Atkinson III shows impressive speed at scouting combine

The Raiders can address a glaring need at kick returner by turning to a familiar face in George Atkinson III, who sparkled at the NFL scouting combine Sunday.
Atkinson III is the son of former Raiders standout defensive back George Atkinson. He auditioned in front of NFL owners, general managers, scouts and coaches in Indianapolis in hopes of being selected in the NFL draft in May.
He posted times of 4.39 and 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash Sunday, with Raiders owner Mark Davis and Atkinson’s father looking on from a suite in Indianapolis.
The Raiders, of course, crave fast players. Just as important, they are in need of a player who possesses Atkinson’s kick returning ability.
Atkinson III shined in that capacity during his collegiate career at Notre Dame. He averaged 24.3 yards and scored two touchdowns on kick returns during his three-year career for the Fighting Irish.
Atkinson III also averaged 6.2 yards rushing and scored 10 touchdowns in a complementary role.
Taiwan Jones led the Raiders with a 24-yard average on kick returns last season. However, he has a history of trouble hanging on to the ball and is far from a lock to retain that job next season.
Atkinson III bypassed his final year of college eligibility. His decision came on the heels of being suspended for Notre Dame’s final game, against Rutgers on Dec. 28, for what coach Brian Kelly termed “a violation of team rules.”
Atkinson III defended himself via Twitter by saying that he got suspended for texting during a team meal, something he did all season.
Atkinson III is a Granada High School graduate. He also was a regular visitor to Raiders practices during his formative years, along with his twin brother Josh.

My love for the Raiders, love talking football. Just wish there was someone worth doing it with.

I would spend ten times more time if someone were.

  • Papertiger

Ugh! CBS is bringing in Bart Scott to replace Dan Marino for their pregame coverage. Looks like they just can’t stand having a panel show without a loudmouth.

  • Guest123

I think Clowney falls to us at #5. In that scenario, we need to trade back one pick with ATL, and take whatever they give us (3rd or 4th round pick) and then take Watson.

  • TrevJo

I’m sure it will come up in the interviews (assuming Reggie interviews him). It will be just one of a zillion considerations on draft day.

Only top prospect that didn’t play his college ball on the east coast or in the South is Barr, and I wouldn’t move Barr up our board based on it.

  • Blackholepriest

Russell’s on a great team dude……..simple as that. Put him on this team and see what happens.

  • Mike_Trail

    Good Quote from Gil Brandt:

“I’d be comfortable with Clowney on my roster when he’s
    playing for his second contract..”

yeah if Watkins is gone, I was impressed with Bortles arm strength he can really push that ball. he runs slow but he does run the ball wen pressured , looks a lot like big ben. mack looks real good too…

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

None of that is any good w/out a killer competitive drive to perform and to “be there,” as they say, for your teammates.
What this kid is saying is “I perform when I get what I want.”

  • DKnight007

As of now…McK taking WATKINS or MACK would make me happy…..

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Hasn’t ever sounded to me as if you “love the Raiders.” Sounds like you love something else.

  • FourMoreYears

    Agree to disagree on Bortles.

  • Buckarama

It all comes down to a poor showing is just going to hurt them. They’ve everything to lose and nothing to gain by doing them. I don’t agree with it, I think it should be mandatory if you want in the draft you do all the combine. But there I go thinking again.

  • DKnight007

Mack should be in the convo also…

  • william banks

Look fellas,IMO it really doesn’t matter in the big picture who the QB is because if the TEAM is messed up then the QB wont win most of the time. That is our Raiders sad to say but,”IT’S TRUE.If a Car is broken down does it really matter who the Driver=QB is? No bcuz no matter who you put in that car to drive it,it’s not going anywhere.Fix the Car=Raiders first then get you can get your driver.Defense,Offensive Line,Special Teams all=The car is now ready to run, then go get your driver to drive it.

  • DKnight007

    I’m sure Mark was impressed…

  • Buckarama

I was trying to turn that around, get our mediocre QBs a couple of great receivers and see what happens.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Pity Mike Silver doesn’t have a blog.

  • Guest123

your analogy is flawed. QB is the drive train and the body wheels are the rest of the team. no matter who fancy the paintjob or how shiny the rims are, if it don’t got a motor, it won’t go.

  • Blackholepriest

Russell’s last 4-5 games of the year his own fans were questioning him. He benefits greatly from a superior surroundings including his coaching staff. He never WOWs me as a great talent he’s a game manager. Yes he makes a few plays here and there, but who couldn’t with a lead 90% of the time due to his defense.

  • DKnight007

OREG ST OLB/DE Crichton might not make it out of 1st round…..damn….he would be a good pick for Raiders in Round 2.

  • william banks

Then fix it.This isn’t the Flintstones era when you don’t need an motor.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

And you need a spark plug. That must be where Johnny comes into play.

Looking at the draft order, how is it that Atlanta picks ahead of Tampa and Tampa finished last in the same division last year?

How about you lead the way “owning up to your predictions”?

Please, your car is broken down and will not run,it doesn’t matter who you get to drive your broken down car. Its’ not going to run until you fix the problem or problems.

    He is 21 years old

  • Guest123

that’s right, and until we get a true FC QB, we got DA and Reggie pushing the car and thumbing for a ride.

  • spiff

he just don’t make the mistakes which is very rare with a young qb. manager is the right term. he will definitely need more playmakers to continue to have success.

  • DutchRaid

Paging Mistic to the blog…If you were white…Mistic would accuse you of being part of the Amerikkka.

  • Gdog

Trade down then. We NEED a QB. No need to hand wring over which one in this class…

  • Raider-In-PA

What is everybody’s take on Atkinson? What round would you take him and is it a strong need? I love the legacy connection, wish we couldve landed either one of Howie’s boys….

  • william banks

That’s funny but no,Offensive Line, Defense and Special Teams = then the car is ready to go.Then get your QB to drive it.Thats all.

  • DKnight007

The two OLB/DE’s I liked that looked good at Combine were Gayle and Crichton.

  • DKnight007

    I agree with this view.

  • BigBenRexor

I’ve never actually seen him play, but he fits two needs for us.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

    Mettenberg(3rd rnd.)sits behind McGloin ’till he’s ready.

  • disqus_yeZNegncsV

Legacies mean nothing unless they help us win.

  • BigBenRexor

Both of Howie’s kids would be helping us win. Legacies of good players usually turn out to be pretty good.

  • william banks

Please we don’t need a QB to drive this broken car which at the moment is our Raiders.Leave the QB out because our Raiders is a broken down car.Fix the car first then get your qb to drive it.

  • Purvisman/Eternal Optimist

Ever noticed how many one of a kind, unique, special, otherworldly, once in a generation players inhabit Priest’s world? Getting crowded in there.

  • https://twitter.com/MimiPeepeechimi Just Fire Baby

I thought Manziel should have thrown, but was bailed out when the other guys didn’t throw either, and some like Bridgewater didn’t even do all the drills either.
Manziel did all the workouts at least.

Terrelle Pryor had talent only Bo Jackson and Babe Ruth had.

  • Blackholepriest

It’s a team game folks. Gawd how hard is that to understand? TEAMS win. Not QBs not any single position you must build a TEAM, STOP LOOKING FOR THE END ALL TO BE ALL. get as many great players in as many positions as possible that’s how you win. There aren’t any QB in his draft that can turn this around so get the best players at whatever position they play.

It’s just that there are no QBs that grade out higher than the other positions……..it’s real simple

Clowney is the best player at Any position so you target him and go down your board from there. You always always always get great talent first. If you can’t you get the player who grades out highest next.

There was a lot of people in here hoping we would draft the Mathews LB kid from Oregon a few years ago.
    Glad we didn’t do that.
