Allen interested in Raiders re-signing some of team’s prospective free agents

By Steve Corkran
Monday, December 30th, 2013 at 3:51 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have 17 unrestricted free agents. Coach Dennis Allen on Monday in his year-end news conference that re-signing some of those players figures to be critical in the Raiders stability for next season and beyond.
Allen mentioned defensive end Lamarr Houston, offensive tackle Jared Veldheer and safety Charles Woodson as free agents he is interested in the Raiders bringing back.
Here’s a complete list of the unrestricted free agents:
Offense — wide receiver Jacoby Ford, Veldheer, running back Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings, offensive linemen Khalif Barnes, Tony Pashos and Andre Gurode and tight end Jeron Mastrud.
Defense — defensive ends Houston and Jason Hunter, defensive tackles Vance Walker, Pat Sims and Daniel Muir, safeties Woodson and Usama Young, and cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins.
Houston said after Sunday’s game that it’s “very possible” that he had played his final game with the Raiders and that he wasn’t sure if the Raiders wanted him back.
Here’s his words verbatim.
“I believe that Dennis Allen and the Raiders might be looking to move on and have me go to another team or move on and find something more what they want for their system and their scheme,” Houston said. “Who knows? It’s a rough business and nothing’s guaranteed and everything changes from day to day.”
Later that day, Houston took to Twitter to change his tune.
“I would love to b back in Oakland if they will take me. Best fans in the league … u listen to the media, u a fool.”
Maybe the media can jog Houston’s memory by playing back a tape from the interview in question. The fools in the media would be glad to play back the tape recording, and they were prepared to do so Monday, though Houston didn’t come into the locker room during media access.
Allen addressed the issue Monday.
“I did see that quote, and that’s not the case,” Allen said in reference to Houston saying Allen might not want Houston back. “Obviously I sat down with Lamarr today and had a nice discussion with him. We’d love to have him back. We think he fits our system and what we’re trying to do and we think he’s a guy that we can build with.”

– Allen fired four assistant coaches on the day after the regular-season finale last season. He kept his staff intact this season, and it sounds as if that’s the approach he’s taking for the long-term.
“I don’t anticipate a lot of changes,” Allen said. “We’ll see what happens over the next few days and, obviously, there are a lot of discussions that have to be made. So, it’s probably not the right time to be able to make any type of comments on that, but I’m not looking to make a lot of changes.”

– Allen on Monday met with almost every player on his roster before the players departed the facility for the final time this season. During the team and individual meetings, Allen delivered a straightforward message.
“I said that I don’t plan on going anywhere, I plan on being here,” Allen said. “I talked about, we got 113 days between now and the start of the offseason program and we need to make sure that we have a good plan for what we’re gonna do over these next 113 days.
“I talked to all of them from a free agency standpoint about making sure we keep open lines of communication going. If they have any questions or concerns, they need to make sure that they contact me, and I can give them the right answers. And I told them to make sure they do things the right way off the field. The time to have your name in the paper is during the season, not during the offseason. So, make sure that you do the right things and you stay out of trouble.”

– The Raiders came within six points of setting a franchise record for most points allowed in a season. In particular, the defense struggled down the stretch.
Allen said the Raiders need to improve on third-down efficiency and red-zone defense, for sure.
“We have to do a better job with execution,” Allen said. “Obviously, guys are trying to do things the right way, so we have to look at ourselves. And there’s probably some things that we have to be able to teach better, to clean some things up for them, to make some things easier for them.
“There were times in the second half of the year where the field position got out of hand. Now what we’ve got to be able to do is eliminate the touchdowns and make them have to kick field goals.”

– Cornerback D.J. Hayden said he is recovering well from the groin surgery that ended his rookie season. He now is working toward getting stronger and making the most of a whole offseason, which he didn’t have last season.
The Raiders are counting upon Hayden, their 2013 first-round draft pick, to develop into a top-tier player and linchpin of their defense. Hayden had an up-and-down rookie season before he suffered a groin injury.
Hayden is focused on finding ways to help the Raiders get back to their winning ways and not about validating the Raiders taking him with the 12th pick.
“Something to prove? Man, we just got to win,” Hayden said. “That’s all we got to do. That’s the way to prove to Raiders fans, make them happy, get this organization back to where it was. We just got to win.”

– The Raiders signed the following six players from their practice squad to what is known as futures contracts: OL Jack Cornell, WR Jared Green, TE Brian Leonhardt, defensive end Chris McCoy, linebacker Eric Harper and cornerback Johnny Adams.

Mark my words now: Manziel is going to come in for some team as a prima donna hotshot, he won’t win over the clubhouse, he’ll be a media distraction and he will implode on the field. That’s just my take – remember, you heard it here first. If I am wrong, I’ll be the first to admit it.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Jay Cutler & Darrelle Revis are probably “Macys” though, like Greg Hardy & Brian Orakpo … Reggie is probably leaning toward a player like Josh Freeman to compete with Pryor & McGloin. may the best clown win!

  • william banks

Wrong, you build from the inside to the outside.Offensive Line then Defensive Line then your QB.

  • rifflicks

Ravens line in 2012 rated 17….middle of the pack

  • FJTBONE

I see no problem with bringing in Josh Freeman … let him compete

  • SnBG

Not always, Some have a very good O lines that peek in the playoffs and SB. Most are rated pretty high in pass protection. You do need a good to great O line for sure.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

ALL COMPONENTS ARE IMPORTANT. YOU CANT REALLY HAVE ANY ASPECT TERRIBLE. BUT QB IS MOST IMPORTANT. THEN YOU TOOL THE OL

  • GotNext

Facts are facts. Anyone who thinks we’re going anywhere with an UDFA QB is delusional. There’s a reason guys get picked in the 1st round… they’re better!

  • william banks

Then you go and get you a good QB once your Offensive Line is very good.

  • 0tt0

dude…that was 40 years ago…in case you havent noticed the game has changed a little bit……we are moving into the no contact league and the teams that win are going to have top notch QB’s….lets get ahead of the curve instead of 40 years behind the curve

  • 0tt0

we should build the OL in free agency…its alot easier to pick up OL than QB

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    AND LATTER ROUNDS AND UDFA

  • hwnrdr

LOL, sorry…forgot Revis went there and that you meant that kind of island…

    17th, 23rd in pass protection.
And Oher one of the most penalized tackles in all of football.
This year, they were horse crap, with most of the same players.

  • william banks

Please,Cutler is waaaaaaay overrated he is an interception machine. He hasn’t won anything

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I honestly worry about his diabetes. People say he ain’t tough, but you try even functioning in life, better yet playing in the NFL as a full blown diabetic.
One of these days it will catch up to him.

  • rifflicks
  • william banks

I have a better idea, bring in more Offensive Linemen and let them compete.

  • GotNext

Oh, and the next guy who posts the “success rates” for 1st round picks being 30% or whatever, please follow that up with the success rates for guys picked in the next 6 rounds. Here’s a hint… they’re much lower.

  • 504 Raider

    MEDIA ALERT!!!!

All you Anti Manziel clowns need to tune in to First Take right now. If not it will repeat again 11am central.

  • SilverNBlackPA

There’s nothing about Manziel that I’ve seen that says “prima donna.” His teammates seem to love him.

  • SilverNBlackPA

100% chance Freeman is a Raider next year. Whether as a starter or backup, I don’t know, it depends on how stupid Reggie really is

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

    Attn: JFB

“In Hawaii before the Pro Bowl, Cutler became a victim to a prank organized by fellow Pro Bowlers, Peyton Manning, Nick Mangold, and Kris Dielman. He was tossed into a pool, and even though Manning remembered to swipe away his cell phone, Cutler’s blood sugar monitor was ruined. A replacement one was found at a drugstore, and Cutler played without incident” – WIKI

  • rifflicks

    Really???
Let’s see how NFL veterans react to some pip squeak loudmouth throwing a tantrum and jawing at them on the sideline in a game

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

It is. Pryor has both mental and passing limitations.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

And rally around him. Pleads to the defense in the sidelines to start the 2nd half, 2nd half D plays way better.
And nobody seemed to go up and side with Mike Evans. That’s the prima donna douche.

  • plunkhead

He does not look “well” His facial structure use to be putzhead, kinda fat. You may have something htere

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I am sure NFL teammates are going to side with the QB who is trying to get his WR to pull his head out of his azz who just had two 15 yard penalties and cost the team points.

  • william banks

It’s not Manziel but you just don’t know.I see David Carr when I see Manziel

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    STUPID COMMENT

  • rifflicks

    yeah….because it’s Johnny Football

  • 504 Raider

You guys missed it about Manziel. Watch again 11am central. Basically they were saying that he will be a star in NFL. Skip Bayless says draft him #1 overall and that he should be taken ahead of Bridgewater. Steven A says Clowney #1 overall to pair with JJ Watt. Steven A also slams the scout who said he was like Favre on Sunday but drinks and chase women during the week.

  • rifflicks

    meh

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

HES TEAM LEADER, HEART AND SOUL. LIKE ANY STRONG QB IN THE NFL. THAT’S HIS ROLE TO INSPIRE AND CHASTISE

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

    No, because it’s football.
Evans needed to be scolded, and that is what leaders do.

  • J Hill

HILARIOUS to me that some of you consider Macys to be high end.

  • 504 Raider

You’re going to be the reincarnation of the Philly Fans who Booo’ed McNabb on draft day.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Reggie thinks it is. Thats all that matters

  • rifflicks

real leaders do it in private.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

WOW YOU CAN BE REAL STUPID.

  • J Hill

I saw the 1st take report on Manziel.

If you ignore the reports of alcohol related issues he has, why not ignore Freeman’s?

Probably should pass on both if the concern is partying.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

IF HES GENUINELY AN ALCOHOLIC THEN PASS

  • rudegruden

Well if Skip thinks he should go #1 then hell you know he’s a star

  • RaiderLen

Have you seen what they want for a T shirt? lol

    Crazy.

  • dplunk

504.you may not know that Skip is a “texas” guy..my biggest concern with Manziel is his size, But of course I know its not allways about the size of the “dog in the fight”…..

  • hwnrdr

Did Cutler just resign with Da Bears?

  • hwnrdr

Ok, Schefter just reported it…so sorry guys, no Cutler!
