Raiders’ Allen at combine

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 20th, 2014 at 2:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen talked with reporters at the NFL scouting combine Thursday and also with Sirius XM radio.

Here are some highlights of what he had to say:

– His thoughts heading into the combine and free agency with cap space available . . .

“I don’t think that there’s any question that we’ve got a better feel for the football team going into year No. 3. The other thing that we have a good feel about is there’s some things, some resources that available to us that we can really try to do some things to improve the football team. That doesn’t mean you go out and spend irresponsibly, because then you put yourself in a bad position again. The plan is, and always will be, that you draft young players, raise ‘em up through your program, re-sign them when they come up for their contract again, and augment your team through free agency.’’

–Thoughts on Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel . . .

“I think he’s a very talented player. I think he’s a multi-dimensional player. I think he’s able to throw the ball. I think he’s able eto throw the ball from the pocket, but also able to create things with his feet. As we get more into the process, I think he’ll be a fun guy to really evaluate.’’

– The importance of intangibles in assessing a quarterback . . .

“It’s important that they they have the right mindset, the right character, the right values to be able to handle it. I think when you look at the quarterback position, that’s what you look at. It’s not as much about what they do physically on the field, it’s about what they do mentally and their approach to the game.’’

– Re-signing key free agents, including left tackle Jared Veldheer and right end Lamarr Houston . . .

“They’re obviously a big priority. They are guys that we want to sign back and we’re in communication with their agents in trying to get something worked out. Obviously the process of negotiations never goes as fast as either fast wants it to go, but I feel very confident that those players want to be here. We obviously want them to be here. So I feel confident we’ll be able to get something done.’’

– Whether the Raiders quarterback in 2014 is currently on the roster . . .

“I don’t know the answer to that yet. It’s obviously a positon we’re going to look at to try to improve. The quarterback is the b ackbone of your team so we have to make sure that when we go out there this year we put ourselves sin the best position to have success.’’

– Whether the Raiders are interested in bringing back free agent running back Darren McFadden . . .

“When you look at it, Darren McFadden is an extremely good player and a high talent, but unfortunately he’s had the injury history. What we have to do from a business standpoint is you’ve got to look at the dollar figure compared to the availability and what you’re able to get out of it. I think that’s something that we’re going to look at. We’re going to be in communication with Darren’s agent and see where he’s at.’’

– The possibility of bringing back free safety Charles Woodson . . .

“I definitely think he’s got something left in the tank. Obvoiusly, when you get to that age, you never know when the tank is going to empty out. He’s a guy we would like to hopefully bring back. There’s a business side to anything you do, but from a leadership perspective and aplaying perspective, I thought he brought a lot to the table.’’

– The importance of bring in someone to rush the passer . . .

“This league is about affecting the quarterback. That’s something that we’ve got to got to do and have to do better . . We’ve got to do some things to get some people that can get after the quarterback and rush the quarterback as well as continue to work to improve the back end of the defense We’re playing Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers and Alex Smith, that’s what we’re going to be looking to do offensively as we go through this offseason.

Aaron Rodgers backup had a dam good run

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Hoyer was a pleasant surprise for them.

  • Davy Jones

Don’t take this the wrong way, Raider fans, but responses below are why I think the Raiders should draft a QB. Even though I like Watkins. Retread QBs suck.

  • marks hair

Nope.. time to draft our quarterback

  • 24

    lol…nice one.

    PFT:

The Browns’ unpredictable head-coaching search nearly finished with what would have been the most unpredictable outcome of any head-coaching search since Jon Gruden was traded from the Raiders to the Buccaneers a dozen years ago.

Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.

A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.

    ====================================================

How many draft picks do the Niners need??

  • Dakota

Actually, I think Lombardi blamed Norv and the prior HC for sinking Hoyer on the depth chart…..so I don’t think Norv is too impressed with the kid.

  • 24

Foles would have been one of those guys to trade for but then Chip had to come along and show all of his skills before we could sneak a trade…darn you Chip

  • marks hair

that’s nonsense. they made a rule saying you cant trade coaches after gruden.

  • Dakota

I call BS….I thought teams could no longer trade HCs thanks to Al and Gruden.

  • AutumnThunderstorm

and a serious knee injury, 6th or 7th rounder now

  • 24

I do recall that and there’s no way the organization would let Harbaugh go…this is all BS

  • Dakota

Hey, I’d take a chance on him at that point.

  • 24

I’ll never believe in anything Lombardi has to say…

  • R8erEduc8er

Still going in the 3rd when he performs well at his pro day.

  • FourMoreYears

I suggested a second rounder for him. New England gets value for their pick and we get a quarterback with just as much potential as any we could draft at #5 overall, who also got to learn from Brady for a couple of years.

They do like Mallett in New England but his contract is up next year, so this is really their last chance to get anything for him.

  • 24

And the one who disappear thereafter haha

  • Dakota

Cap space, lottery pick….it is always better to be bad in the NBA than be a mid-level struggling team. the Kobe injury was a blessing.

  • 24

That’s the part about basketball I have never grasped or understood…their system is so different from any other sport. I wish is more like the NFL in that the worst team gets the first pick and so on…it’s too complicated or I just don’t care enough to understand it…either way.

  • kuhlest

Ryan Mallett could prolly be had for a mid round pick

  • FourMoreYears

I don’t know about that. You can bet Tyler Wilson is going to be on people’s minds when they think about Murray.

  • DutchRaid

I saw a Bleacher article that said we should trade for Jake Locher (sic)…cannot see that happening.

  • 24

So you’re confident that Mallett beats out McGloin? I don’t make the trade unless I think the guy can beat the current guy and if Mallett doesn’t play well, that’s another QB failure under RM that people will blame him for.

  • The Beeeeech Dawg

Yo, which shorty are you bros going to spank it to in the upcoming UFC fight – Rousey or McMann?

Rousey is the kind of hizzy who’ll just ride the Lawg for an hour and let you mess around on your cell

McMann has some big gunz but seems like she might get sensitive after giant mayonnaise explosion and want to cuddle

Goes without saying that both ho’s need giant booblie jobs, so please don’t factor that into your decision

    WIZZLE FRESH

  • 24

The guy isn’t bad but he’s so injury prone that I wouldn’t do it…

  • 24

    Kolb is a lost cause.

  • 24

No…Tyler Wilson is on nobody’s mind, except maybe the cashier handing him the items to bag…

  • DutchRaid

Yeah and Cutler sent DeAngelo Williams to the HOF…4 INTs in one game.

  • 24

Isn’t that the running back from Carolina or is there another with that name?

  • AutumnThunderstorm

Give a higher % in guaranteed dollars and then sign

Hardy for 10 (million per year, 5years)
    Vehldeer 7 (5)
    Houston 6.5 (5)
    Mack 8 (5)
    Verner 7.5 (4)
    Byrd 7 (4)
    Woodson 4 (1)
    Jennings 3.5 (3)

that’s 53.5 million, leaving us another 10 million in cap space for Draft picks, role players and rollover to next year.

  • RaiderDirt

If it’s on the net it’s a fact… C’mon dude, it’s an estimate compared from the majority of Web writers.

    One Nation

  • DJ Johnny

    you mean Deangelo Hall.

  • 24

I gave all the great players 7 year contracts in Madden to lessen the blow and then I would restructure when they have about 4 years left…just saying, it worked in Madden haha

  • DJ Johnny

sounds like a good enough reason to me.

  • FourMoreYears

It’s a crapshoot either way, and I would hope that Reggie isn’t selecting players with an eye on what fans will think.

Having said that, I watched every game Mallett played at Arkansas in person, and I can tell you that he is an NFL caliber quarterback. He has an absolute rocket for an arm, it’s something you can’t really appreciate on TV, you have to see it in person. His problem, like Palmer, has always been turnovers at inopportune times. But he will get lots of yards and touchdowns too. Build a good defense and you don’t have to worry about the turnovers so much.

  • 24

It still pisses me off that Hall has had a better career everywhere else but the Raiders. That guy had to have been one of the worst Raiders in history.

  • HELLSBELLS

    New post

  • 24

    Mallett vs McCarron?

  • 24

    Thank you!

  • DutchRaid

Sorry, no disrespect intended. Raider on…I actually really liked the numbers and was hoping you didn’t pull them from the neither regions.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Can’t play man. Or couldn’t then.

  • RaiderDirt

    No problem

    One Nation

  • hysteric

    Obviously.

  • kuhlest

Well, he. And the other 3 are the only true freshman to ever be AP All Americans in NCAA history…. So it’s kind of true…

  • TrevJo

With our cap room we’re better off giving LESS in signing bonus, since the cap hit is spread out over the length of the contract, but maybe we can give more in first year salary.
