Allen interested in Raiders re-signing some of team’s prospective free agents

By Steve Corkran
Monday, December 30th, 2013 at 3:51 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have 17 unrestricted free agents. Coach Dennis Allen on Monday in his year-end news conference that re-signing some of those players figures to be critical in the Raiders stability for next season and beyond.
Allen mentioned defensive end Lamarr Houston, offensive tackle Jared Veldheer and safety Charles Woodson as free agents he is interested in the Raiders bringing back.
Here’s a complete list of the unrestricted free agents:
Offense — wide receiver Jacoby Ford, Veldheer, running back Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings, offensive linemen Khalif Barnes, Tony Pashos and Andre Gurode and tight end Jeron Mastrud.
Defense — defensive ends Houston and Jason Hunter, defensive tackles Vance Walker, Pat Sims and Daniel Muir, safeties Woodson and Usama Young, and cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins.
Houston said after Sunday’s game that it’s “very possible” that he had played his final game with the Raiders and that he wasn’t sure if the Raiders wanted him back.
Here’s his words verbatim.
“I believe that Dennis Allen and the Raiders might be looking to move on and have me go to another team or move on and find something more what they want for their system and their scheme,” Houston said. “Who knows? It’s a rough business and nothing’s guaranteed and everything changes from day to day.”
Later that day, Houston took to Twitter to change his tune.
“I would love to b back in Oakland if they will take me. Best fans in the league … u listen to the media, u a fool.”
Maybe the media can jog Houston’s memory by playing back a tape from the interview in question. The fools in the media would be glad to play back the tape recording, and they were prepared to do so Monday, though Houston didn’t come into the locker room during media access.
Allen addressed the issue Monday.
“I did see that quote, and that’s not the case,” Allen said in reference to Houston saying Allen might not want Houston back. “Obviously I sat down with Lamarr today and had a nice discussion with him. We’d love to have him back. We think he fits our system and what we’re trying to do and we think he’s a guy that we can build with.”

– Allen fired four assistant coaches on the day after the regular-season finale last season. He kept his staff intact this season, and it sounds as if that’s the approach he’s taking for the long-term.
“I don’t anticipate a lot of changes,” Allen said. “We’ll see what happens over the next few days and, obviously, there are a lot of discussions that have to be made. So, it’s probably not the right time to be able to make any type of comments on that, but I’m not looking to make a lot of changes.”

– Allen on Monday met with almost every player on his roster before the players departed the facility for the final time this season. During the team and individual meetings, Allen delivered a straightforward message.
“I said that I don’t plan on going anywhere, I plan on being here,” Allen said. “I talked about, we got 113 days between now and the start of the offseason program and we need to make sure that we have a good plan for what we’re gonna do over these next 113 days.
“I talked to all of them from a free agency standpoint about making sure we keep open lines of communication going. If they have any questions or concerns, they need to make sure that they contact me, and I can give them the right answers. And I told them to make sure they do things the right way off the field. The time to have your name in the paper is during the season, not during the offseason. So, make sure that you do the right things and you stay out of trouble.”

– The Raiders came within six points of setting a franchise record for most points allowed in a season. In particular, the defense struggled down the stretch.
Allen said the Raiders need to improve on third-down efficiency and red-zone defense, for sure.
“We have to do a better job with execution,” Allen said. “Obviously, guys are trying to do things the right way, so we have to look at ourselves. And there’s probably some things that we have to be able to teach better, to clean some things up for them, to make some things easier for them.
“There were times in the second half of the year where the field position got out of hand. Now what we’ve got to be able to do is eliminate the touchdowns and make them have to kick field goals.”

– Cornerback D.J. Hayden said he is recovering well from the groin surgery that ended his rookie season. He now is working toward getting stronger and making the most of a whole offseason, which he didn’t have last season.
The Raiders are counting upon Hayden, their 2013 first-round draft pick, to develop into a top-tier player and linchpin of their defense. Hayden had an up-and-down rookie season before he suffered a groin injury.
Hayden is focused on finding ways to help the Raiders get back to their winning ways and not about validating the Raiders taking him with the 12th pick.
“Something to prove? Man, we just got to win,” Hayden said. “That’s all we got to do. That’s the way to prove to Raiders fans, make them happy, get this organization back to where it was. We just got to win.”

– The Raiders signed the following six players from their practice squad to what is known as futures contracts: OL Jack Cornell, WR Jared Green, TE Brian Leonhardt, defensive end Chris McCoy, linebacker Eric Harper and cornerback Johnny Adams.

Hell I know he’s biased towards Manziel but he brings out great points and insight about the kid. I also know the pro scouts we have on this blog will rebuke everything that was said from Skip and Steven A.

  • J Hill

Well there that goes out the window.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

I don’t think Manziel is a partyboy clown like Matt Leinart. he’s from the football state (Texas). not a socal douche. probably likes to have a good time, but is a gamer on Sundays. I don’t think he’d be a problem here as much as Reggie & Dennis stress good off-the-field behavior and punishment when you don’t conduct yourself the proper way. Plus Kaufman & Winston are outstanding men. Wish they were here to mentor JaMarcus. Maybe then he wouldn’t have had to have a life coach (Lucas) or babysitter (Eddie Anderson)

  • william banks

Good Cutler is signed through 2020.Wow I don’t know what they see in Cutler he’s not all that.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

that Bears GM (Emery) is on top of things. always the first guy to get his FA’s re-signed and his draft picks inked. Reggie should take notes

  • 504 Raider

No way near a comparison to David Carr. Or Derek. No way. Unless you are a board member at Fresno State and think the world of the Carr’s.

  • J Hill

He resigned Reece before Emery resigned Cutler.

Emory is taking notes from Reggie.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Jennings & Veldheer re-signed yet? How about Woodson, Porter, Jenkins, Sims, Walker, Burnett?

  • EMRaiders

Well, we can all scratch cutler off our list.

So now the serious talk about drafting a qb can begin.

  • Chino

Why do we want walker back again?

  • Chino

    Can he return kicks?

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    JENNINGS-JOHNSON

  • J Hill

Veldheer is pretty much the only guy worth resigning NOW on that list.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

MCFADDEN FA, JENNINGS FA. MURRAY WAS A TERRIBLE PICK. ONLY STEWART AND TAIWAN LEFT ON ROSTER

  • rifflicks

yep, Cutler was the only QB that’s going to be available as a FA

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    HES STILL YOUNG, GOOD DEPTH

  • rifflicks

    What’s wrong with Walker?

  • J Hill

    He’s not Arthur Jones.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

40 tackles & 3 sacks. solid vs run. decent pressuring QB’s. should be cheap enough. depth

  • 504 Raider

    Game, Set and Match!!!!

I knew it would be a matter of time before you spit out something that would bury you. That was one of Theee dumbest comments ever on this blog. We are talking about NFL tackle football. During the game. There is no time to scold someone in private.

Looks like you gonna have to change your screen name and post as someone else.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

another guy Reggie passed on. thanks Wiggle!

  • Chino

No reason we can’t resign Jennings. Allen has already expressed interest. I do like Johnson’s home run ability, but I feel like Reece has been deserving of those touches

  • J Hill

    In 2010?

  • AutumnThunderstorm

That was worth a serious long term contract

  • Chino

I like the depth part. Definitely need a better rusher

  • william banks

So does Geno Smith but Geno has a better team around him and The Jets are sticking with their young QB.We should do the same Pryor has great potential especially if he has a dominate Offensive Line in front of him.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

REECE IS A DISTRACTION. B/C HE EXISTS THERE, WE FEEL WE HAVE TO GET HIM HEAVILY INVOLVED WHICH TAKES AWAY FROM FOCUSING ON TAILBACK WRS TES. TRADE REECE. HES NOT INTEGRAL.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Manziel more like Ken “the Snake” Stabler.

  • rifflicks

    that “you” are aware of

  • TrevJo

It is a bad thing when the talent at the top is as good as this year.

  • rifflicks

    in what way?

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

the only guy I think will be difficult to re-sign will be Lamarr Houston. not because he doesn’t want to be here or he doesn’t fit the defense, but due to the fact he wants to be paid like a top tier DE – and he’s not one!

  • dplunk

More like Doug Flutie to me

  • Chino

He’s proven he could run the ball. He’s a matchup nightmare when we’ve used him right and he’s unselfish. He never complains about the lack of touches. As long as he’s fine with it and the coaches don’t feel pressure by the media asking him about the lack of touches he gets, then the situation is fine. Id understand if he was buried in the depth chart behind our RBs or TEs but he’s a fb and a damn good one.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Cutler being resigned by Chicago, simply means Houston, St. Louis, Jacksonville, Cleveland more inclined to draft a QB than draft Clowney, Barr, or Matthews.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

THEN LET JENNINGS GO AND MAKE REECE (ON CONTRACT) THE FULLTIME TAILBACK. OR MAKE THE RB CHART JENNINGS-REECE. 1A, 1B

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    Agreed

  • Chino

Question is, are the raiders confident they can lure somebody in with equal or better value? We’re no exactly a dream destination. We can’t afford to lose any of our current “talent”. He’s got all the leverage.

  • dplunk

Not so sure that STL was going to draft a QB anyway

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

THEY’LL DEFINITELY BE EYEING WATKINS. RAMS NEED WR BADLY. WHY THEY WANT TO TRADE DOWN 3 OR SO SPOTS. ALL THE QB NEEDY TEAMS WILL TAKE QB, LEAVING THEM WITH WATKINS

  • Chino

Olawale does look like a good option at fb. Reece would just have to lose some of that gut

  • rifflicks

Houston and his agent will field offers from the market and that alone, will determine his real value…..when he comes down to Earth, he will have to decide to take the Raiders offer or take the same amount from somewhere else

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    HB: JENNINGS-REECE
    FB: OLAWALE
GET RID OF THE REST, INCLUDING MURRAY (CAMP CUT)

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

if the money is the same, he’s obviously going to leave and join a “winner” (playoff team)

  • rifflicks

depends on who extends the offer….and the familiarity with the Raider system and not having to move his family to another city are worth a lot too

  • W.J

I’m inclined to agree. A potty mouth Tewbow who can throw. He has the raw makings of a Brees, but I just don’t see him lasting.

  • IAmAlwaysWrong

Rams are not going QB. I already reported that. those other 3 teams CERTAINLY will consider it. I think a few QB’s will slip to Bucs and/or Vikings as well, leaving the possibility of 4 QB’s drafted in the Top 10

  • dplunk

    lol..You already Reported that.

  • rifflicks

    write it down then

  • HELLSBELLS

Wish they would resign him but tell him he is going To be a DT.
