Tarver back as defensive coordinator

Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver is returning to the Raiders, the club confirmed Tuesday.

Tarver’s two-year contract was set to expire Tuesday but in news that was first reported by ESPN and the NFL Network, he signed again with the Raiders. The length of the contract was not released.

The Raiders confirmed they had retained assistant head coach and line coach Tony Sparano with a two-year deal on Saturday. According to the Raiders flagship station 95.7 The Game, special teams coach Bobby April will also return.

At his season-ending press conference, coach Dennis Allen said he didn’t expect a lot of changes on staff, although there was speculation the Raiders could lose some assistants because owner Mark Davis was reportedly unwilling to extend deals past a single season.

– Strong side linebacker Sio Moore was named to the NFL’s All-Rookie team as selected by the Pro Football Writers of America.

As depth, ok, but as starters, no.

  • rifflicks

no…he’s saying is…. that you especially will need at least 11 brain cells to understand the team concept of the NFL…and if you can get them to work together effectively, and then add a few more to help when needed…your mom won’t have to spoon feed you anymore

  • Davy Jones

    Yeah, no.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Bring him in and let him compete not willing to take CDE’s word for it.

  • Howard Benner

Longevity runs in my family. I just have to watch those “three hour tours. . .”

  • 1960AutumnWind

Let them compete. Freeman hung 42 on us last year for instance.

  • jesusraiderjim

RIP Professor!! Which still leaves the age old question, Ginger or MaryAnn

  • Davy Jones

I think the Raiders should bring in (draft) a QB with a better shot at beating McGloin. McGloin wins? Fine, trade that other guy.

  • 1960AutumnWind

All of this is true but you should not build your defense on that. He can be rotational and depth but you do not want him playing lots of snaps until he proves he can truly handle it.

  • Davy Jones

Maryann. She’d watch football with you on the Professor’s coconut television.

  • 1960AutumnWind

And who might that be? Borttles et al. They may not even be there wnen Raiders pick plus now you use a high pick on QB instead of Defense or other key positions.

  • rifflicks

MaryAnn….she probably makes great nachos and wouldn’t give you “the look” if you asked her to get you another Beer.

  • Davy Jones

I think that one of the three will likely be there. Someone from the first four teams will think like everyone in here seems to think and draft a WR or an OL for their mediocre-to-sh*tty QB.

  • RaiderCDE

RM can fix the defense if he spends some of that $5! Quality players are out there and we need 3-4 of them in our front 7 including some bigger beef at LB.

We could use a hitter in the secondary too. Whens the last time we knocked somebody out the game?!

  • RaiderCDE

Who *didn’t* look All Pro against this defense?

  • http://AdvoCare.com/ Till death do us part

Both , get the city and the country

  • Davy Jones

And if they’re all gone? Fine, draft Watkins or Clowney, or trade back- and then try again in the 2nd. But all these 4th rd and 5th rd QBs that people want to draft? SMH.

  • jesusraiderjim

Seattles DB’s are the “standard” we should be looking at. Those dudes lay the wood on the opposition.

  • Chino

Sims works for the money. Once he gets it, see ya later work ethic

  • seymour bush

What the Raiders realized this year was they need to get bigger on both lines of scrimmage.

  • RaiderCDE

RM: ‘Everything is going to plan. We’re only 2 years from being 2 years away from a playoff team.’

  • jesusraiderjim

If McCaron or Murray from Georgia are available I would take either one of those guys.

  • RaiderLen

You could be right. I don’t know that for sure.

  • RaiderCDE

    Amen.

  • TrevJo

the 4th was dumped on Wilson
    McG was an UDFA

  • 1960AutumnWind

If Clowney is there take him forget the QBs and get one almost as good or better later such as Murray.

  • Howard Benner

Mary Ann. . but in real life Ginger is a bit more stable. . .

  • http://AdvoCare.com/ Till death do us part

I’d be ok with that, but I sure don’t want to give any jack to do it. Anyone no what the bare bone minimum contract is

  • Howard Benner

I was merely stipulating that he needs much more development. . .my point exactly. . .all the current Raider DT’s are rotational. . .nothing special against the pass. . .

  • jesusraiderjim

That would be when McTripsalot tripped on the grass and was out for a few games

  • Davy Jones

I’d be fine, pretty psyched in fact, if they drafted Clowney. My real issue is the reluctance to draft QBs high around here. Raider fans need to see that every other team in the NFL addresses the position that way. Brady is a once a generation fairy tale. UDFAs and 4th rd QBs MIGHT get the job done . . . and you might be able to win Daytona driving with your feet. It’s just not as goddamn likely. Fact.

  • Chino

McKenzie: “We’re trying to accumulate as many really good players as possible. The philosophy is not to dump every dollar and cent into one or possibly two players, no. That’s not my philosophy. We’re not at that point with our team that we’re able to do that, because we have more than one or two needs

    Exactly. We’re not there yet.

  • RaiderCDE

Seahags and fruity-whiners are examples of teams at the top of the league who *don’t* have 1st round QBs. They built their team around physicality, defense, running game and depth and plugged in decent QB’s and they are playing for the SB.

Either of their QB would not succeed on our team as it currently stands. Lets build the bully first and worry about the QB situation down the road. Draft one? Sure. But not with the #5 unless its an Andrew Luck and he’s not there this year. Sign one? Sure. But no more squandered draft picks or millions down the toilet. Focus on building the core in 2014. If this team is not significantly better on the Oline, Dline and defense overall next year, RM has failed.

  • Davy Jones

Which means that he won’t go very high for Greg Hardy. He should, though.

  • http://AdvoCare.com/ Till death do us part

What do you mean , opie? His face, cuz it sure ain’t the way he played

  • Davy Jones

Quick, when’s the last time a non first round QB won the SB?

  • Chino

But, you still want to get better. If we can, whatever that number is – six, seven, eight – there are still going to be some changes. Continuity helps, but great players and really good players would help more and add to that continuity.”
Reg is not as clueless as y’all think

  • 1960AutumnWind

KInd of like Lativis Murray is the next Adrian Peterson…. That is why we have to bring vets or draft pick in for competition. I do think he earned a chance to compete though.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

    2004 Season. Tom Brady.

  • Davy Jones

Wrong, actually. Well, sort of wrong.

  • RaiderCDE

Quick. How many 1st round QB’s have never won the SB? Or a playoff game?

Forest through the trees my friend. Forest through the trees..

  • Chino

If he really likes a player, better believe he’ll go after him

  • Orthodoxdj

RM “Next year we will be at the end of phase 3 of phase 1.”

  • TrevJo

Not really a fair stat when you consider that 25/32 teams had 1st round QBs starting when this year began. When almost every team is starting one, then of course almost every game is won by one.
Not to mention a 6th round QB has been to the AFC title game 8 times in the last 13 years and a 2nd round QB was a play away from winning the Super Bowl last year.

  • 1960AutumnWind

    Cool…

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

I stand corrected. 2009 Season. Drew Brees.

  • Davy Jones

More 1st round QBs have won playoff games and SBs than 2nd rounders, By a lot. More 2nd rounders have won playoff games and SBs than 3rd rounders. By a lot. Your foresty point is moot.

  • Sir Raider Duck, OMS

He didn’t say that, or anything like it. He specifically set the playoffs as a goal.

  • BigBenRexor

He’s been saying that since he got here.
