to be too.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Now that would be a great move.
Could see Reggie going to another overpaid roster, gutting that payroll to set up salary cap space.
He would have the reputation as the Butcher; cutting the fat.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Not going to happen… While I have concerns about some of his moves the real guy in play right now is DA.

  • FourMoreYears

Even if that’s true, which I don’t fully agree with, you still can’t afford to pass on him if you have the chance. Guys like that don’t come along every year.

  • kenchun24

Yeah…Clowney dude has so much raw skills…but when he gets to the NFL…will he be Sapp or McClain? Raids need this 2014 1st round pick to be a solid “Larry Fitz” type (whatever the position, QB, defense/offense).

  • 1960AutumnWind

That is because the stock market is in a bubble because of all the pumped in money from QE.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

The Game, now, Papa, asked about Chuckie coming back:
    1) Says what Gruden told him his dream *really is* is to run a team and have his brother coach it. Papa laughed and said that wouldn’t fly here (or presumable elsewhere). Says yeah, Gruden does say he wants back into football. Says yeah, he thinks Gruden might want to come to Oakland, but the sound in Papa’s voice doesn’t mean anything like that is imminent. ($$$$$$$)
    2) Papa said when Al was alive, Gruden called him, TWICE, (Papa added that Al *made* him call twice. Al–always enjoying playing head games–my thought, not Papa’s) Papa Gruden wanted to talk about coming back, that that was the year Al hired Hue.
    3) Said Al called him after every game just to talk.
    4) Said Al couldn’t stand Cable, thought he was “just a line coach” (I’d imagine when Cable blasted that aide that was IT for Al and Trask)
    5) Said Norv Turner talked too softly to guys like Sapp, and esp. Moss, that that was simply Turner’s nature.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

See my remarks above from The Game a few minutes ago.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooo to Freeman.

  • aig-raiders

    thanks for sharing.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Did not say I wanted this just what is going on in twitter world right now.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    Not enough o’s.

  • JOn Wooah

IF Gruden / baby Gruden came here that would be INTERESTING to say the least. I dont know y it wouldnt fly here??

I mean they gave Reggie and DA a chance lol.. are u kidding me but not GRU?? Also reports saying Gruden could leave for Texas.. actually is a vote in favor of him coming back to OAK… He would love to shock everyone and is playing everything undercover right now.

U cant tell me Mark and Jon Gruden havent talked about teaming back up.. I bet mark has talked to Jon this season about it. Of course no facts and everything is under wraps.. Just remember that Jason la confora article.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    Norv?

  • JOn Wooah

and I heard the same thing Papa said about Gruden too.. I agree with that poster.. he is Not b.s’n Papa did say that

  • aig-raiders

I know Mark Davis loves Gruden. IMHO, the only change with the coaching staff that Mark would do now is if he had a shot a gruden and co. Personally, I would prefer Tony Sporagno if we were to make any changes. I think he has done a fine job this yr and we need to continue with his leadership.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Jon Gruden GM & Jay Gruden HC ?? i’m sure that’s better than Reggie as GM in 2014 and somebody like Marty Mornhinweg as the HC (puke!)

  • aig-raiders

Grude is not a very good judge of talent btw. he tried for yrs to develop a qb in Tampa and was eventually fired for not having one.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

new post, but it’s all about a player for San Diego though.

  • BigBenRexor

You sure about that? Jon did draft and roll with Chris Sims at QB.

  • JOn Wooah

What if history proved that Nobody was ever meant to HC the Oakland Raiders but GRUDEN.. its like we havent had success since the 70′s ..and 80′s.. Only one HC since then worth a dayum

    GRUDEN..

  • kenchun24

    lol

  • 1960AutumnWind

One disturbing thing I saw this year was moves that were more in line to conserve cash more than cap. Real money not cap money. An example was how they handled the punter position. Another was the dearth of multiyear deals. Even the trade down conserved both cap and cash. The heavy use of UDFAs. If Mark is on a tight budget because of the poor gate and all the arrangements for passing the team over watch out!

This could mean front loaded contracts next year and keeping everyone to conserve on outlays for coaches. In addition it could mean only spending right to the minimum 89% of cap and no more.

  • VanHeathen30

    I sense a similar trend…

  • SnBG

I step away from the blog and all hll breaks lose with Gruden talk. Folks, Gruden isn’t coming. He told someone in the press that he isn’t coming back to coaching this yr. He probably will never coach again.
