Moore honored as top rookie

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at 12:33 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Outside linebacker Sio Moore was selected to the All-Rookie team by the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie, it was announced Tuesday.
Moore showed promise from the outset for the Raiders this season, and he made a strong case for being recognized as the most productive rookie of the Raiders draft class.
He notched 55 tackles, recorded 4 1/2 sacks and forced one fumble in 15 games. He projects as a core player for the Raiders defense in the coming years.
Moore joined fellow linebackers Kiko Alonso and Alec Ogletree on the PFWA All-Rookie team. The Raiders selected Moore in the third round out of Connecticut.

The constant @$$ whoopings put on this team, the poor game plans and calls, the overall inability to stop anything any where on the field and inability to covert 3rd downs and Redzone.

  • rudegruden

But they play “the right way”

  • BigBenRexor

The defense was upgraded at every position except DE, which is somehow not Reggie’s fault for some baffling reason, yet became worse.

Lamarr was drafted for his pass rushing skills? Damn here I was thinking we took him to play 3 Tech with emphasis on run stopping and occupying the A gap,Silly me.

Per Paul G: Olson, Sparano, Flip, Skipper, Hutson, Gilmore, Tarver, Williams, Sanders and April have all re-upped. He said three will not be returning. So, three of the following will not be back: Saunders, Griffith, Holz, Lopez, Lynn, Sanders, Smith, Burns, Miller, and Grieco.

The Bass cut is somewhat confusing…since we needed pass rushers and he actually got playing time for the Bears?

  • AutumnThunderstorm

    New post- Tarver retained.

  • Raider Duck

And had all of one sack.

  • DutchRaid

Also, Simms was always hurt on the Bengels…

Those were good things. If you’re not in playoff contention after having $70 mil in cap space and a host of draft picks, then chances are you won’t ever get there. Going from way over the cap to way under the cap should yield big improvement.

Note there is not one play maker in the bunch. No close to pro bowl talent here. Out of all of them only a few can be considered average for starters. Not one I would consider as above average even.

I am not trying to blame this all on Reggie (cap issues lack of draft played a big role) but those of you that think we had a playoff team with better coaching are delusional. This has to be worst defensive roster in NFL right now. Losing Branch and Young with this kind of depth behind is very difficult to recover from.

  • Papertiger

They’re essentially coaching interns, right? It’s like an apprenticeship.

  • 1960AutumnWind

thanks Duck! Wish our guys were covering Raiders instead of 49ners…

What if he made a lot of good decisions with the exception of finding the right coach? Why not let RM have a 2nd chance of replacing that said coach. Everyone must learn from their mistakes right?

  • Raider Duck

Pretty much, except you’re getting paid (very little, but still).

  • R8erEduc8er

Gotta wait and see how it all plays out. Gotta see the talent brought in. The talent brought in has to match the record.

  • 24

Let’s say we fill the team with talent but we don’t get another QB and go into the season with McGloin…think we have a chance?

  • Twinkle

Pat Sims started 16 for the first time. 8 was the most back in 2010 previously. He was gassed by the third sure but his endurance will have increased and he knows what the starting grind requires now.One thing to watch a whole different thing to do .This offseason will give him the opportunity to expand his lungs because he’s not that heavy at 310.He has the chance to blow it up this season if he wants to because now he knows he can do it.

  • funnyfalcon

It just surprises me that failures get a do-over.

  • W.J

But with the exception of Houston, aren’ these all RM’s guys?

  • R8drTahoe in SF

It was the roster that many NFL “experts” said was the least talented roster in the NFL across the boars. Defensively and Offensively the worst. That was the verdict last off-season. Then they came out and surprised people during the first half of the season, but became what they thought they were in the second. =$.02

Jenkins never lived up to his pick status in Dallas, Porter was a decent CB coming off injury, Woodson was a 36 year old CB moved to FS. I wouldn’t call that “pretty good” on paper. On paper I’d call it a big question mark.

LC Jenkins [Agreed but played well, much better than last years CBs]
SS Ross [Dead on, a solid back up]
FS Woodson [True but, proved to be a leader and added much needed depth]
RC – Porter [no one signed him to a long term deal due to injury concerns. stayed healthy and proved to be a solid CB in the league]
OLB – Burnett (play well but the position can be upgraded pretty easily)
MLB Roach [proved to be a quality/solid LB]
OLB [dead on with "for a Rookie", has to progress ]
DE – Houston [Dead wrong on this one, Houston did not have overwhelming sack numbers, but had a great year in terms of run defense and getting pressure on the QB. Is better suited on the left side or in the middle on passing downs]
DT Walker [Too inconsistent, better off as a rotational player - need to upgrade]
DT Sims [Stayed health for the most part and showed he can be a strong peace in the future]
DE – Hunter [too inconsistent, need to upgrade here should be RM's top priority]

True there is no one with overwhelming talent, but there are some solid pieces. The idea is to keep the player that contribute and then add talent/upgrades around them. The D-line as a whole played very good at the start of the season when we got some wins, but injures affecting the rotation and wore down the unit. I think the D-line should be the Top priority in the draft and free agency as well as finding a franchise QB. If Houston does come back (which I hope he does) there will still be several other DL/DE that come in this offseason.

There are really not 2nd half adjustments, not in the NFL anyways. Adjustments are made every series, if they are waiting for the 2nd half then they are probably a 4 series behind.
